I'd like the words to Ailein Duinn, or Dark Alan, preferably in a good English translation, but I'd be happy to have the Gaelic as well. Karen Matheson of Capercaillie sings it on the Rob Roy sound track.

By the way, the song title given in the database is "Ailenn Duinn", but since it's spelled correctly in the lyrics a search would locate it okay. The DT includes a little background information. The thread Alison points to contains a translation(but not a singable one), bibliographic (etc) info and a link to both the DT lyrics and Capercaillie site.

Is seo na faclan as fheàrr gun urrainn dhomh smaoinich de. Tha mi 'n
dòchas gum bi sibh sàsaichte leòtha. Slàinte!
(These are the best words that I can come up with. I hope that you will be satisfied with them. Cheers!)

Gura mise tha fo èislean            (How sorrowful I am
Moch sa' mhadainn is mi 'g èirigh    Early in the morning I am rising)

Sèist:
Ò hì, shiubhalainn leat...            (Ò hì, I would walk with thee...
Hì rì bhò, hò rù bhì
Hì rì bhò, hò rinn ò hò
Ailein Duinn, ò hì shiubhalainn leat   Dark Allan, I'd walk with thee)

Ma 's e 'n cluasag dhut a ghaineamh    (If thy pillow is the sand
Ma 's e leabaidh dhut an gheamainn      If thy bed is the seaweed)

Sèist:

Ma 's en t-iasg do choinlean geala (If the fish are thy candles bright
Ma 's na ròin do luchd-faire       If the seals are thy watchmen)

Sèist:

Dh'òlainn deoch ge boil le càch e (I would drink though all abhor it
Dè dh'fhuil do choim 's tu 'n       Of thy heart's blood after
Dèidh do bhathadh...                Thy drowning.)

Sèist:

I just found this thread after hearing a sample of this Gaelic song "A Tear in the Open," on DJ Tiesto's new CD, "Just Be."

This CD will be heard all over the world, and I've even heard that Tiesto has been using this track as an opening for his DJ sets!

Gaelic lives on!

Gordon

O\ hi\ shiu\bhlainn leat,
Hi\ ri bho\ ho\ ru bhi\,
Hi\ ri bho\ ho\ rionn o ho,

o hi on the first line and the last two lines of the chours intire are made up of vocables, ie. they have no meaning and are just there to sound good, and in this case to convey the feeling of the author as she sings. Gaelic songs are full of them.

I think that should be "Fhuair iad ann an siod iad, an dithis aca ri taobha a chéile" and that it means "They found them over there, the two of them side by side". You don't give any context or say where this line is from.

Are you learning Gàidhlig? There are some Scottish Gaelic forums on the internet where you may be able to get more informed response to your query.

Does anyone have or know how to get the sheet music to this? Badly in need of it and can't find it anywhere. Thanks, DEDE

DEDE
I've taken the MIDI file from the Mudcat, and brought it into my Finale Notepad Plus program, which gives a "sheet music" that I printed as a PDF. For a week, I will have it at my web-site
