Anyone see Miriam Erasmus at Tenterden a couple of years ago? Is she appearing at any other local clubs? I gather she was known by her maiden name in the 70s- and has a re released album out on CD. Any news?

She's due to do a tour of the UK fairly soon. Check her website for exact dates.

What's her website address? Google can't seem to find it, under "Miriam Erasmus" or "Miriam Backhouse". I knew her back in the early seventies, when she was married to Richard Backhouse and lived in Yorkshire.

I knew Miriam and Richard around 1970-72 when they lived in Halifax. I haven't seen her since 72. I believe she did rather well. I saw (I'm fairly certain) Sam Bracken at Dent in 2005 playing mandolin in a dance band. I don't think Miriam ever sang with Therapy - there was a girl called Fiona (from Farnborough) who did though.

My mistake Ancient, you are dead right, it was Fiona Simpson who sang with Therapy.

I thought that she went to South Africa for quite a long time, maybe she still lives there and visits the UK.

Miriam Backhouse started singing in British folk Clubs in the mid seventies and quickly gained a big reputation as a new young performer of traditional material. Miriam plays guitar to accompany herself but her debut album has the addition of keyboards and bass arrangements by Brian Etheridge and Stephen Delft on dulcimer.

At the end of 1979 Miriam moved to South Africa with her then new husband, musician John Erasmus. They quickly built up a solid reputation as performers, recorded several albums and featured on many television programmes.

Miriam returned to England in 2003 and toured as a soloist and is due back for more gigs in December 2004.STOP PRESS!!!Tour for Summer 2006 being arranged through Iconic Music

If my memory is correct she started in the early 70s and was a regular perfomer at the Bradshaw Tavern near Halifax when I was involved in the organisastion.
We were there from late 1969 and left the area in 1977.

Yes I remember at Bradshaw she used to sing Carter Family stuff to autoharp - I particularly remember the ballad of Fair Ellender and Lord Thomas - and although a classically trained exponent of the viola, she played a pretty mean old-time fiddle.

Miriam performed in recent times at Aycliffe Folk Club in Durham and she was excellent - voice, guitar work and rapport with her audience. I spoke to her and we talked about her memories of her 'Tour of the Yorkshire Dales' in the early 1970s when she appeared at several venues including the CB in Arkengarthdale above Reeth, alongside Martin Carter and John Leonard/John Squires. Do any of you recall that tour?

I first saw and met Miriam at the Triangle Folk Club in Edinburgh , back in the 70's and I was totally enchanted ...I mean totally. She was amazing.

fast forward 40+ years ... I went along to see her at the Wee Folk Club in the Royal Oak in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago and she was just as entrancing then as she was the first time I saw her.

Miriam will be returning to the UK in 2018 (I will be arranging a gig for her in Edinburgh ) and I urge you to go and see this remarkable woman if you have the chance. I will most certainly update Mudcatters with details of her gigs next year.
