Subject: Whats up with the Youth From: GUEST,435 Date: 05 Oct 06 - 07:47 PM Reading the "what do you think of morris offspring" thread. . . . . . I got the idea that many people thought that the "Youth" of the folk world/ the youth in general, were not getting the right idea about Folk!!!!!!! whats everyone think?????? |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Paul Burke Date: 06 Oct 06 - 03:15 AM Youth? I'll comment on that when I'm old enough. |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Mo the caller Date: 06 Oct 06 - 05:09 AM I had the priviledge to call one dance with 422 in the callers competition at Whitby this year. They are better as a band than I am as a caller. We enjoyed dancing to them all week. (So they should be, they obviously listen to their parents). Lots of other good groups in the sessions. Alright so some of the 'youth' take folk in a dirrection I don't want to follow, but that's OK, so do some of the oldies. I've not followed the Morris Offspring thread, must look it up. |

I'll save you the time - in summary: Group A says "Morris Offspring are rubbish!" Group B says "Oh no they're not!" Group A: "Oh yes they are!" Group B: "Oh no they're not!" A: "Are!" B: "Are not!" - repeat ad nauseum - |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Mo the caller Date: 06 Oct 06 - 06:00 AM While you were saving me the time I was finding that out. Instead of practising so that I needn't be so jealous of all those young talented musicians. |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 06 Oct 06 - 06:10 AM Doesn't matter what the oldies think of them, they'll be the ones still playing this stuff (and possibly arguing about it) when we're all dead. Hope so, anyway. |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: MBSLynne Date: 06 Oct 06 - 07:53 AM I suppose it depends on what the 'right idea' is. I've been really pleased with what seems to be a sudden influx of youth into the folk scene generally...not just bands and musicians but people attending festivals and clubs. I've had a ball at Sidmouth for the last two years because of the encampment of people aged between 16 and 30 (ish) opposite us. They enjoy it all the way we used to and they have FUN. That's what it is all for as far as I'm concerned. I've spent quite a lot of time having fun with them, and to their credit, they accept me as one of them despite the fact that I'm a generation older. Folk is about people, and people and their lives and doings evolve continually. If we try and keep folk in a glass case it will become a historical relic. Three cheers for the folkie youth and the new excitement they are injecting into the folk scene. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Scrump Date: 06 Oct 06 - 07:59 AM Three cheers for the folkie youth and the new excitement they are injecting into the folk scene Hear, hear, Lynne. They will go in the direction they want to go in, regardless of what the oldies think, and good luck to them! |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: muppitz Date: 06 Oct 06 - 08:07 AM As everything else, the folk scene is going to evolve as the new generation comes into it, some people may not like it but it's going to happen! Personally I think that to survive it will HAVE to evolve and as long as there remains the variety of contemporary and traditional singers as there are now, I don't see a problem. I love traditional stuff and I will always strive to include it in everything I do and everywhere I go! So there! muppitz x |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Mr Red Date: 06 Oct 06 - 08:23 AM Well I find the folkie yout very acceptable but then when you are dressed all in red they rather see you as mad as them. My worry is the musical ones - they are rather talented by and large. |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Tim theTwangler Date: 06 Oct 06 - 12:05 PM When I were a youngster folk clubs were place you would go to have a good time including Drinking and singing along and stomping on the floor. Needless to say most of the real folkies looked on this askance and were generally all shhhhhhhh'd out by the end of the evening. So we stopped going. To repeat my self from other threads, if you go along to our local FC you will find some quite elderly audience members and a selection of ages among the performers ranging from about fourty + and upwards. I think that there must be other fc's the same. You need folk to attend to have a folk club,if you place a lot of restrictions on what is played or what the accepable way of enjoying music is you tend to end up with a historical music club. Which to my way of thinking is a shame. |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: Kaleea Date: 06 Oct 06 - 12:23 PM Our children learn by the example we live each day. If we teach them the love of Folk Music as they grow up, they will love it too. |
Subject: RE: Whats up with the Youth From: GUEST,Bee Date: 06 Oct 06 - 12:38 PM Well... that depends. I grew up with continual radio play of Hank Snow, Merle Haggard. Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Jim Reeves, Burl Ives, et al. I can appreciate to some extent this music, but will never listen to it or play it by choice. OTOH, my mother played guitar and sang us children very old songs, old train songs, coalmining songs, 1930's favourites, old spirituals, some folk. That music has had a life long influence on what I like.... though she may not appreciate where some of it's led me. ;-D |
