Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranger's Song From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 16 Oct 06 - 01:06 AM Ranger(s) are mentioned in several old songs (Girl I Left behind Me, Wicklow Rangers, etc.), but I can find none particularly associated with the War of 1812. Could the 'Ranger' be a ship? I am thinking of John Paul Jones and his eighteen-gun Ranger, but that was some 35 years before 1812. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranger's Song From: DannyC Date: 16 Oct 06 - 09:30 AM The 88th Regiment of Foot (a/k/a The Connaught Rangers) were stationed at Fort Erie (facing southward from Ontario) in 1814. My g-g-g-geandfather O'Dowd was among them. (Please don't tell my neighbors that g/g/g grandpappy was a redcoat.) On a side note, I privately hold a suspicion that the reference "over hills and mountains, and to Amerikay" in the chorus of the march "Whiskey You're The Devil" originates with the Rangers. The troop had been decimated while being repeatedly sent into hard fighting situations under Wellington in the Peninsular Campaign and sent back to Ireland from Lisbon to be reconstituted in 1812 - making them available for use in North America. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranger's Song From: GUEST,DS Date: 16 Oct 06 - 11:21 AM DannyC - Are you saying the, "Ranger's Song," is a variation on, "Whiskey You're The Devil?" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranger's Song From: GUEST,DannyC Date: 16 Oct 06 - 07:03 PM I am suggesting that the regiment might have been the subject of the "Rangers' Song". Don't know the song... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ranger's Song From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 16 Oct 06 - 10:12 PM Dyer explains (link by Ragdal) that the songs are (mostly) his originals and cover a wide range of subjects. I listened to a few of the clips- some I thought were good, but others (Springfield Mountain, e. g.) --- not to my taste. |
