Subject: Tech: You Tube From: dwditty Date: 16 Oct 06 - 01:35 PM I suppose there will be all kinds of reasons about why You Tube is a terrible thing, but if you want to see something like...oh...how about the only 2 surviving film clips of Woody Guthrie...or maybe Christy Moore...or sea shanties (they are there)....Tim Buckley - he's been dead for 30 years or so, but his videos live on. Just go to www.youtube.com and search on your favorite folk person...chances are you will find something. dw Note: I have no interest in You Tube other than viewing videos that interest me. Note 2: Does the recent purchase of You Tube (0 profits) for $1.7 billion by Google signal the resurgence of the US economy? : ) |

Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: Grab Date: 17 Oct 06 - 08:31 AM Clinton, someone must think you're worth it if they use you to advertise the Kildare House. (Unless it's a warning rather than an advert. ;-) It'd be nice to know if/when/how YouTube are going to make a profit. I thought the "eyeballs=value" bullshit got comprehensively trashed in the 1990s Internet bubble. As dwditty says, they're doing nothing except burning through venture capital. It's a great service, sure. Handing out a free car to everyone you see as you walk down the street would be a great service too, but it's not going to make you money... Graham. |

Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: GUEST,Dazbo Date: 19 Oct 06 - 05:47 AM Why do so many of the things I've seen on YouTube the sound is slightly out of synch with the pictures? |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: JohnInKansas Date: 19 Oct 06 - 06:30 AM As a stone age holdover, still on dial up, my only comment on YouTube is that it would be helpful when linking to mention that it's a video. In the US, at least half of the people (and a higher percentage of the poor musicians?) are in areas where high speed connections are unavailable or relatively very expensive, and a 10 minute video clip is about an hour to download on my dial-up. A "half hour news" clip often will take me at least 4 hours to capture before I can watch it. I do check them out sometimes, but it's nice to know what one faces before clicking. Not necessary, just nice. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Oct 06 - 06:01 AM Incidental information: YouTube fans may want to check out the newsflash Adobe buys Serious Magic just as a heads-up on pending brave new worlds in video. From the newsletter providing the above link: "Serious Magic's products make it simple for anyone to create their own video podcast, and it's a natural to merge with some of Adobe's own products." (Article is very brief.) John |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: Grab Date: 20 Oct 06 - 07:05 AM Why do so many of the things I've seen on YouTube the sound is slightly out of synch with the pictures? Possibly connection and file format interacting. Compress video and audio enough to make it (relatively) small, and you lose information. Sync data is almost certainly one of the things they've chucked out, on the grounds that they can (mostly) get away without it and reduce bandwidth and storage. Most streaming video does the same - RealPlayer used to be pretty bad for that too, even doing it for files playing from disk. Graham. |

Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Apr 07 - 10:27 AM I've been told that YouTube is fraught with malware. What about that? |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: dwditty Date: 11 Apr 07 - 10:32 AM I have not experienced any problems there. Remeber, you are not downloading the videos, only viewing them. If your browser is set up to detect malware, it will let you know before it opens it. dw |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: Bill D Date: 11 Apr 07 - 03:22 PM well, dw...that is not quite correct. You are downloading the videos. In order to play, a file must be ON your machine. Usually, unless you take steps to keep it permanently, it is in a temporary folder and will be deleted either when a certain capacity is reached, or when the browser is closed, depending on settings. (You can go TO that folder, rename the video, and move it to a folder where it will be kept, if you wish. They don't make it easy or explain it, but it is not that hard if you want to do it. There are also ways to directly download videos TO the folder you wish.) (btw...this is the same with images. ANY image you view is kept in a cache or temp folder, often/usually with a coded name that is not relevant to the picture.) To address Leenia's question, I have not heard of malware in YouTube, but I suppose it is theoretically possible. I would imagine Google takes step to be relatively sure that all the files IT hosts are safe. |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 11 Apr 07 - 03:32 PM Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: dwditty Date: 11 Apr 07 - 03:59 PM BillD, ACcording to You Tube, you cannot "save" the videos. That being said, there is lots of homemade software available to do just that. If you have a simple way, please provide the steps in a format us technically challenged folks can understand. Appreciate it. dw |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: Nick Date: 12 Apr 07 - 04:54 AM Easiest way I know is to go to Youtubex.com and follow the instructions |
Subject: RE: Tech: You Tube From: Bill D Date: 12 Apr 07 - 02:05 PM I have 2 programs to download YouTube videos...(and the trick Nick notes will work also.) http://youtube-d.com/ and YouRipper but, if you don't want to install programs, try opening a file manager...(Windows Explorer might do, though I never use it)...like http://www.freecommander.com/ and go to start->documents & settings->owner->application data->.....then the name of the browser you are using, such as Firefox (and THIS may be under 'Mozilla')...or Internet Explorer...or Opera.. *(in the newest Opera..version 9, they have thankfully changed all that and put it in the Opera folder!). under this will be SOME file such as 'profile'...then cache or 'cache4'.....(yes, I know this is a bit vague, but they don't WANT you to find it easily). ...and sometimes a folder named 'temporary downloads)In the cache4(for me, anyway, in Opera)or in 'temp downloads) are a bunch of files. You sort them by date, or by size. They may have names like c4s8jk.gif or opro4WCK.wmv or oprWKH.swf or ts53KG.flv. Names like .swf (Shockwave flash) or .flv are the type of files. These can be renamed and moved to a folder of your choice (once you are sure which one you want. Usually the latest...or maybe the largest. These are the files which get deleted at some point when automatic cache management kicks in...or you close your browser. Because different browsers and different version of Windows are not set up exactly the same, I can't specify exact directions to these files, but I think it can be to everyone's advantage to know where your system stores these things. It is obvious that IF you want to intentionally save YouTube or other videos, using one of the various download programs should be easier. |

Comcast has sent us the public service spots they made for the Women's Center where I volunteer, but there is some garbage at the beginning and end I'd like to eliminate. Also, there's a video that is too large a file for our MySpace site, and I'd like to reduce the file size without shortening the video. -Joe- |
