Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Stewart Date: 14 Nov 06 - 12:50 PM Well Bob, you did a great job! About 25 people showed up at the rural B&B called "Lucky Mud" during one of the wettest Novembers on record for Washington State. But snug inside this beautiful house with its high ceiling and view of the surrounding hills, we heard some wonderful songs about Heroes & Hardcases, Fallen Angels, Muck & Rain (of course), When Only Love Will Do, It's Not An Easy Life, and Songs I Sing After Dark. These were woven together with commentary about the songs and Bob's musical journeys. After the concert we had a potluck supper and then gathered for a 'hoot' with members of the Wahkiakum Acoustic Guitar Society and others. It was a pleasant surprise to find so many talented musicians in this rural community: Andrew with his cello and guitar; our B&B host, Sunshine, with his guitar and incredible collection of songs, joined by his wife Jessica with her autoharp and beautiful voice; Doug, with his guitar and songs also recorded the concert; other beautiful voices also added to the mix; my wife, Betty, played her hammered dulcimer, and I played some fiddle and guitar and sang also. What a wonderful afternoon and evening! Us out-of-town guests settled into our B&B beds only to witness an incredible wind storm (gusts up to 70 mph!) traveling up the Columbia River. But that was soon over, the house was intact, and we gathered in the kitchen the next morning for a wonderful breakfast cooked up by our hosts, and some more songs by Sunshine while we ate. We left for the 3 1/2 hour drive back to Seattle through the ever-present rain. The drive along the Columbia River to the Interstate Highway had some of the most beautifull fall color in the trees, also a big detour where the main road was closed by a mud slide. All in all, it was a great chance to get away from Seattle for an afternoon and evening of music with good friends. Thanks Bob! Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: GUEST,mg Date: 14 Nov 06 - 01:23 PM Sounds like fun. I had to defer because the weather was just too bad here, roads closing etc., and my car is pretty old and doesn't go far. But hopefully we can have a repeat in the spring or summer. mg |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Stewart Date: 14 Nov 06 - 07:06 PM A correction from my earlier post about the concert. Our B&B host's name is Sunrise, not Sunshine (I knew it had something to do with sun). Sunrise and his wife Jessica were delightful hosts. This is from an earlier flyer on their web site: "Sunrise and Jessica have been pleasing fair-goers with their music for 5 years. From Jessica's hot autoharp picking and Sunrise's country style guitar to their clean as mountain stream harmonies, they'll thrill young and old alike. Sunrise and Jessica are country people from Skamokawa, Wash., where they live on a small farm with their two sons. They can bring warmth and energy and top-notch music to your entertainment program this year." It's not every place that your B&B hosts serenade you with good music at breakfast! They were professional touring musicians for many years before settling down to the country life. So if you're in SW Washington State and are looking for a good B&B, this is it. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Amergin Date: 14 Nov 06 - 07:45 PM I was so disappointed....I could not find the place for the life of me....drove up and down the road for about an hour and could not find it....so I drove home. |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Stewart Date: 15 Nov 06 - 04:06 PM Amergin, sorry you missed it. It was about 9 miles outside of the town of Skamokawa, at the end of a paved road. Next time check the B&B web site for directions. There's sure to be another good house concert and/or 'hoot' there. Or just go for the beautiful scenery and country setting. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Deckman Date: 15 Nov 06 - 04:29 PM Amergin, I also am dissapointed that you were not successful in finding the B&B. It WAS TOUGH to locate. It was the first time "Bride Judy" and I had been there also. The sign indicating the location was JUST at the point where the paved/gravel/mud road became the "Primitive Road." I remember that Judy mentioned ... "Just how much more primitive can it get?" To be fair, that area had just been swept with a weeks worth of terrible wind and rain storms. And those terrible storms actually had a lot to do with my own personal satisfaction with the concert and the hoot that followed. Anone who managed to get there, had to REALLY WANT to be there. Which meant that I had a very appreciative audience! And they were very responsive and sang the roof off the place during the group songs. Someone, sometime, should start a thread about "audiences." Without a willing and enthusiastic audience, what would we performers be? As Stew said, the place and setting was beautiful. And we couldn't have asked for better hosts and accomedations. "The Inn At Lucky Mud" was beautiful, well designed, and perfect for a house concert. The owners designed this structure themselves, and they are musicians themselves. So everything was ready, rooms full of instruments, great acoustics, and everything said ... "WELCOME!" I truly enjoyed myself. Anything I wanted was quickly offered and I was made very comfortable. I was thinking on the drive home that I really don't remember any place I've ever performed before (and there have been several) that was better prepared or more welcoming for me. It was a joy to be there. I strongly suspect that there will be many more house concerts down there in the months to come. It's a perfect place. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: GUEST,mg Date: 15 Nov 06 - 04:38 PM no no no I am glad you did not sing the roof off...we have great danger here now of roofs flying off in the wind...big high winds here now...mg |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Stewart Date: 16 Nov 06 - 01:54 PM "Someone, sometime, should start a thread about "audiences." Without a willing and enthusiastic audience, what would we performers be?" That's a good point, Bob. You had a great audience, and this was during a rainy afternoon/evening in one of the most rural parts of the state, and about 25 people were there. It was a very warm and cozy atmosphere. Several weeks ago I went to a concert in North Seattle, in a large hall (could seat 250 max), with two of our best local singer-songwriters, and only ten people in the audience (lots of empty space). Big city - small rural community, are we mmissing something in the big city? Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: GUEST,one of the audience Date: 18 Nov 06 - 12:14 AM Bob (Stew, et al), That was a fine afternoon and evening. Thanks so much for coming down and giving us an excuse to have such a wonderful time! The range of instruments was impressive and I do believe the crowd of half-drunk women chanting "cello! cello!" was a first. ;-) Stew, any time you want more than 10 people, come on down. Betty's got a group of folk who'd love to learn more about the hammered dulcimer. And I'm betting we can rustle up some food again too. Audiences are happy to cook. |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Folkie101 Date: 18 Nov 06 - 01:00 AM Hi Bob, So happy to read that your audience greatly enjoyed your music! Good also, to know you were treated well by "The Inn". Cheers chum, Folkie |
Subject: RE: Bob Nelson (Deckman) Concert Nov 12-Wash State From: Doug Mythical Date: 18 Nov 06 - 08:40 AM What a great concert...between the practiced stylin's of Bob's light-fingered renditions and the complementary elocution of Bob's background stories wooing the crowd (and providing context for each song and presentation), the concert was a delight to all in attendance. Following the concert, the potluck dinner provided quite a range of scrumptious fixins' -- a deep-fried turkey served in large handblown glass bowl ( from CollupyGlass ), rosemary dijon chicken, scalloped potatoes, bluecheese cheesecake with blueberry habanero chutney, homemade baguette bread, and a treasure trove of deserts (apple pie, pear cake, pumkin pudding, and much more) Once our bellies were full (!) the hoot was kicked off in style with Sunrise Fletcher's rousing rendition of the Wild Life of Lucky Mud. Stewart and Betty Hendrickson enchanted the audience with a range of vocal stylings and fiddling (Stewart) as well as hammered dulcimer (Betty). Andrew Emlem added depth and dimension to a number of songs with his skilled fingering on cello, and joined with Sunrise and Jessica Fletcher and Fern Fey (all of whom are part of the Willapa Hills group) in a number of songs backed by 12-string and 6-string guitars and Jessica's autoharp. Bob continued to delight the group, pulling songs from the annals of American folk music, providing illuminating stories and marvelous performances for another dozen or two songs throughout the hoot. While the entire range of songs and participants were too numerous to list, to hoot was an wonderful event that will remain in the hearts and minds of those in attendance for a long time to come. Bob, thank you so much for providing the concert and the excuse to have a hoot -- also thanks to Stewart, Betty, Andrew, Sunrise, Jessica, Candice, Fern, and other who sang or played. ALSO, many thanks to all that prepared the great food for the event--special thanks to Beth, Treasure and Michelle Collupy, Jessica Fletcher, Joyce, and everyone else that provided the delectable dinner and dessert. And extra special thanks to the innkeepers, Sunrise and Jessica Fletcher, that hosted the event at The Inn at Lucky Mud |
