Subject: Obit: (UK) Paul Walters From: Liz the Squeak Date: 23 Oct 06 - 04:50 AM Known as Dr Wallington P. de Wynters Magillicuddy Walters, Dr Poorly Waters and other derivatives - the Radio 2 Senior Producer Paul Walters has died after a long illness. Biog here... with comments from fans of the 'Wake up to (Terry) Wogan' show. Paul is credited with introducing many names to mainstream UK listening via the Wogan show, particularly Eva Cassidy. One of his most infamous moments is the morning he'd had one too many muffins, and 'made the passing of the wind' live on air, thus rendering the entire studio and much of the nation speechless for some time. It's his fault that I'm sitting here in my TOG sweatshirt and listening to some damn fine music that he selected for the programmes over the years (available on the Terry Wogan CD - 'Top of the Morning' - it was a present!). Subject: RE: Obit: (UKRadio 2 Producer) Paul Walters (Oct 06) From: Terry K Date: 24 Oct 06 - 02:03 AM Paulie was a long-time golfing mate of mine. What is less known about hime is that he was a great guitarist - I was privileged to have him play guitar at my house. A modest, private man, generous with his time, appreciator of fine things, very sadly missed. And Liz, I missed the broadcast of "the passing of the wind" but I'll bet it was followed by Paulie's favourite comment at such times - "better an empty house than a bad tenant". Terry |
Subject: RE: Obit: (UKRadio 2 Producer) Paul Walters (Oct 06) From: GUEST,Partridge Date: 24 Oct 06 - 03:15 AM Monday mornings are bad enough, but yesterday when I heard the news about Dr Wally I cried all the way to work. Wogan and gang start my day usually with a laugh or a smile. He will be missed and I thank him for lots of great music and his very good sense of humour. Pat |
Subject: RE: Obit: (UKRadio 2 Producer) Paul Walters (Oct 06) From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 Oct 06 - 04:52 AM Ah.. his biog mentions the guitar playing. You too can hear it if you purchase the 'Janet and John' CD, via the TOGS website which will raise money for Children in Need, a cause that Dr Wally was a great supporter of. Other TOGS will know what I'm talking about, the rest of you will have no clue. Buy it anyway. It's a fantastic way to liven up your car journey... actually no... don't play it whilst driving. Or on the bus or tube... you'll be put away for sitting there giggling to yourself.... Actually.... buy it online, it will come in plain brown wrapper to an address of your choice, so you can listen to it and guffaw in private. LTS |
Subject: RE: Obit: (UKRadio 2 Producer) Paul Walters (Oct 06) From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 24 Oct 06 - 07:31 AM Hi Liz. I can certainly confirm that Paul was a good guitarist. Having worked on the show for more years than I care to mention with Paul, many was the conversations we had discussing tunings, techniques, etc. (Much to Terrys chagrin!) Although we had all known what the inevitable outcome would be for Paul, it makes it no easier, now that it has happened. It was a pleasure to know the man. His memory will live on. Kind Regards Ralphie x |

Subject: RE: Obit: (UKRadio 2 Producer) Paul Walters (Oct 06) From: GUEST,Eye Lander Date: 30 Oct 06 - 05:17 PM I cried when I heard the news last Saturday, it just seemed like losing a friend. Last night I listened to 'The Accident' (of the windy type) on Terry's Web site but I am blowed if I can fine it now to do a blue clicky! Senior moment I guess. Jillie |
