There are a number of online biographies of the great gospel/spiritual vocalist Mahalia Jackson. This site may provide the most comprehensive information online: http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/jackson_mahalia/bio.jhtml

http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/music/artist/card/0,,448113.,00.html includes a vintage photo of Mahalia Jackson and the following sound clips of her singing these songs:

It Is Well With My Soul

Roll Jordan Roll

My God Is Real

I Found the Answer

Walkin' to Jerusalem

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

In the Upper Room

I Will Move on up a Little Higher

If You See My Saviour

Down by the Riverside

In My Home over There

If We Never Needed the Lord Before (We Sure Do Need Him Now)

By the way, "Mahalia" is a Hebrew & Arabic female name which means "tender" ; "affection"

What a voice! And even the glare and glitz of TV couldn't hide the warmth and genuineness of her personality.

When we finally got a record player (and before we got a TV), in the '60s, the first album I bought was a Mahalia Jackson record for my mother's birthday - she loved Mahalia. The record's still home on the shelf, cover much faded. It was played a lot over the years.

I actually saw Mahalia live in about 1961....even as a young man, I was awed at her voice and 'presence'.

I recently found some sound files or her and happily refreshed my faded memories.
