Mudcatters who don't know already should be delighted to learn that the 1968 (?) LP, Once I Loved, by Sarah and Rita Keane of Caherlistrane, Co. Galway has just been reissued on CD. Claddagh CC4CD.

I can't tell you anything more than that, except that seminal is not a bad word to use here. So are mesmerising, stunning, wonderful and breathtaking.

The complete track list is below but for anyone who doesn't know, Lord Donegal is their staggering 7 minute version of the Child ballad, Lord Lovell.

On a recent thread about harmony, someone asked "why sing in unison?" I believe the Keane sisters are an example of how beautiful unison singing can be. (I've only heard a very small sample.)

(to continue) In fact, credit where credit's due: it was Peta Webb who played that sample and highlighted the unison singing as part of a workshop on Irish singing at Pinewoods Folk Music Week, in 2000.

Thanks Fred for this great news. The singing of the Keane Sistrs is sublime. My copy of the album is almost worn grey so I will be out for the CD forthwith. Back in the 70's I persuaded the sisters to come to England to sing on a festival I ran at that time. The impact that these two shy and dignified ladies made still gladdens me. I recall a listener at one of their sessions weeping for joy at the sheer beauty of their singing. I urge you all to get this CD. Let the glorious vocal music of the Keane Sisters cast it's spell over you. Ypu won't regret it. Burl

So The Banks of the Lee isin't on the CD? That's the tune I listen to most on the LP.

I must buy it, the whole family are amazing singers and great musicians. A nephew from Corofin, Co Clare, John Flanaghan (now living in Galway, singing, dancing and playing the flute) ex-all-Ireland champion. I don't know if John ever released an album singing or playing, maybe someone could let me know. An amazing singer, I first recorded him singing at the All Ireland Fleadh in Buncrana back in 1977 I think it was. I hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks.

I got the cd last week end and since then it's been in my cd player with no ther albums in between.
I can say only this: GET IT ASAP! It's a 'must have' for anyone who loves listening to Irish singing. It's one of the best Irish albums I've ever heard (and my collection of Irish music amounts to about 750 albums now, so I know what I'm talking about a bit).

It's great news indeed. According to a brief note in the tray liner the album was recorded in Dublin and Tuam's Convent of Mercy in 1969.

However, much as I welcome this reissue I reckon it's somewhat shoddy of Claddagh Records not to have expanded upon the original notes by Seán Mac Réamoinn. It would have been very easy to have provided more detailed information about the songs on the album and, very much
moreover, told us more about the Keane sisters and their legacy.
