Subject: Tech: iTunes7 - Is it safe yet?
From: Zhenya

I'm thinking about upgrading from iTunes6 to iTunes7, mainly because I'm interested in getting one of the new iPod nanos.

But I've read a lot of online comments about the program still being very buggy. Then again, I've seen comments from people who already have their new ipods and iTunes7 and seem to be getting along fine.

However, no one I know personally has attempted an upgrade yet. So I'm curious to hear of any Mudcatter's experiences with this.

If you've upgraded to iTunes7, or tried to, how did you find the upgrade process – any major problems upgrading or using the new version? If it's up and running, is it adversely affecting any other music programs, CD or DVD burning, or anything else on your computer?

Thanks for any comments, tips, or warnings!

Zhenya

I've got it--it works fine--I had no trouble upgrading--it's 7.0.1-I actually got it because I had a problem because something or other needed the current version to run--no regrets.

No problems at all, I simply obey the Apple commands and update whenever they tell me to, though somehow I seem to have 7.0.1.8 on the PC and 7.0.1.7 on the Mac. They both work fine.

We've got two nanos and two shuffles. No problems after the upgrade with any of them (in fact seems less quirky than before when using different iPods on same PC/different log-ins)

So far so good, I've got one of those 30GB video ones, it's slowed my PC down a little but I think that more due to the age of my PC than anything else!

Thanks for these comments - I'm very encouraged by what I'm hearing. I forgot to mention I'm on a Windows PC, not a Mac, so I don't know if that will make a difference. (One comment above suggests they both work fine.)

I also just noticed this morning that there is a further upgrade that just came out - iTunes 7.0.2. This is mainly for the new iPod shuffle, but apparently corrects some of the other iTunes7 issues that some people have been having.

I'm waiting about a week or so to see online reactions to this new upgrade, and then will probably try the upgrade myself.

What's the big deal? It's a free piece of software and apple are upgrading it nearly every month! It now imports the album covers and the display is great. It's not going to blow your PC up!!!

I have 7.0 running on my Mac. I've noticed a few differences - when refreshing the iPod the prog. tries to go through the complete song list to check which ones are already part of the data bank of titles/artists. So, if you've got some download or copied song it comments "this title is not included in.....", which gets tedious and needs disabling. It's none of Apple's business what I have or haven't got in iTunes - is this what Guest means about intellectual copyright being compromised?

Also, the prog can link you into the iTunes store when you don't want to be, so disable this one too.

Dont put the albub covers on the ipod , they just take up space that could be used for the songs

NormanD - Does it go through the complete track list every time you synch a few new items to the iPod? That could take quite a long time, as I've got over 8000 tracks already on my current 60G iPod and still adding. How would you disable that feature if you don't want it?

Most of the CDs I've added are in the iTunes database. However, some that weren't were custom CDs I ordered from Smithsonian Folkways. So certainly quite legitimate. Other CDs that aren't in there are also quite legal, but just very obscure. And then there's the 10 tracks from the CD I made of my little niece singing about her cats...

Shaneo - that's a good point re the album art, and I hadn't thought of that. I usually keep the backlight set for only a short time to save the battery, so I only briefly see the cover art anyway. I'm curious if you or anyone else knows how much space the cover art is actually stealing from the tunes?

Zhenya: "Does it go through the complete track list every time you synch a few new items to the iPod?"

No, it just did it a couple of times after installing 7.0 - maybe it just went through them initially? I can't remember seeing anything to "disable" otherwise I would have done.

I notice V 7.2 is now available. Anything there worth bothering with?

NormanD - OK, thanks for clarifying that. (about the syncing).

I haven't done the upgrade yet myself - I was trying to get a sense first of whether most people were able to do it successfully. It sounds like that's the case, so I will probably do it soon, probably within the next week or so, when I get a space of free time. Version 7.2 is supported to be mainly for the new IPod shuffle, but is also supposed to add more stability to iTunes7.

By the way, if anyone doesn't already know about this, a good very detailed resource for iTunes and iPod is iLounge . I especially like their detailed product reviews, which include lots of close up photos of the items, and give the pros and cons of the products, and, often, comparisons with similar products.

I've had an iPod nano for about 18 months, iTunes worked fine with my PC running XP and it loaded ok onto my new laptop.

Problem is, it doesn't appear to like Vista. Keeps telling me to upgrade to iTunes 7 but won't let me. Something about Visual basic Script, firewalls etc.

I just don't understand, anyone out there eperienced this?

Regards

John R

John R.

I'm still using XP so can't help you directly. However, why don't you post a separate thread titled something like "iTunes - Windows Vista Problem". That might catch the right people's eyes. (Although technically you did the right thing by adding it onto a related existing thread, but I think it's a different enough issue to warrant its own thread.) Good luck.

P.S. Have you checked the discussion forums at iLounge.com and Apple's own site? I've found both of those helpful when I'm stuck with something iPod or iTunes related.
