Subject: OBIT?????? Jinx Davis --could it be???
From: mg
Date: 09 Nov 06 - 09:15 PM

I am so hoping this is not true but I was just reading the Oregonian this evening and saw his name, with his picture, but the date was 2005. I know I heard from him this fall about Sunnycamp...

Can someone please confirm and please forgive me if I posted this in error but there was a picture as well as the name.

Anyway, what a wonderful singer and songwriter he was/is. Jinx, if you are here, check in. mg

Good lord. Surely not. I met him in Juneau and greatly enjoyed the visit. I also have a couple of his CDs that he sent me later.

I believe it is true. Here is something in Artichoke Music in Portland. http://www.artichokemusic.com/news/.

We will have to get his music out there for people to here. He was the best Oregon songwriter I knew. And such a nice man. My condolances to Julie and the family. mg

Could someone perhaps clean up the header? Thanks.

I found the same thing just now, mg. Along with his photo.

I fixed the link in Mary's post. You will have to scroll down the page to the story. I also fixed the header.

God be good to him. What a smile!

Mick

Portland Folk Society sent this out to everyone on their email list.

The Memorial Event is winding up just about now. (10 pm PST).

Jinx was another of those larger-than-life people that we all meet from time to time.

Here is something I found on the internet. I think it is probably song lyrics. mg

Oregon Country
(Jinx Davis) used by permission
Fall comes to Oregon, summer is gone
Up on the mountain I'm watching the dawn
Sippin' hot coffee and watchin' the breeze
That rolls down the canyons and brings my mind ease

Well it's Oregon country, the rain's comin' down
Water is soakin' the ground all around
Inside there's a fire, good friends all around
Oregon country, the rain's comin' down

It's autumn in Oregon, a chill in the air
Fog in the morning, the afternoon fair
Down the Columbia clouds roll away
Watching the end of an Oregon day

High up in the Cascades the snow starts to fall
Out over Malheur you'll hear the geese call
Winds off the ocean chase clouds 'cross the sky
I can smell that rain comin' and I'm feelin' high

Oh, dear God, no!
This is a huge loss for the Portland folk music community, as well as for Julie and the rest of his family.
I've known Jinx since the late 1970s, both through the folk music gatherings and in other contexts (where I first met Julie around 1989).   Such a great musician, dancer, songwriter, and all-around guy.

I feel even worse because I missed the memorial gathering.   (Too many email boxes and I didn't check the one where PFS sent the emails in the last few days.)   This is some of the saddest news I've heard since my own dear sister passed away earlier this year. And even more shocking because it was so unexpected.

I know that much of Jinx's music will live on, and I hope Mudcat can help that happen.

Hope you're up there jamming with Merritt Herring, Rick Fielding, and so many others in the heavenly band, Jinx.

Genie

I was the docent at a house museum that Jinx visited and we had a great chat. It was a beautiful, sunny day (we get one from time to time!) and I brought out a couple of chairs to the lawn and a guitar for him to play. I enjoyed his visit very much.

Missed this thread the first time around. Now rectified and Jinx has his entry in the "In Memoriam" thread. Rest in peace Jinx.
