Subject: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: Fliss Date: 10 Nov 06 - 03:19 PM Dear friends It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Jon passed away on Tuesday evening (7th November). He had been suffering from cancer for a couple of years. Jon's reputation as a great fiddle player and singer is well known both in Shropshire and the wider UK folk scene. His wit and musicianship will be greatly missed by all his friends. He led the session at the Boat Inn, Jackfield, also at the Unicorn Inn, Ludlow. He entertained at the Bassa Villa in Bridgnorth and also performed with the Brockton Band at events around the country. Im sure you will like to join me in offering Sue and the family condolences at this sad time. If anyone would like details of the funeral please pm me. Do add your memories of Jon on this thread. Fliss May the road rise with you And the wind be at your back Go raibh an ghaoth i goónai ar do chúl Go n-éiri and bóthar leat |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: Fliss Date: 15 Nov 06 - 04:26 PM Ive just come back from Jon's funeral and wake. The church at Much Wenlock was packed out, standing room only. We all sang along to Jon's recording of 'Southernmost of Dales'. Very moving. The wake at the Feathers Inn, Brockton was also packed to capacity with family and friends. A lot of well known musicians. At one point there were two sessions going on. Last Thursday at the Boat Inn was a very special session as Sue and the family came down and Gemma and Esther played and sang. The monthly session at the Unicorn Inn in Ludlow is this Friday and I am sure it will be an evening of memories and tributes to Jon. slan leat fliss http://www.agpstudio.co.uk/jon_hayward.html for friends who would like info about Jon's CDs. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: Herga Kitty Date: 16 Nov 06 - 02:29 AM Very sad news - I've only just seen this thread, but I heard from Tim Edwards on Tuesday, and spoke to Taff last night. Jon made a tremendous contribution to the Theatre Bar singarounds at Sidmouth, and we shall miss him very much. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: The Barden of England Date: 16 Nov 06 - 03:56 AM Such desperately sad news. My condolences to his family at this time. I last saw John in The Bedford in Sidmouth this year, and was so pleased to see that he was still with us, and I must say looking good, but he must have been putting on a brave face for us. I will certainly miss his fine fiddle playing and that wonderful voice and I'm so glad I bought his CD then - it will remind me of a good, brave man. Rest easy John . John Barden |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: Brian Hoskin Date: 16 Nov 06 - 07:03 AM I've only just seen this thread and caught up with this very sad news. I've been an exile from Shropshire for a few years now, but well remember playing in many sessions with Jon. A particular memory is of being lucky enough to experience the twin fiddles of Jon and Dan Cassidy in full magestic flow. Condolences to Jon's family, he will be sorely missed. Brian |

Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: the lemonade lady Date: 02 Dec 06 - 05:12 AM Because of changes of address and phone number I have only just found out about Jon's death. I knew he was very ill but it's all happened too quickly. He helped at Bishop's Castle Folk Weekend running non-stop sessions and singarounds. This man was a genius-wonderful voice, brilliant fiddler (fire extinguisher needed to put out burning bow)and excellent song writer. Jon you will always be remembered by me for your song about the gypsy girl with red hair. I'm so glad I knew you Much love and best wishes to his family. Sal |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: the lemonade lady Date: 02 Dec 06 - 10:34 AM I've found the song, it's 'The Tinkerman's Daughter' Jon sang it so beautifully. Thank you Sir, for me it'll always be yours. Sal |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: Fliss Date: 04 Dec 06 - 05:50 PM Yes and we know a musician who thought it was the ' red head dedan' and wondered what that was!! I liked Jon's version of Star of the County Down. We all sang 'Midnight on the Water' for Jon at the Unicorn, Ludlow, on the 3rd Friday in Nov and drank a toast to the fiddler. fliss |

Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: GUEST,Jon's middle daughter Date: 05 Dec 06 - 08:20 AM Fliss, We've found a tape of Dad singing Star of the County Down in the 1970s, though with the mandolin rather than the fiddle... If anyone else has recordings of my Dad from sessions, please pass them on. Thanks for your comments everyone. Gem |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jonathan Hayward - Shropshire Fiddler From: fogie Date: 06 Dec 06 - 04:22 AM Sorry to have caught up so late with this sad news. Jon telephoned me a few months ago to catch up with me and tell me his shocking news, I then caught up with him in Ludlow, and was surprised by how well he looked, and wondered how things were going. He will certainly be remembered as a larger than life figure, with a near operatic voice, and furious fiddle playing. In the 80's myself, Jon, Tony Harris, Bendigo and Laine used to meet up weekly at the Compasses in Wigmore, and I think we used to compete with each other, certainly I extended myself musically during those years.Jon learned The Red headed Ann from Laine I believe. Jon and Tony bought identical guitars, and played together for a while. I was always doing my own thing but used to see Jon a lot. When we met up we sometimes accompanied one another. If Jon wasnt happy about my accompaniment he would put one arm round my shoulder and tap my shoulder. I used to meet with the Charlton Arms group a few years ago, before Jon became ill, and will always remember his commanding presence. My condolences to Sue and his girls. |
