Subject: Lyr Req: Rolling Hills of New Jersey extra verses From: Big Mick Date: 11 Nov 06 - 02:13 PM At the Getaway this past weekend, at a very early hour on Monday morning, John Roberts and Tony Barrant's excellent parody was sung. Several of the lads threw in extra verses that had been written, and I got the impression that there are a number of verses others have written. I would like to collect some of them, especially the ones sung this weekend. Anyone got verses to add? All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: Barry Finn Date: 11 Nov 06 - 03:00 PM The last verse was by Karl. Something about her asking him to kiss her where it smells so he drove her back to NJ. He did a great job singing it. He said there was another verse from someone else. I wondered if he knew John Roberts, who was standing just off to his side when he was singing it, wrote it. Barry |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: Big Mick Date: 11 Nov 06 - 03:54 PM Yep, Barry, there were two verses sung at the end. The one by Karl, and another fella sang one, and ran out the door. One of them referenced taking the PATH, rhyming token with Hoboken. I am sure there are more out there. C'mon folks. Mick |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Nov 06 - 04:04 PM You know, sometimes I've wondered how it feels to be John and Tony, and to realize that your real fame in life comes from being known for writing "The Rolling Mills of New Jersey." I mean, John and Tony are wonderful performers and all, but how many people can name another song they've written? -Joe Offer, known for singing "Welcome at our House" and a bastardized version of "Key of R"- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra ver From: Dave'sWife Date: 11 Nov 06 - 10:16 PM darn - I was hoping this was to the tune of The Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia. It could be adapted tho! I'd best get to work on it - I'd do it as the "Black rolling rivers of North (or maybe central) New jersey" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: Bill D Date: 11 Nov 06 - 11:01 PM well, Karl lives around here...I'll see if I can locate him from the list of attendees and have him dictate them over the phone or something...(or even pop onto Mudcat and post 'em!) They were kinda good, huh? I was too nonplussed with that 'smell' verse to write it down! ;>0 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: Big Mick Date: 11 Nov 06 - 11:08 PM Bill, help an ole boy out here. Who was the lad that sang the extra verse just before Karl did the "smell" verse? I remember through the bourbon induced haze that we finished the regular verses, there was a slight pause and he jumped out with a verse, I think about Hoboken (different from the Roberts/Barrants verse), then Karl popped his out to end it. He left as soon as he sang it. Mick |

Also, BILL Ddid you find a way to contact Karl? Doesn't he work in a music shop somewhere? I thought he was up by Bayonne somewhere.Mick |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra ver From: Bill D Date: 19 Jul 07 - 06:01 PM oh...my...I forgot this thread. Was Karl the guy with the thick glasses who had the big guitar? I see him at Glen Echo every June... There were 2 guys I didn't know.... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: GUEST,Meadow Muskrat Date: 19 Jul 07 - 06:29 PM Sounds like i missed a good event-Where was it? its been along time but i think one of the verses in question goes: When your'e alone in N.Y. and heartbroken Rush right down and buy a subway token, Then take the train back to Hoboken, and then your back in N.J. Peter Mahoney a musician from Lodi had a verse years ago that lamented an ill-advised move to Chicago and subsequent relief at returning to N.J., but I don't remember how it goes or know if it made the rounds. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra verses From: Ferrara Date: 19 Jul 07 - 11:58 PM I once heard a great verse at the Royal Mile Pub shantey sing. It went something like this: Dere's a road we love ta hate, Da parkway dey call da Golden State It's free ta get on, but not to leave -- Ya pay ta get outa New Joisey! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra ver From: Jeri Date: 20 Jul 07 - 09:17 AM The rhyme scheme's a bit embuggered. Maybe: Dere's a road we love ta hate, Da parkway dey call da Golden State It's free ta get on, but if ya wanna escape -- Ya [gotta] pay ta get outta New Joisey! I don't know that that's RIGHT, but it sounds better to me. And Mick, Tony's last name is BARRANDFrom my own personal experience with da rest stops of New Joisey*: If on da pike at night you flee And stop for a bite or to pee Drive away half asleep and you might be Headed back into New Joisey * I hear calling it 'Joisey' is considered justification for homicide in the NJ court system. I don't know if that's true though. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling Mills of New Jersey extra ver From: Jeri Date: 20 Jul 07 - 01:37 PM Yeah, we KNOW! Really! I swear I knew. I was just trying not to be pedantic. (Anybody buying this?) I do remember discussing the extra verses recently - maybe at David Jones' house concert at SINSULL's. Maybe at John Roberts' (sometime partner of Tony BarranD). Joe, way back, you said, "You know, sometimes I've wondered how it feels to be John and Tony, and to realize that your real fame in life comes from being known for writing 'The Rolling Mills of New Jersey.'" Maybe some people are more familiar with the song than anything else, but even a good number of them don't know John & Tony wrote it. I believe most people know them for Nowell Sing We Clear, and their other recordings together. I know them because it was when I was listening to them that I fell in love with trad English acapella singing. Some people may remember them from 3AM tag games through the Fox Hollow campsite or the sun-rise singing of 'Barbra Ann'. Serious musicians with a serious sense of humor. |
