HOP ALONG PETER From Old Time String Band Songbook. From Fisher Hendley and his Aristocratic Pigs. Key of G. Recorded by Highwoods String Band.

Old Uncle Peter, he got tight
Started up to heaven on a stormy night
The road being rough and him not well
He lost his way and went to…

CHORUS: Hop along, Peter, where you going?
Hop along, Peter, where you going?
Hop along, Peter, won't you bear in mind
I ain't coming back till the gooseberry time.

Old Mother Hubbard and her dog were Dutch
A bow legged rooster and hobbled on a crutch
Hen chawed tobacco and the duck drank wine
The goose played the fiddle on the pumpkin vine. CHORUS

Down in the barnyard playing seven-up
The old tom cat and the little yellow pup
The old Mother Hubbard, she's a-picking out the fleas
The rooster in the cream jar up to his knees. CHORUS

I've got a sweet gal this here town
If she weighs an ounce, she weighs seven hundred
Every time my sweet girl turns once around
The heel of her shoe makes a hole in the ground. CHORUS

Thanks peace,

I already have those lyrics and 4 similar sets of lyrics. They all seem to have been taken from JE Mainer's version.

I need the original lyrics by Frank Dumont.

Hi, Richie:

I'd no sooner posted when I saw the specific reference to Dumont and realized the lyrics must be different. I will go look and try to get it right. (Hope I have some luck.)

Bcblack@aculink.net

asking where one might find the words.

Thanks,

I'll send an e-mail. I surfed around the American Memory site some but couldn't find that song by Dumont (althought some of his songs are there).

I've got a version of Hop Along Peter by the New Lost City Ramblers on an ancient album recorded live at a Newport Folk Festival. I think the words are much the same as in the version written out by by Peace. I'll dig the album out and check.

My Father used to sing this song all the time but his version was alittle different.

it went

CHORUS:
Hop along, Peter, where you going?
Hop along, Peter, where you going?
Hop along, Peter, won't you bear in mind
I ain 't comin' back till the gooseberry time.

Old mother Hubbard and her dog were Dutch,
Had a bow-legged rooster and he hobbled on a crutch.
Hen chewed tobacco and the duck drank wine;
The goose played the fiddle on the pumpkin vine.
chorus
Down in the barnyard playing seven-up,
was the old tom cat and the little leopard pup,
Mother Hubbard, she's a-pickin' out the fleas,
Rooster in the cream jar up to his knees.
chorus
O I got a woman and a bulldog too,
The woman don't love me but the bulldog do.
I had a dog name was jack,
put him in the barn and he peed out a crack.
Chorus
Old Uncle Peter, he got tight,
Started up to heaven on a stormy night.
The road being rough and him not well,
He lost his way and he went... to.....
HEAVEN...   HEAVEN...   HEAVEN
