Subject: Obit: Jimmy Longhi From: Suffet Date: 28 Nov 06 - 09:45 AM Greetings: According to a death notice in the November 26, 2006, issue of The New York Times, Vincent J. Longhi passed away last week at the age of 90. Better known as Jimmy Longhi, he was a singer, an activist in the National Maritime Union, and one of Woody Guthrie's closest pals. Jimmy served together with Woody and with Cisco Houson in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II. Woody wrote a song called Seamen Three about the trio, and Jimmy later wrote a book called Woody, Cisco, and Me about their time together. After the war, Jimmy attended law school and later became Woody's attorney. Maybe someone has some additional information to share? --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Obit: Jimmy Longhi (Nov 2006) From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Nov 06 - 11:48 PM I only met him once, at Seaman's Church Institute, at he gave me a copy of the book. After I read it, I passed it around to my family. Much to my surprised pleasure, I got it back after everyone had read it. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Jimmy Longhi (Nov 2006) From: GUEST Date: 29 Nov 06 - 12:16 PM I believe Jimmy Longhi once unsuccesfully ran for Congress as a Republican! That was in a galaxy long ago and far away, and he was also endorsed by the American Labor Party, which later became the Liberal Party after kicking out those who wouldn't take an anti-Communist pledge. New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia was also a candidate of both the Republican Party and the American Labor Party. The G.O.P. ain't what it used to be, Ain't what it used to be, Ain't what it used to be, The G.O.P. ain't what it used to be, Many long years ago. |
