Subject: RE: Petr Amberly recorded by George Hamilton 1V From: Date: 15 Mar 99 - 05:35 PM Larry Gorman wrote the song. Why do you need Hamilton's version? [in Dt as Peter Emberley] |
Subject: RE: Petr Amberly recorded by George Hamilton 1V From: Date: 15 Mar 99 - 05:52 PM Edward (Sandy) Ives sang this on Folkways FH 5323. At the time he thought it was by John C. Calhoun, but I think later he credited it to Gorman. I don't have Prof. Ives book on Gorman to check with. Amberly died in 1881.

Subject: RE: Petr Amberly recorded by George Hamilton 1V From: Date: 15 Mar 99 - 06:09 PM It looks like I was wrong. The Traditional Ballad Index [Mucat's Links] lists it as by Calhoun, and sometimes attributed to Gorman. |
Subject: RE: Petr Amberly recorded by George Hamilton 1V From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 15 Mar 99 - 06:47 PM It is in the database. I always sing it when someone challenges me to sing a New Brunswick song, although I suppose it is much a PEI song as a New Brunswick song. There are any number of versions now sung. Ryan's Fancy did a nice version but that LP is now deleted. Jim Payne sang it on the CD he recently did with Fergus O'Byrne, "Wave Over Wave". Oddly enough, few bands from eastern Canada seem to know it, although when I was standing in a local Irish pub a few months ago a version came over the sound-system that I had never heard before. |
Subject: RE: Petr Amberly recorded by George Hamilton 1V From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 16 Mar 99 - 06:45 PM I should have also mentioned that it is sometimes called Peter Emberlay. I guess you'd have to go look at his tombstone to make certain. A songbook I have says "It is generally accepted that John Calhoun of Boiestown, New Brunswick, authored this song, although some insist it is from the pen of Larry Gorman. Peter Emberlay died in a logging accident near Boiestown. He was born in Prince County, PEI." |
