Subject: Eric Roche's book/improving technique
From: Big Al Whittle

Since I got ill and had to stop work (this is the first xmas since god knows how long I've not been dashing round doing gigs) I've had a lot of time to practice guitar. I play acoustic/folky style guitar. I wondered about getting Eric Roche's book.

I've glanced in it, but it looks a very heavy read. I'm not sure if I'm smart/clever enough at concentrating, to cope with a lot of music theory.

Does anybody else have other suggestion more straightforward suggestion to improve guitar technique - or have they tried the late great Eric's book?

Hi Big Al – Sorry to hear your health has stopped you gigging for a while. I have seen you play at Spondon a couple of times this year and both times really enjoyed your set. I usually hang around with Stella & Irvine.
Eric's book is a must, I take it your talking about the Guitar Bible which comes with 2 CD's. I bought it a while back now. I must admit that it's a while since I looked at it but it's a great reference book to just dib in and out of every now and then.
I know it's quite expensive but I have no regrets at spending the money on such a work of love and dedication from Eric.
I do believe a live CD has just been released, I must get that one soon!
Speedy recovery

Like most text books it should be used as a study aid not a novel. a page a day is probably right for study.

Or less

Stu

PS Wonderful book Wonderful author.

£20. Expensive? I don't think so, and that is without even seeing the book!

I was just searching Mudcat for a post I made and saw this. Big Al did you ever buy it? It is very good and worth every penny. Currently my copy is lent out to a friend. Everyone I have ever lent it to has got something (or a lot) out of it

Thirteen years ago. Bloody hell...

ok improving technique, first finger exercises. another is to practise the blues scale in closed positionup and down the neck
next plectrum exercisespractising different combinatiuons of down up , next finger picking, try practising thumb melody using c f g shapes, practiose the c scale using pen strings. finally most guitar books do not make it clear that it is not necessary to play all six strings at once start to learn chord shapes on bottom four middle four and top four this is elementary jazz technique
