Subject: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: GUEST,Penguin Egg Date: 08 Dec 06 - 05:41 AM I love the raw, hard edged and aggressive guitar sound on "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols." I always assumed that the guitar was played by the band's guitarist, Steve Jones. However, someone told me the guitar was by a session musician and that the session musician in question was Chris Spedding. Can anyone enlighten me? |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: GUEST,Brian Peters Date: 08 Dec 06 - 06:10 AM I heard that, too, from a late night Radio 5 phone-in caller who claimed to have been there during the sessions. It always struck me as a little suspicious that Jones, previously a non-musician, could have sounded that good. And it sounds plausible when you compare NMTB with Spedding's previous work, solo and - particularly - with John Cale. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: Dazbo Date: 08 Dec 06 - 06:40 AM Wikipedia says Spedding produced their first demos but nothing about him playing on the album (so it can't be true heehee). Sid Viscious's bass playing was so bad it was apparently overdubbed by Glenn Matlock and Steve Jones (also according to Wikipedia). |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: GUEST,Penguin Egg Date: 08 Dec 06 - 06:56 AM Some little voice in my head says that it must by Spedding playing on the album. Spedding says nothing, except about his work on the demos; but I wouldn't be surprised if Malcolm McLaren didn't put in a silence clause into his contract. It does sound strange that Jones had developed into such a good guitarist so quickly and then went and lost his new found talent, as a live album I heard once recorded shortly before they folded, testifies. Sid Vicious was crap. He had no talent, no nothing, and a junky to boot. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: Big Al Whittle Date: 08 Dec 06 - 07:31 AM One of my friends (whose judgement I respect)was a Pistols fan at the time - saw them three or four times - described them as very tight, with really powerful endings to their songs. A very sharp act. Don't believe anything from journalists. they are paid to give the record company/management line. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: GUEST Date: 08 Dec 06 - 08:19 AM Its fairly well known it was Chris Spedding. He was also in the Wombles. Ten points for anyone who can name the future folkie playing bass inside one of the other Womble suits. |

Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: NormanD Date: 09 Dec 06 - 06:48 AM "Super Womble" was an ace piece of R&B, very early Rollin' Stones if I remember right. So, GUEST, who was the future folkie? There's 10 points at stake here, remember. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: Scrump Date: 09 Dec 06 - 07:18 AM It was Rick Kemp on bass in The Wombles, and Chris Spedding on guitar on the Sex Pistols 'Bollocks' album. Do I get a share int he 10 points GUEST? About time you put us out of our misery! |

Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: GUEST,Penguin Egg Date: 10 Dec 06 - 04:56 AM Braken. The previous thread refers to the bass player on the album. My next thread will be whether or not any of the Sex Pistols played or sang on any of their records. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Dec 06 - 07:23 AM I think Chris played very well considering the furry suit, and long nose hat. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: GUEST,Penguin Egg Date: 10 Dec 06 - 09:03 AM Future trivial pursuits question: Who connects the Wombles with the Sex Pistols. I can just imagine all these punks in the recording booth while Spedding laid down the crunchy guitar tracks while still dressed in his womble suit. |
Subject: RE: Review: Who played guitar on Sex Pistols album From: Cluin Date: 10 Dec 06 - 01:51 PM The studio musicians on The Sex Pistols' albums were actually The Monkees. Strange but true. |
