Sadly Freddie Marsden the drummer with "Gerry and the Pacemakers" died on December 9th. Fans will remember such numbers as "Ferry Cross the Mersey" and "You'll Never Walk Alone".
At peace.

Yes Emma, same goes for me, but not on Merseyside. Gerry and the Pacemakers were one of my favourites at the time.

Gerry's older brother I believe. The group set a new record at the time when their first 3 singles went to number 1 in the UK chart (competing against the Beatles, too). They failed to move with the times as much as some of the other groups from the 'beat' era, and failed to maintain their popularity after about 1966. RIP Freddie.

RIP. I was a kid when the family went to the drive in to see Sink the Bismark and I think it was a double feature with "Ferry Cross the Mersey" playing first. I liked that one about as much as "Hard Days Night". You could hear girls screaming out in the darkness, but not as much as in the theater when the Beatles movie played. They couldn't have been more turned on if the band was right on stage playing live. Crazy times back then. Everybody was full of something and it wanted to come out.

So short a time ago it seems they, and we, were all so young. Where did it all go? I saw them in a pub in Perth (Australia) in about 1971. Like a number of other English bands whose popularity had waned, they came over and toured the pubs. They were good, though some of the others less so. Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders were terrible.

Love Lynne

Agreed on Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders....nasty, really nasty. Speaking of nasty, remember The Troggs?? Gerry amd the Pacemakers always seemed so ..... wholesome? We are all getting old......

I got a Hollies CD a while ago, all their 60s hits. I didn't read the cover carefully enough- they are (or were) still playing, and these were all recent recordings. It sounded like a very poor pub tribute band. I suppose that's what playing the same stuff for 40 years does.

I hate those 're-recordings' CDs - they should be banned! At least some of them tell you in the small print that they are re-recorded 'with at least one original band member' (probably the drummer?) - but some don't and the only way to find out is to buy them and play them, by which time you have already been ripped off :(
