Since its now 2010 and the last posts were 2006 my guess is I'm about 4 yrs younger than most of you- I just turned 63(ugh). In any case, how do I get the cartoon?

Ah, yes, back in the days of Farmer Alfafa and also some of the first Mickey Mouse cartoons. "You give Pancho beeg kiss, no?...heh, heh" or one of my all time favorite scenes: "Where is she?....oh dear, oh dear oh dear...where is she?...oh dear, oh dear, oh dear...where is she?...oh dear, oh dear, oh dear....aww, nuts!"

What a great story, CB! I still hold Ted's view of Disney even though my oldest kid works for Pixar, now owned by the Disney Corp.

"The Sunshine Makers" was directed by Ted Eshbaugh (it's pronounced ESH-bo), an animation pioneer. My father was his accountant and used to tell this story:
Ted didn't make the first animated cartoon but he was the first to make one in color. Whereupon he heard from a young man in California (Ted was based in New York) named Walt Disney.
Why don't we join forces, Walt suggested.
Ted blew him off with a who-needs-you?
And that's why you've never been to Eshbaughland.

I was able to order the DVD. It'll be interesting to see how memory and reality collide after more than 50 years.

Thanks to both of you who made this possible. I can always count on folks like PEACE and ragdall here at Mudcat who can ferret out the most obscure stuff.

That was based on this information:
The Sunshine Makers is available on DVD and VHS at Amazon.com. It is one of 21 old cartoons on "Cartoons That Time Forgot - From the Van Beuren Studio."

"We're happy when we're sad. We're always feelin' bad.
How are ya?
Terrible.
That's fine."

Yup, Peace, that's the one. Now, can anyone help to find a copy of the original cartoon?

'The only talking cartoons I remember from 1949-1950 were on WABD where PAT MEIKLE and BIG BROTHER BOB EMORY shared them, all 3 of them. They were as follows:

1. Happy elves sang "Sunshine, sunshine, I just love the good old golden sunshine" until the mean guys came along and sang "We're happy when we're sad; we're always feeling bad" and squirted black stuff all over everybody and made them sad. The elves struck back and shot bottled sunshine at the bad guys who now sang "We're gonna be happy and gay and never again be gray."'

from here.

Some time in the middle of the 1950s, I remember seeing a cartoon on Saturday morning kids television in New York. It's been a while, now and my memories of it are fading (along with many other memories) but the plot was of a war between the 'happy' people and the 'sad' people.

The sad people sang:
"We're happy when we're sad, ugh!
We're always feeling bad, ugh!"
"How are you?"
"Terrible!"
"That's fine!"
"We're happy when we're sad. ugh!"

Does anyone else remember it?
