Subject: RE: The Beatles have it licked. From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 28 Dec 06 - 03:52 AM beatles were another of the good groups from the 6o's.. shame they are so corporate deified fan glorified demigod arse wank !!! ..The Move were better The Who were better even the f@ckin Archies were better..!!! get perspective.. get a grip!!!! beatles were just another good 60's pop group..!!!!?? |
Subject: RE: The Beatles have it licked. From: Darowyn Date: 28 Dec 06 - 05:53 AM Punkfolkrocker, You were obviously not there at the time. You could not be more wrong. The Beatles started out as a good working band, but long before anyone else, they moved on into an area without which The Move, The Who etc. could never have developed as they did. As for the Archies- you damage your argument by ridiculous exaggeration. You clearly don't know that The Beatles were well outside the corporate mainstream. Brian Epstein was still working in his shop in 1965- I bought a fridge from him! George Martin was given only trivial throwaway assignments, like comedy records at EMI. Now the Archies were purely the product of the big corporations. I don't know why you have this negative attitude- especially when you don't know what you are talking about. Scatalogical language does not constitute critical analysis! Cheers Dave |
Subject: RE: The Beatles have it licked. From: Folk Form # 1 Date: 28 Dec 06 - 06:00 AM I like the Move, but they shadowed the Beatles to such an extent that they were almost a Beatles tribute band. I love your name, punkfolkrocker. I wish I had thought of it. We obvously have similiar tastes - apart from the Beatles. |

Subject: RE: The Beatles have it licked. From: Bernard Date: 28 Dec 06 - 09:08 AM The new album 'Love' is interesting - it proves that George Martin had a far greater creative influence on the Beatles' albums than some people give him credit for. Admittedly he now has digital tools to help him - dropping the key of the guitar part from 'Blackbird' into F to match 'Yesterday' without affecting the speed would have necessitated a re-take with the guitar tuned down a tone at the time. Now he can change the pitch and the speed independantly, and do other tricks as well. People often forget what an innovative genius he was - we have become so reliant on the digital stuff that we can easily fix stuff after the event, which was well nigh impossible at the time. He was a master (probably still is!!) at getting the maximum recording signal on to tape without distortion, which is vital to reduce background noise. Okay, I can remember doing some impressive tricks with tape editing, and drop-ins, etc, but after using the digital techniques I wouldn't go back to analogue! Please don't assume that I'm knocking the 'other four' Beatles - their inventive genius was enhanced by George's, and taken in directions they might otherwise have missed. Things like the Mellotron, eight track recording (virtually pioneered by the Beatles). I've often wondered why they expressed a preference for mono versions of their singles... perhaps it was because of the slightly unnatural 'radiogram stereo' of the earlier records - vocals coming out of one speaker, instruments from the other. It was fashionable at the time, but sounds daft these days! He is one person I have never met, but would dearly love to. |
Subject: RE: The Beatles have it licked. From: KenBrock Date: 28 Dec 06 - 10:22 AM Instead of Pepper for the 1st class rate, it would be better for the 64p rate, as in "When I'm". Please Please Me and With the Beatles should be 1st and 2nd, of course. For the same reason, the US missed a golden opportunity when issuing a Jack Benny stamp years ago. When the 2 ounce rate was 39 cents, his stamp was at the regular rate of 22 cents for a single ounce, iirc. For those too young, he always claimed to be 39 years old in his act. |
Subject: RE: The Beatles have it licked. From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Dec 06 - 12:53 PM Yeah, but we DID do real good when the US Postal Service issued the Timothy Leary Commemorative as an Airmail stamp. If you used it, you could lick it and catch a small trip-out while the letter you put it on would fly there by itself. Spaw |
