Subject: Lyr Req: 'Good Times Outweigh Bad' Lester Flatt
From: Ebbie
Date: 31 Dec 06 - 01:42 AM

Today I was at a mini-concert followed by a slow jam put on by Washingtonian (State) Cliff Perry and Stewart Eric(?) and they sang 'The Good Times Outweigh the Bad" or something to that effect, written by Lester Flatt. I liked it a lot.

I thought I could find it on the Net, him being gone so long, but I have found nothing. Does anyone here know this song?

GOOD THINGS (OUTWEIGH THE BAD) Lyrics
Artist: Flatt and Scruggs
Album: The Fabulous Sound

I've been sittin' here thinkin' back over my life
All of the good things the trouble and strife
Well my share of heartache yes so many I've had
But I still think the good things outweigh the bad

Well I've rocked my babies at night when they cried
I've seen the teardrops turn into smiles
And that's when I realize all the bad luck I've had
And I know all the good things outweigh the bad

Well I never have riches no money to spare
Just a sharecropper's wages is my only fare
Yes makin' my livin' just working the land
But I still think the good things outweigh the bad
Well I've rocked my babies...

Yes I've worked the cotton in the heat of the day
And then paid the landlord nearly all that I made
Well I've seen high water take all that I had
But I still think the good things outweigh the bad
Well I've rocked my babies...

It took a few minutes.

Tried a google of the title you posted (without quotes). That went to the following at the top of the page that opened:

"Folk Music Index - Good O to GowzThere's A Good Time Coming; Songs of the Hutchinson Family , Smithsonian N 020, LP (1978), ... The Good Things (Outweigh the Bad) - Lambert, J./Graves, B. ...
www.ibiblio.org/folkindex/g07.htm - 99k - Cached - Similar pages"

I opened that site and it took me to

'"The Good Things (Outweigh the Bad) - Lambert, J./Graves, B.

I then Googled

The good things outweigh the bad, lyrics      no quotation marks

That led to a page that had the following sites at the top:

I opened one of them and voila, there were your lyrics. And, FYI, I would trade that luckiness you implied was a skill for one tenth your nicetudinous. Happy New Year to you Ebbie.

I can't believe I left that as an adjective. I meant to write the noun 'nicetudinousness'. But I mean all the rest.

LOL. You know, if "the pompitous of love" could make it as a rock lyric, nicetudinous has a chance. Slim, but a chance.

'The Good Things Outweigh The Bad' was also sung by Jimmy Martin. I downloaded it from the now closed Record Lady's All-Time Country site.

Haven't seen nicetudinousness much in print. But, Ebbie, you do embody it.

And I just ran across a word that would be close to it in a dictionary--when nicetudinousness makes it into a dictionary--if we, the people start using it.

Anyway the word I found was "nictitating". As in "A tree frog's nictitating membrane. an extra eyelid, veils the eye without blocking sight."

There are always new words to learn.

And right below it in the online dictionary was "palpebrate"--to wink or blink esp. repeatedly.

You know, like Loretta Lynn sang "I'm gonna tell all you barrroom floozies/ Better get out while you can/ You better take my advice and if you palpebrate more than twice/ You better have something in your eye." Something like that.

I read somewhere that there are 3 million words in the English language. Makes you wonder why "like", "Nomesane" and "Man" are so over used.

Well, good things sometimes do that, but the good things ALWAYS have more calories! That's a given. And if you eat enough of them good things, it's a damn cinch that YOU will soon outweigh both the good and the bad --- and the ugly as well!!!!!!!!!!

I heard Marty Stuart do this on his show a week or so ago....he is dynamite, the song is too.   Any country music fan that is missing out on Marty's RFDTV show should start checking it out. Don't blow it off as "hokey" without watching first. This guy is doing what few others are today...REAL honest-to-goodness COUNTRY MUSIC.
