Traveller's Joy: Songs of English and Scottish Travellers and Gypsies 1965-2005: Compiled by Mike Yates; musical transcriptions by Elaine Bradtke; editorial assistance by David Atkinson and Malcolm Taylor; audio recordings by Mike Yates.

Traveller's Joy is a celebration of the extraordinary and ultimately unique musical legacy of the Gypsies and Travellers of England and Scotland.

The eminent singers and folklorists Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger once wrote that 'the travelling people have become the real custodians of English and Scots traditional song'. No wonder, then, that over the years folk song scholars and collectors have been fascinated by this rich heritage. Mike Yates is no exception and has met and recorded many fine singers from the travelling people of England and Scotland. Examples from their repertoires are presented here.

Traveller's Joy is first and foremost a songbook – a collection of over fifty songs to be learned, sung, and enjoyed by the reader. It is not meant to be a scholarly dissertation, though the intention is to portray the singers and their music with honesty and sensitivity. To enhance and complement the texts and musical transcriptions, an accompanying twenty-track CD allows the reader to hear some of the performers themselves. In addition, there is an authoritative introductory essay by Mike Yates, along with biographical sketches of the singers, notes on the songs, photographs of the singers and of travelling life, and a bibliography and discography.

Sounds like a great book. Rod Stradling reviews it at the excellent on line musical traditions magazine; www.mustrad.org.uk.

Hey, Dick Greenhaus, will Camsco be getting this? If so, how much. I'm interested. Would someone please list the songs included in this book? Thanks.

Excellent! I'll be aiming to buy this one most probably. I've seen Duncan Williamson perform several times, and had the pleasure of telling him some stories at a festival. He is one of my favourite performers; he is a superb host at a ceilidh. Sadly his health hasn't been so good during the last year or so and I believe he is largely housebound now. Yep, this CD will be going on my to-buy list.

That list appears to be partial as there should be over 50 songs and the list on Desert Dancer's post is only 20. Does anyone know the rest?

The list on Rod Stradling's review is of the CD tracks.

I've not seen a list of the book contents but if it's still needed on the 24th when I get back from my travels I'll make one from my copy and post it.

CAMSCO's policy on books is simple: if enough (say a half-dozen or more) folks want a book, I'll order it in, get my wholesaler's discount and split the difference between my cost and the retail price with purchasers. This is generally a one-shot deal--I'm not really set up to inventory books. If you're innarested, PM or E-mail me (dick@camscomusic.com); I'll get back to you with price and availability. I can usually offer 20% off list.
