The Barley Mow, Bonsall, Derbyshire, Friday night.
Authentic old country pub.
Starts late 9.30-10 ish but nice clientele and landlady. 4 steep steps for access. Just one long room - players at one end. the non players quite respectful of whats going on.
welcoming session hosts.
supportive friendly audience.
PM Paul Burke for more details.
Abbots ale. Mulled Wine. Hot coffee. some decent scotches.

Hi Al, I've heard about this sesh from a non-musician mate who reckons it is a great night out, and I keep promising I'll go. I promise to make an effort to get down from the Former People's Republic of Humberside some time.

Hope this thread makes 300+!

The Wilkes Head, St Edwards St, Leek. Monday nights, starts around 9.30, finishes at daft o'clock, or when Malcolm the landlord (who plays in the session) wants to go to bed. Very eclectic, I've heard everything from reels to bluegrass to pop to Hendrix over the years. Strictly acoustic. Great beer and good crack.

I'm sure if you wanted to sing something else at our session, members would be politely kind.
It is handicap accessible and they would probably try to provide any drink you order.

in Chico in northern california
we get together on the first saturday
at the Upper Crust bakery from 2-5 pm
130 main street, down town
yesterday's session had a great turn out
with players from 12-90 years old and a great
variety of instruments from guitars (there were many)
to mandolins, fiddles, banjos, accordions,
and even a french horn and jaw harp and lagerphone

or perhaps since the local brewery is sierra nevada
the name should be sierra phone...

The Butte Folk Music Society hosts this monthly jam and also
produces occasional concerts in homes and venues in Chico area.
We also have an annual camp out in june,...stay tuned for details.

If you want a really good nosh - no charge for the food. Admission is £2 for non singers £1 for singers. then the Vernon Arms, Spondon, Derby - tuesday nights. On busy nights the food (a selection of chips, mini pasties, lasagne, bread and butter, mushy peas, sausages etc) never runs out but you have to get in the queue for it - no use hunting round for scraps by the time the second half starts!

Special guests, Irish duo No Fixed Abode (previewing their new album) this week, so floorsingers will only get one song each.

Fantastic club - club rather a session - everybody comfortable with that distinction....?

Wichita Kansas:
Java Nation on Mondays, Irish session in local coffeehouse, handicap accessible, great breves. All kinds of instruments--mando, tenor banjo, lap dulcimer, fiddle. All kinds of musicians, mostly very good. 7:00 PM to 9:00. Nice folks, nice music. Buy your own food and coffee drinks. No booze.

Java Villa on Thursdays, same description. Mostly same players, even a lot of the same audience.

There are doubtless many more that I don't know about. Am looking for a bluegrass/country jam closer than the Emma Chase Cafe (abt. 75 miles from home).

Crown Inn, Manfield, Nr. Darlington, UK

3rd Sunday of month 1.30pm start. Finish somewhere between 4.00 and 5.00pm.

Easy going session not too quick with varied repertoire. Mostly tunes, but occasional singing. Friendly atmosphere.

Next one should be 21 Jan. I usually get an email flyer, so will post again nearer the time.

The Press Room, Portsmouth, NH -- Friday evening from 4:30 to 9:00 PM, since c. 1983. This is a mixed session of traditional songs and instrumentals from all genres. which has been   attended by many Mudcatters.

The first hour or so tends to go back and forth, the middle leans towards tunes, and the end is more singing. It is almost always a full house of musicians, but we now have a special place for guests. It might be a good idea to PM if planning to attend.

Food and drink at moderate price, all very good.

There's also a shanty / forebitter session on the third Saturday of each month from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

Looking forward to seeing more of you -- Tom   Hall

How about having a mod rename it- something like 'Sessions Near You', perhaps. I think having a standing thread available would come in handy.

Glad you enjoyed it WLD, sorry I was a touch drop taken (well, not sorry really). If you want a drink next time, there's a bed available if you're prepared to slum it.

Don't forget the Folk Map, which sadly only applies to UK users (so far).

While on hols in the Lake District over New Year we created our own session at The Prince of Wales, Foxfield. The pub brews its own beer, and charges next to nothing for it, and they serve the most amazing pasties.
There is a regular session there, but I don't have any details to hand.

Just received an email with dates for the next three months at the Crown, Manfield.

Crown Inn, Manfield, Nr. Darlington.

21 January, 18 February & 25 March (March moved to 4th Sunday to avoid a clash with another event)

All 1:30pm Start.

I agree with WLD & Ebbie. I think this could usefully be made a Permathread with a suitable change of title.

I am very pleased to tell you that after years of being in the cold dark place of "session - less" we have just managed to get a session going in Retford, Nottinghamshire. The second Sunday of the month at The Packet Inn off Grove Street at 8.00 pm. This Thursday will be our third time, so you can see we are quite new at things, but we are very friendly and would love to welcome regulars or visitors to the area. Mainly session, but not averse to the odd singer - as long as they are not too odd!!

WoW, love that folk map, I wish we had one like it here in the US.
Well, I went to the Press Room (Portsmouth, NH) last Friday evening (see curmudgeon's post above) & told my daughter's best friends mother about it. I don't see her often, hardly at all & I've known her before our daughters were born, she's more of a dancer so are paths don't cross much but they used to & they did Thursday night & I told her about the session. Turns out she's now working in Portsmouth & her roommate plays a melodeon, quite well too. So the next nite they showed up & were quite shy about being there. Kim (her Welsh roommate) picked up on a couple of tunes she knew & that was that. I was very pleased how warmly they were received. Both being dancers Kim played while Debbie did a Scottish country dance, which doesn't happen much there but they were still applauded (I don't know if it was polite kindness though). The session as Tom has mentioned above is mixed, that goes for the singing too. There's a lot of singing of traditional songs & a bit of the modern too, shanties, Irish, Scottish & English songs along with the occasional bluegrass songs, cowboy, blues, 60's folk, leaning more towards chorus stuff.
Mostly though it's welcoming, everyone gets to sing or play & I guess dance too. Very light hearted & easy going so it's as enjoyable for the folks that come who don't sing or play or dance. If you're a stranger & it's noticed that you're singing along you'll probably be asked, discretely if you'd like to sing something.
Maybe next time Debbie will feel comfortable enough to give us a song she was a bit to shy this time around.

Barry
