Subject: Mandela (?)
From: bottarel@ipruniv.cce.unipr.it

I'd like to know the lyrics of a song which apparently tells about apartheid and rebels in South Africa. This song is sung by DeDannan in the album "Jacket of batteries".

As my english's knowledge is not good, I can only understand the beginning:

Beside the creek the lion speak/The river flood and spread the blood/ CHORUS: Mandela is the one...

Thank You

Ezio, Italy

Well, I found out the song was written by Colclough - that's a start...

I can't find them on the web, but I've got a tape of "Jacket of batteries" somewhere.

I'll try to find it and transcribe them in the next couple of days

Mind you as the request was from 97, will Ezio still want them?

Ed

This is a very old request, but the original appears to have given an email address in the "From" line.

If you think you have a good lead, you might send a quicky to ask if it's still a live search. If it's not still open, ask if the originator would like to post his results(?)

Even if he's not still interested, someone else might be; but there are just too many good songs waiting to be found for us to chase a lot of dead ends.

John

I'd say if you can post it, please do. Maybe Ezio found the lyrics long ago, or maybe he's no longer interested, but like John said, there's a chance someone else might be interested down the road. Your choice.

Joe, I'll bet the Colclough who wrote the song is Phil, who also wrote Song for Ireland.

I sometimes wonder what happened to Ezio. He was a good soul. Has anybody heard from him? If anybody is in contact with him, tell him hello for me.

John, I think it's usually good to come up with answers to song requests, no matter how old they are. There's a satisfaction in answering the challenge - and it adds another song to our collection (I'm not so enthusiastic about answering pop song requests, of course).

Something makes me think I've heard Johnny Clegg sing this, but that's just a guess from an again and feeble brain....

I'll post them when I can,

Having just moved house and being surrounded by unsorted boxes, locating the tape might take a while

I'd appreciate that, Ed. I tried last night, but it is too hard for me.

Beside the creeks the lion speaks
and the rain falls...
the rivers' flood do spread the blood
they do enlarge the stain.
(like ballds?) raindrops travel
hear the talking drum (?)
across the land a voice is heard:
Mandela is the one.

Next verse aboutSteve Biko, third verse about ...zulu(?), last verse as first about all three.

I can do a tiny bit better than above, but nor much.

Wolfgang

I found it now on the web: here (lyrics for 'jacket of batteries')

Wolfgang

MANDELA
(Words and music Phil and June Colclough)

Beside the creeks the lion speaks,
And the rain falls iron rain.
The rivers flood to spread the blood,
They do enlarge the stain.
Like bullets raindrops travel,
To hit the taking drum,
Across the land a voice is heard,
Mandela is the one.
Mandela, Mandela, Mandela,
Mandela, Mandela,
Mandela is the one.

Along the shores the lion roars,
And the wind blows blazing wind.
The grass is stirred to spread the work,
She makes the tall trees sing.
Like tempests storm winds gather,
Flaming spears they come.
Across the land a voice is heard,
Steve Biko is the one.
Steve Biko, Steve Biko, Steve Biko,
Steve Biko, Steve Biko,
Steve Biko is the one.

Beneath the sun the lions run,
No cage shall hold their rage.
As they draw near the word is clear,
And printed on the page.
The night is filled with voices,
Whispered like the sun.
Across the land a voice is heard,
Sisulu is the one.
Sisulu, Sisulu, Sisulu,
Sisulu, Sisulu,
Sisulu, is the one.

Beside the creeks the lion speaks,
And the rain falls iron rain.
The rivers flood to spread the blood,
They do enlarge the stain.
Like bullets raindrops travel,
To hit the taking drum,
Across the land a voice is heard,
Mandela is the one.
Mandela, Mandela, Mandela,
Mandela, Mandela,
Steve Biko, Sisulu,
Mandela is the one.
