Hello Chris
I'm so sorry to hear of your Uncle's passing. He got in touch with me a few years ago about his dialect writing in general as I have an interest in Lancashire dialect and we had a few emails pass between us over various things. Another song of his that was a great favourite was "Awterations" about how pubs have changed over the years and there was a verse in it that someone sang that Ernie didn't write and I asked him if he knew anything about it which I don't think he did so he was interested to hear it. I was thinking of getting in touch with him again to see if he would be interested in the Lancashire Society which has recently been formed to record and preserve the dialect and other aspects of Lancashire life but sadly that is not to be now.

Mark

Very kind. I'll have a bit of that. Google keeps asking me, do you
mean? in what I imagine is a really patronising voice....

Not the one you're looking for. Couldn't find the lyrics, but it is available on the 'net as an i-tune.

"Ow Do" by Ernest Ford

Ow do I said to this owd chap
Ow do he sed un raised his cap
Neaw who tha are I've nor a clue
But any road, ow do!

Ow do, agen I sed up t' road
To a ragbone mon sat on his load
Wilt stop awhile afore climbing t' brew
Ut least for t' se, ow do!

Ow do, he sed I'm fain t' see thee
Con t' gi uz a push I've hurt mi knee
Un on top o' that hers thrown a shoe
Aye, I'm fain for t' se, ow do!

Ow do, I strained eawt out, ow do
Uz him un t' load I pushed up brew
I met a farmer havin trouble too
BUT I NEVER SED, OW DO!

Many thanks. I'll give it a couple of days and then order a copy. It's only eight quid, after all.

No, but it was recorded by the Houghton Weavers on their 1976 album Howfen Wakes (now available on CD). If you can't get the words any other way, you could get a copy and trancsribe the words from that.

Does anyone have a copy of the lyrics for the Ernest Ford song above, or know where one can be found?
