Subject: Lyr Req: Dublin song - Liberty Boy
From: GUEST,Derek
Date: 17 Jan 07 - 07:36 AM

Hello to all. Love this site. Has the lyrics of songs i never thought i could get. But there's one song, i think its called Liberty Boy, which i would love to get the lyrics to.
It starts something like: 'I was born and raised in a darling spot...'. If anyone could help me out with the lyrics and chords i would be extremely grateful.
Cheers all and, once again, great site

Irish comedian/singer Brendan Grace recorded it - it may be available on CD, in which case you could get the CD and transcribe the words.

His website is at http://www.brendangrace.irl.com, but I couldn't find the song on any of the currently available CDs (I should check though, I only had a quick look).

Hello,

Interested to see this correspondence. As I understand it, the lyrics were written by my late grandfather, Edward Nevin (1910-1997). He was born and bred in the Liberties (Ardee Street). I have neither the lyrics nor the music for this but I think it might feature on a Brendan Grace LP called "His Grace in Dublin" or something like that. Wasn't it a single also?

Dublin city ramblers singing sailing home.. Lyrics

I'm a liberty boy; that I'll never deny
And I love the old town I was born in
And I rue the day that I sailed away
On a grey November morning

Me love shed a tear as she stood by the pier
But I told her I had to be going
She's my treasure and pearl
She's my old darling girl
But my wild oats I have to be sowing

CHORUS: I'm sailing home to Dublin city
To the one who's waiting for me there
Home again to Dublin city
Oh, how I'm longing to be there

I've seen all the sights of this great world's delights
And I've sailed from Vancouver to Dover
I've hunted the whale and weathered the gale
Now my roving days are all over

For I miss Moore Street smell and the auld Liffey swell
And the pigeon-house lights in the evening
On Sandymount strand where we walked hand in hand
And we watched while the mail boat was leaving. CHORUS TWICE

The link above that was referred to as Brendan Grace's web site is now a dead link.

However, Brendan now owns a pub in Killaloe, Co Clare, known as Brendan Grace's Bar & Restaurant. I couldn't find anything about his music there, though.

Hi Guest

Who recorded the single?
If you could transcribe the words and put them here in this thread then the single would be of great value to us Mudcatters.

Regard

Fergus

My Grandad sings it like this:

I was born and bred in a darling spot, famed in history
Tis the auldest part of Dublin they call the liberty
Now i'm very proud to come from there i'll wave me banner high
Sure i'll drink all night and be polite
A liberty boy am i

Now me ma me pa called me Jamesy just like my uncle Jim
He was known throughout the provinces by the women and the men
Now an Irish casanova with a twinkle in his eye
Sure i'll drink all night and be polite
A liberty boy am i

That is all i know, and to be honest my grandad is known for getting lyrics wrong, he also drinks all night.

The Complete Words for "A Liberty Boy Am I"

A LIBERTY BOY AM I
(Edward Nevin)

I was born and bred in a darlin' spot, well famed in history
In the oldest part of Dublin and it's called the Liberties
I'm really proud to come from there, I'll keep the banner high

I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I

Now me Ma and Da got an awful fright, the night that I was born
I came a little early for I wasn't due till morn
Me Da he nearly fainted when he heard me lusty cry

I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I
I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I

There and then they called me Jamesie just like me Uncle Jem
He was loved throughout the Liberties by the women and the men
He taught me all the things I know that money couldn't buy

I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I

Now me school days they were happy ones I'm very glad to say
How I loved to play in Patrick's Park, I went there every day
I loved to stroll round Christ Church place and watch the Mott's go by

I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I
I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I

I began to notice Ladies when I was in me teens
A one and one in Burdocks and I'd take her to the Queens
A Dublin Casanova with a twinkle in me eye

I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I

And now you've heard the story of how Jamesie came to be
And of that darlin' Neighbourhood that's called the Liberties
I'm a Dubliner and proud of it, with that I'll say goodbye

I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I
I will drink all night and be polite a Liberty Boy am I

Dear ALL,

As one of the grand daughters of Edward Nevin, I know he would be very honoured to know that you have so much interest in the song that he wrote back in the seventies. He was a man who was born in the heart of the liberties (1910)and was really proud of it. He passed away in 1997 but is remembered very fondly by us all. I am very proud to be related to such a fine and kind man and hope that his song will continue to be remembered so fondly. Last night Brendan Grace was a guest on the Ryan Tubridy show and they showed a clip of him singing the Liberty Boy. I can tell you it brought back some very happy memories of my grandfather Edward.

Thank you all for your very kind word about his song.

His grand daughter Niamh

The paintwork is peeling, there's damp on the ceiling
The rats they are squealing, this tenements freezing
Your da's not been paid, the strike calls been made
Sleep now my Liberty boy, sleep now my Liberty boy

Chorus

Oh your Da's on the picket line fighting for better time
Larkins been taken the strikes nearly breaking

"................

Sadly all I remember, I know it recalls the great strike of 1930 in Dublin, of which Philip Larkin fought for better working conditions.
