This morning at 8:50, public radio station KALW, 91.7 FM, will run a 4-minute piece on the Hyde Street Pier chantey sing, on the morning arts calendar program "Artery." It was taped at a sing last Spring. If you miss it or are out of the area, it will be archived at www.kalw.com.

Cheers,

Chanteyranger

The story went great! The reporter, Steven Short, did a fine job of getting it right. Mudcatter Melani was interviewed, and Radriano's voice, in fine form, was heard singing part of a verse of, I think the title is, "Maid of Australia" (Please correct, Radriano if title is different). Archie Green was also interviewed, at a different time and location, but weaved seamlessly into the story. I was also interviewed as I'm the ranger who hosts the sings.

I was able to listen to an archive of the very well done story.

Yeah, chanteyranger, that was "Maid of Australia" I was singing. Too bad they missed all the naughty bits of the song.

Very nice... could have done without all the "what's wrong with
how they're sung today pontification from Mr. Green, especially
in a five-minute overview (which by the way, did feature a
chantey at work demo clip), but in all a very positive piece.

I first heard about the SF Chantey Sings on KKUP, around 1986
BTW.

I think they must have tweaked my voice somehow--I don't usually sound that good when recorded! CR sounded great as usual--he's an old radio hand. Sorry they missed all the naughty bits in "Maid of Australia"--I thought it was very funny that they picked that one. And that was yrlancslad on "Billy Riley."

As for the pontifical Mr. Green--I have sung chanteys while crewing on both squareriggers and schooners, as well as while rowing. The tempo is often either faster OR slower than when the same song is sung for fun, depending on the job. And the song.
