Thanks Tony Leonard

We thoroughly enjoyed tis event last year.
Met loadsa great folks and folkies.
Staithes is small and beautiful the music was fabulous and the organiser completely of his trolley.
No seriously Tony and his mates are a real pleasure to know.
Even if you cant bear camping or cant make the full weekend drop in for some fun and music.
We are promised even more chances to sing and play this year with the posibility of seperate singers sessions etc.
As the man says he just wants everyone to come along enjoy and want to come back next time.
So any ideas you have for improvemnet he will take on board.

Re F&C we enjoyed ours in the little place down at the sea front.
Being from Grimsby we are a bit spoiled for choic round here and the ones nearest the camp site were alittle disappointing the day we tried them.
It is a great weekend if you like your music unplugged and in great variety.
There were a good few "Proper" singers and everyone was really kind and generous with advice and nice comments to us lesser types who are trying to learn to play and sing.
Actualy I cant imagine that there could be a nicer bunch of folkies all in one place.
Oh except at Faldingworth live or Gainsbro FC or actualy we always seem to meet nice folkies at all the clubs we visit.
SO Staithes is a good chance to spend longer getting to know people.
We heard some fantastic music though it is such a thrill to be allowed to play in same venue as people You would expect to be doing gigs of there own.

See you there at some point as I too enjoyed last year. Lynne and I were up in Staithes a few weeks ago walking and wondered whether it would be on again especially as the pub at the bottom of the village had changed hands

Maggie Gee told me about this, and it sounds great. Eileen & I would certainly come over but it clashes with the Silsden Bluegrass Weekend.
Please, as the Irish say, take the thought for the deed, we can't be two places at once.

Sorry V its in errrr(goes to top of thread cos cant remember)July.
It is a great weekend.
And is a great mixture of styles and tallents.
There must be something for everyone somewhere going on.
Carol has there been any more info re seperate sessions for you proper singers?
I thought it sounded like a good idea until I realised there may be several great things on at once in different locations and I am a right clutz when it comes to being that organised.
I hope we are not gonna miss a real proper singing sing around.
Or that at least you will join in the general sing around as well.
It is ages since we heard you perform.

tonyleonard@tiscali.co.uk

I dont think Tony has a web site for this event.
If there is one for the Loftus fc you may find details there.
If the format is the same or similar to last year
yOu come along to play and or listen session in one or two pubs in the Am.
Lunch sessions in pubs in afternoons
Tea time
Evening sessions
Kicking out time at pubs
Into the early hours with sessions in large hut on camp site.
There were no booked acts last year and I assume same this year from info at top of thread.
you need stamina and to be willing to enjoy yourselves and meet new people
It is brilliant.
How the devil is the lovely Maggie Gee?
She is such a nice lady and was one of the ones who made u feel so welcome last year.

Sounds great. Lots of playing and singing appeals to me.

I don't live too far away so should be able to get along to some of the sessions, but not all (family and all that - July 19th is my wedding anniversary!) so knowing what is on when would be useful.

I have put this in my tracer so I can pick it up nearer the time and can email Tony for more info.

Hi Carol...long time no see, hope you are well. Think the last time we met was at Brandy Wharf last year. I would certainly enjoy it if the weather is good, but getting a bit past the 'tenting in the rain' thing I guess. Like to feel comortable these days.
Do love singarounds though, although have not been taking part much lately......might resurrect a few of the what are now oldies that I used to sing and see if I can remember the words.
Best wishes, Mike.,

Hi Mike apparently bunk house accomodation is also available!
Plus coffee/tea available from our campervan! We had fabulous weather last year so keeping my fingers crossed for this year.

The venue is none smoking and the beer wasnt bad.
The company is of a high calliber and the singing is all great as you can surmise by the fact that Carol will be there too make it great again.
(oooh me knees are gonna be so sore)
It is a lovely place to spend a few days and the listening is good.

Hope the weather is very good for you and that the balaclave is not needed.
If it is nippy over there perhaps you may take the risk of being thought french onboard, and wear socks with your sandals.
Myself I would choose sensible shoes and hope for finer weather later in the week.

There was a jazz band last year.
But I think it is a resident band at one of the pubs rather than specialy for the folkies!
My Mrs will be going as well as a ton of people who are,it seems not participants on the excellent mudcat.
Although It would be brilliant to sit listening to Carol all the time I am afraid she will be much interupted by many other great performers.
And us!
I didnt catch the Jazz band as was at another venue taking part in a mixed session singaround.
Can we hope you will be going to make a third?

Hey steady on Carol !
I mean its ok to put up with non Catters who are already there.
No one can blame you for that.
But its a bit much coming out and admiting you actualy have freinds who are'nt like us.
I mean dont get me wrong, some of my best freinds are, well not even musicians(gulp!) but both They and myself are happier when they know their place.
It doesnt do to let them get too familiar.

Tim

I presume that when the singaround gets to your spot you will hand it to Carol (whoever she is) to sing another as you are so enthralled by her. Pity your enjoyment was marred by us NON 'proper' singers (whatever a proper singer is).

Better still, why not book her for a private singaround and let the rest of us enjoy a mixture of styles. Thats the idea behind Staithes weekend.

Tut tut tut!
I well maybe you could point out were exactly I posted any such thing
about the rest of the performers at the last staithes do.
I expect youhave just misunderstood my meaning at some point.
Maybe were feeling a little bored and neglected or ran out of your medication unexpectedly.
If however you were a performer at last years I do thank you for your most enjoyable contribution,as we enjoyed everything on that occasion and I hope you are feeling better by the time the next one gets here.
Meanwhile thank you for helping to keep this thread so well up in the list.

Tim - quotes from your posts
'Carol is of course a huge bonus to hear at any event'

'There are proper folkies like Carol'

'Carol has there been any more info re seperate sessions for you proper singers?'

'Hi Carol really looking forward to hearing you and the other singers again.
Take care of that voice'

'the singing is all great as you can surmise by the fact that Carol will be there too make it great again'

'Although It would be brilliant to sit listening to Carol all the time I am afraid she will be much interupted by many other great performers'

Yes I was there & enjoyed lots of nice friendly people - there was no 'super star' guests & although Carol may be a wonderful singer she obviously did not stand out as requiring special attention - despite your 'toadying'. I have spoken to lots of people who were there and no-one knows who you are talking/raving about. Giving some performers 'Elite' status detracts from the FOLK who make this sort of festival worth attending!
My apologies to Carol as no offence is intended.
As to your insults about medication ..........sad, sad, sad!
(Carol - beware stalkers)

I think it is a huge shame that you choose to attack the two people who have taken the time and trouble to keep this great musical event in the list of threads so that others may see it and decide to come along to have a good time.
Still you are entitled to your opinion I guess I will look forward to meeting you there.

If you do go listen and like what you hear, get in touch and we will see about gettin some posted out to you.
They are £5 a go and worth a listen.

Never mentioned you saying anything detrimental about anyone else - just that you keep on raving about Carol when there were many artists who were really, really excellent. As I said, NO-ONE was head and shoulders above the rest which is what made the week-end great. My name doesnt come in to the equation as I don't want you raving about how good/bad I was. Lets talk about the weekend and leave it at that.

"Pity your enjoyment was marred by us NON 'proper' singers (whatever a proper singer is)."
One who has the guts to use a name when picking an arguement?
Also it is very difficult to maintain a dialogue on here with any one except those who can be arsed to join in.
Welcome as you have now found the time and inclination.
I enjoyed all the music and singing that I managed to hear in the pubs,in the street,in our tent and in the hut later on.
Met loads of great folks and enjoyed the comments re my own efforts as they were mostly kind and generous.
I enjoyed being allowed to get me bodrhan out and join in a bit with the Guys from the Twa Dogs .
Had the priviledge of a guitar lesson from Dave who played a Davy Graham classic beautifully.
Laughed till I ached thanks to Mr Leonard and his funnies.
Bought cds and still play them when I get the chance.
Learned how to play with two fingers with another great bloke who I think was called Martin.
Met a lady Bass player who made us welcome among her many friends.
(and let us play at a club she MCs in Stokesly and Guisbro on other occassions)
Heard Ian and his lovely Lowdon box for the first time.
some great whistle playing, fantastic dialect songs and generally had a whale of a time.
Carol sang some great songs as did many others who I never learned the names of.
But then I didnt have the priviledge of hearing them again yet as we did with Carol.
The late nigths /early mornings in the hut were brilliant and the weather was mostly excellent.
I hope to have as much fun this year too.
As I am sure the rest of the attendees will too.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Any chance of you telling us what a 'proper' singer is.After all, you introduced the term not me.

Why does it take 'guts' to have a debate?

Are you now making threats to my personal safety?

I remarked on your obsession with one performer and you have consistently come back with insults. Sadly , this attitude is becoming common on mudcat lately.

Still, I'm probably not a 'proper' singer like Martin, Maggie, Sean, Mary, Dennis etc. etc. (Oops, and CAROL)

"Non proper singer".....you really do seem to have missed the point.
By referring to "proper" singers Tim is being a litle over modest and self-effacing about his own talents as a singer/songwriter. His comments to Carol are just banter among friends. Hope you get a chance to meet Tim at Staithes and realise what a nice ,easy going fellow he is.

Old Git - - - I think its you have missed the point!

I have heard & sung with Tim!

I also thought he was a nice easy going guy but HE is the one throwing insults not me.

My point is that there were NO SUPERSTARS at the festival. Tim was not 'the best', Carol (?) was not 'the best, I was not 'the best'.

It is not a competition but a friendly singaround.
That is Tonys aim & he has hit it spot on.
To have someone (anyone) to keep harping on about 1 performer in this thread is IMO not in the spirit of this weekend.

I still would like a definition of 'proper' singers!

Time to draw a line under any negative issues already aired. As i am crap with computers i asked Tim to put this on mudcat. Thanks Tim for starting it and to all the other contributors, I am graetful for the input every one has made to this event. Might be a good idea to focus on the positve issues mentioned, like.......every one makes a contributoin to the success of this event. It was always my intention to make ALL types of accoustic music welcome. There have been a few cock ups like the landlord of the captain Cook booking the Jazz band. All concerned agreed that it did'nt work and wont be repeated. The strength of this event is people come and enjoy the whole thing ...music....walking....drinking.. camping...swapping songs...and it's free. Thats what we will cocentrate on. If any body has ideas to improve any aspect of this event, lets hear them. There is no formal structure so we can make what ever changes the participants want.
Cheers Tony

I never said any were the best did I?
I was conversing with Carol who was about the only one who actualy showed any interest in going or in getting the thread somewhere near the top 500 in the list of threads on mudcat.
I dont owe anyone any explanations.
I dont usualy enter into debates with anonymouse guests unless I actually know who they are.
And I like to tell those whose music/singing/playing/performance
I have experienced that I have enjoyed it and that is the case with Carol who is a nice person, whom I have met a couple of times, and who sang some great songs.
Carol is a "Proper Singer" because she sings a song with feeling and commitment,in a style that reflects the period and history of the song and unaccompanied.
This seems, from my brief sojourn into the world of the folky to be what is accepted as being a proper singer.
That is my opinion.
If that in some way is threatening to your veiw of the world then I am very sorry.
Its a shame you are not going to contribute further to this thread as one of the few attendees who has bothered to post.
And it would be nice to read one from you that I didnt find insulting, that was about the event, was not toadying up to Tony,or name dropping re who you have played with.
Hopefully we will meet at Staithes and beer will resolve the discord.
My Name is Tim Leaning I am in Grimsby and I say "If you want to hear and play musc among others of the same bent go to Staithes and hav ea really good time.

Tony,
You do have a computer!
You know, I enjoyed your songs so much the first time we went to Staithes?
You really have organised a brilliant event.
The music is superb all round. People of any level of ability and playing any style of accoustic music, are made to feel welcome. And that they contribute equally
I think we are all stars on the day.
It is great that although you and your mates do all the work organisng and sorting it out for us.
We all can come along and feel we were a part of it,not just the faceless nameless ones who go to make up the statistics for attendance at other types of events.
Luckily there is none of the feeling you get some places were the locals sort of like the idea of people coming as long as they know their place and dont presume to be as important as the regulars are.
You know re the jazz band,as long as there are alternatives for those not enamoured of the artform it is quite a nice touch as it reflects the tastes and sensibilities of the landlord and possibly his regular customers.
Well done Tony and thank you so much.
You are lovely.

We have a gig in York on Friday and are then off to a birthday party in a castle in Northumberland but might manage to detour on the way back for Sunday lunchtime if things will still be happening.

I had a very enjoyable evening last year sitting in the pub on the harbour singing and playing with a most agreeable bunch of people so it would be good to do it again. Only sad that I won't make it on the busier times.

But it is a really great long weekend in a lovely location with loads of people all having a good time.
It really is worth it.
In fact apart from spending the same amount of time, doing the same thing, getting just as drunk and then having a whole load of really attractive persons of you own personal favourite gender wanting to make you really extra happy(and your partner being ok with it)
I cant think of a better way to spend a long weekend.
(NOt just at the Moment anyhow)
There was some really nice Banjo playing went on there last year.
(Not that all the other instruments that were played, were played in any way less profficiently and not that there needs to be an instrument of any kind involved to provide some fine music,or poetry or mime(?)
Or that the human voice is not to be counted as an instrument.)
But In my own personal opinion I found it to be very enjoyable.

It is such a good time mate.
YOu hear Folk,blues,Country,americana(?)bluegrass,original stuff,Irish
a bit of rock loads of humour and lots of other stuff!
(All exponents of accoustic music take it a as read you are welcome)
YOu get a good natured banter and loads of supportive people around willing you to do well, and listening intently.
Teh beer last year was a good price at the Top pub not bad at the bottom either.
And as well as the pub sessiona morning, afternoon and night,a large hall is available through the night and the music just goes on.
There are people around who have been playing for decades and newbees like us(I mean me and the boss).I asked peopel last year to show me how to play a little better and got some great close up veiws af really good players in action.
no one minded at all
all the venues are none smoking.
If you cant tell by now
I quite liked it last year.

Thers not much time but you should be able to sort the first verse out .......Any one else care to join in??

Kind friends and companions come join me in rhyme

And lift up your voices in chorus with mine

We'll sing and be merry, all grief to refrain

For we may or might never all meet here again

Chorus

Oh here's the health, to the company and to my lass

Lets drink and be merry all out of one glass

Let's drink and be merry, all grief to refrain

For we may or might never all meet here again

I am hoping to get over at some point during the weekend. My family lived at Staithes for hundreds of years and made their living from the sea. Some of the songs I have written take history and attachment to the sea as their themes I also feel a strong affinity to Staithes after visiting regularly as a young child when family still lived there. I often fished out of Staithes also which was a great feeling especially given my family history is so closely tied to Staithes and the sea.
I look forward to spending some time sharing songs as I did last year cant wait

Sorry, I'll be at Saddleworth Folk Festival this weekend as well.
Had seriously considered coming to Staithes but was seriously put off by comments Tim the Twangler made on Mudcat on the "10th Saddleworth" thread (17 July).
It's no good having someone that supposedly acts as a spokesperson and representative of Staithes Music weekend going onto other threads and slagging off other folk festivals.
I am sure that the Staithes weekend is a brilliant weekend and I was very tempted to come to it but Tim has done you a disservice by disrespecting Saddleworth folk goers.
He says I 'misunderstood' him and that his comments were only meant to be 'irony, humour and banter'but I don't think so.
It could be that his mouth runneth over without considering the implications of what he is saying. In which case I do apologise to him. But if he is truly a representative and official spokesperson of Staithes Music weekend he really must be careful about what he says and try to stop antagonising people.
He's even managed to do this on this thread!
Sorry to bring a negative tone to this thread but I think it had to be said.
I sincerely wish you all a fantastic weekend and in the spirit of all us folkies that seek peace and harmony, god bless you all.

I do feel however that some people who read these threads are a bit strange or overly sensitive and just as opinionated as I am accused of being;
But hey thats life innit and if we were all the same it would be a much less interesting world.

Unfortunately this happens when people don't know how to use Mudcat.

They don't realise that when the thread disappears it hasn't been obliterated but is waiting to be refreshed.
If only they would set the filter box to 3 days or one week or one year etc and search, then they would find that everything that has ever been written about Staithes is still there.

Steers Music Fest was mostly ok but was hijacked by geordie "proper singers" with their dullsville historic ditties. The Jazz was cool and if you are a real live music fan, genres are irrelevant. Warbling on about old stuff in an accent only intelligable to Gazza or Bobby Thompson doesn't pass for music to the majority although I concede it does form an essential part of a great weekend but 2011 saw far too much unaccompanied drivel.
Aretha, Dionne,Sam Cooke - now they're PROPER SINGERS
