Subject: Scottish Mudgather Octoberish 2007?
From: John MacKenzie
Date: 07 Feb 07 - 12:01 PM

Who would be interested in coming up to the highlands for a wee Mudgather at the back end of this year?

It would hopefully be held in a wee hotel between Lairg and Bonar Bridge, there is a station close by, and also a fabulous Youth Hostel called Carbisdale Castle. It's a 60 mile drive from Inverness Airport.

I was thinking in terms of late October [after the Getaway] or early November, at a time where it wouldn't clash with any festival weekends.

Giok

October is better as there is a half term break then, which makes it easier travelling.

Bearing in mind just how many Mudcatters have their birthdays in October, it could be quite some party!

Just checked flights from Cardiff to Inverness.. £1,200 each! (and I thought the train was expensive)!!!! Unfortunately we won't have time to drive up....but we'll keep looking for cheaper flights. Sounds like a great weekend.

Looks interesting Giok, especially if a cottage & car-sharing were possible. Weekend after Banbury looks fairly clear, but wouldn't be able to make the last weekend in October, that's Bampton!

We'll have the sprog too but I can leave it with my Mum and Dad, she's trying to get us to move up to somewhere near Inveress, and has offered child care!!! Liz...I'm sure we can arrange something with my parents for limpit care, nearer the time!

Easyjet offer the cheapest flights to Inverness. BA are ok but tend to be on the expensive side....speaking from experience over the past 18 months or so!

October or September are fine with us.

SHould be a good gathering in stunning scenery!

Carol, just a suggestion.
Maybe look into flying from Cardiff to Glasgow. Then take the lovely train ride up North.
Myself I am looking at flying into London visiting and grabbing a couple of other Mudders.. to resist is futile..*grin then heading up there.

I'll keep my eye out for cheap flights too for you.
Steer well clear of the easyjet mob.
Cheap they may be but very unreliable. Trust me. Been burned enough by those chancers.

Think Giok may be in Portaferry this weekend, so don't anyone worry if he doesn't check in for a couple of days!

Have looked at the local Youth Hostel which is a haunted castle and could be good fun. Just gotta wait till Giok settles on a date, that'll be the clincher for me!

The Youth Hostel is AWESOME!!! Worth the trip just to stay there. Had a wonderful few days there some years back.

Slept in the haunted tower. Pretty atmospheric. The reason for the castle being built is fascinating. Worth a little read.

Looks like we should hire a coach for the trip between hotel and airport!

Looks like we've have a potential 'Mud Cat, the Next Generation' gathering here. Some people are going to have to watch their naughty words! (That'd be me then!)

Once again, if anyone needs an overnight or more in London, I'm happy to put people up, just so long as they are not booked onto a flight north that goes earlier than the one *I'M* booked on!

It's better to avoid English school holidays as that makes transport much more crowded and difficult. September would be better (early in the month would also let people doing long trips from overseas combine it with a visit to Whitby FF and/or the Edinburgh Festival).

Chorus:
The midgies, the midgies, I'm no gonna kid yiz,
The midgies is really the limit,
With teeth like piranhas they drive you bananas,
If you let them get under your semmit.

The Lord put the Garden of Eden on Earth,
And it's north of the Tweed we believe.
Aye, Scotland's the place
And the whole human race started off with McAdam and Eve.
In 6 days or under, God finished this wonder
Except for the Forth and Tay bridges
Then always a bloke for a practical joke
He made Scotland the home of the midges.

Chorus

Back in 1314, the proud Edward was keen
To take Scotland into his care,
But he made a U-turn when he reached Bannockburn
Just a few weeks before Glasgow Fair.
Oh the midges let loose by King Robert the Bruce
Straight into the English got tore
So they ran off in tears and for 600 years
They've been blocking the A74

Chorus

Now never forget, when the sun's going to set
And the midges arise on Loch Eck
Like the vampires you see played by Christopher Lee
They will give you a pain in the neck.
You can smack them and whack them
In vain you'll attack them,
For they know every move that you make.
If ye manage to kill yin another half million are ready to come to the wake.

We'd love to go! It'd be the 10th anniversary of our honeymoon in Scotland. I'd vote for September, too. By October we're getting ready for winter hauling down wood, canning garden goods, banking the house foundation, etc. It's a long shot for us to go, though, so plan it for whenever seems best, Giok!
