Subject: What do you think about Joanna Newsom? From: teddy_bear_picnic Date: 10 Feb 07 - 02:18 AM For once a folk artist is actually en vogue. How surprising that such a niche performer (a squeeky voiced harpist) became a top dish on the hipster's musical menu. Despite her voice sounding something like a cross between early Dylan and Alvin(of the Chipmunks) with a dash of Lisa Simpson thrown in for good measure, I think her music is really interesting. The orchestral arrangements on Ys(the only Newsom album I've yet heard) are a little overblown for my taste, but other than that I think it's terrific. She's certainly heavily influenced by traditional English ballads, both lyrically and musically, to which I say: it was about time some one like her became popular! |

The first time i heard it on the radio, i thought 'what is this - is she serious??' but after hearing it a few times it really grew on me. There's definitely something intriguing about the lyrics and overall style. Her videoclips are definitely worth a look too..... I haven't picked up a copy of her new cd yet - it seems stranger than the first, and that was pretty strange! |

From: GUEST,Simon Date: 10 Feb 07 - 05:22 AM There's an advert on at the cinema at the moment by a well known mobile phone company, which has a shows New York during an electricity blackout with a great song on it. I wrote down a line, googled it and it was This side of blue by Joanna Newsom. Absolutely splendid |
