Hi all,
There are plans afoot to organise a folk festival in Bude, North Cornwall. This will be for proper in May (Whitsun) 2008. As a build up to this, as a sort of fund raiser, a weekend of folk music, concerts, sings, and sessions will be happening in Bude over the Whit Bank holiday, 2007. Whit weekend was once a big event in Bude as it was traditionally Whit fayre, which is why this weekend has been chosen.
The budget is at present meagre - almost non-existant, the idea being to raise funds for 2008, though the committee are going to local bodies they believe would be able to contribute financially to it - either sponsoring an event or just donating. I am not actually on the committee, but more giving it my support, and have been asked to help them out. I have been to one of their meetings and they are keen and full of enthusiasm, though some of the people on the committee actually have not a clue about folk music!
Are there any local Morris sides available the weekend of 26, 27 & 28 May, who would be keen to support the event? I dont think there will be much if anything available to pay for your presence, but you are welcome to collect money where you dance, and there will be sessions and sing arounds for you to enjoy while here. Also are there any people keen to come and be a part of this weekend and maybe do a spot - again they can offer no fiancial gain, but hopefully a good time will be had by all! If there is anybody out there keen to offer their services, or to just come along and be a part of it, now's your chance!
Cheers, Lucy

We'd love to support you on this one, Lucy - but unfortunately it's the same weekend as Chippenham FF so we're already rather committed. Good luck with it anyway.

(I had the knee operation on Monday, still hobbling - but improving).

Lucy, I do wish you all the best with your festival, but why plan something to clash with Chippenham, which is such a brilliant event? There must be other weekends....

Sarah,
It's not me doing the organising, but I know what you mean, it would clash with something whenever it was organised! I think this year it is aimed at more local participants, Perhaps I will appeal to the committee to make it a week earlier next year, which could link in well with The Battle Of Stratton, another local historical date, where the town is visited by Civil War re-enactors, many of whom are also keen folk personages!
Leave it with me, but it will have to be Whit for 2007!
Thanks for your input Sarah, Its also Earl Of Rone weekend at Combe Martin, so perhaps the date needs a little rethink there.
I will pass on all comments to the committee.
Many Thanks,
Lucy

If you can manage to make it like the other festivals we meet you at, then it will be one not to be missed. You might be a bit light on dance sides because of Chippenham, but I don't think there is anything much to appeal to singers that weekend.

Thanks for the support there snuffy & breezy, it may well be that we move it to the week before Bank holiday next year, so that we can attract one or two more dance sides down and not clash with The Earl of rone too.
Cheers, Lucy

Snuffy,

I have to disagree with you about Chippenham and there not being anything much to appeal to singers that weekend. I've been to some cracking sing-arounds at Chippenham, not to mention the concerts, and that's even after having being part of the dancing side of things as well in some years. The same goes for Chester and Cleethorpes. Of course we're going to miss Cleethorpes and hopefully it's only going to be for one year.

However, I love Cornwall and there's wonderful singing there as well, so please, Lucy, do have a rethink about the date. Try as we might, Keith and I can't be in two places at the same time.

Cheers

Sylvia

If you do have it the week before, it means anyone who comes down to the Fox and Hounds can stay for a couple of extra days and so yours at the end. What a brilliant week that would be, a really good sing to start with and a really good festival at the end with the bit in the middle for looking round two stunning counties.

I hope it all goes well Lucy and I think Cats idea is a winner! I get involved in organizing the stewards at Chippenham so could not make the Whitsun week-end but the Fox & Hounds is now firmly on my calender after my first visit last year and a festival in between would be great!

I'd love to see a festival in Bude again, lovely part of the country. The proposed weekend would also clash with Plymouth Folk Festival which has been moved so that it now, inconveniently, clashes with Chippenham; I believe the thinking was that a bank-holiday weekend would attract more punters.

Love the idea of combining Fox and Hounds and a festival in Bude. Tea mid week sounds good as well Cats ! Incidentally Lucy we would love to be threre this year but it clashes with our stepsons wedding.

good luck - but Chippers is too near and too full of dancing.

Shrewsbury started carefully. They had a BH monday to play with and for a few years did not use it for events. Look at it now.
Don't over-reach yourself. 4 days may be too much to fill until you have a regular set of afficianados willing to go each year.

Hello All, thanks for all your comments and responses. Well I spoke to The chap who is in charge today, the 'festival' or 'weekend of folk' is on the Saturday and Sunday of May Bank Holiday ~ though I am sure we can organise something for the Friday night early arrivals - and its nice to have a lie in on the monday bfore going home! Like you say Mr Red, we are being cautious, and this is a precursor for 2008. The date Might change for next year, to ewither the week before or the week after, but it is definately over the bank holiday weekend this year. There is a camp site, it has 2 flushing toilets and showers at present, and is a CAMP site - ie NO Caravans or campers, though there are several private ones close to the town. This will be remedied for next year. There is a meeting next week, so I will keep you posted on whats happening.
Cheers, Lucy
