Subject: W.GUTHRIE free talk/perform HULL 22 FEB From: GeoffLawes Date: 17 Feb 07 - 05:26 AM WOODY GUTHRIE:HARD TIMES AND HARD TRAVELLIN' A Musical History Sung and spoken by WILL KAUFFMAN This is a free lecture/ performance that is being put on at the Ferens Building of THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL this THURSDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2007 from 4.30 to 5.30. The university's internal mail said ALL WELCOME so I rang the American Studies Dept and they said non-university outsiders are welcome. The programme description carries the following critique from Susan Castillo Professor of American Studies at King's College, London. .....an hour long musical programme that sets the songs of Woody Guthrie in the context of the American 1930s - the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of Popular music itself. It explores through the performance of twelve songs, buttressed by historical commentary, the blending of music and radical politics that characterised Guthrie's most powerful and evocative work. Will Kauffman presents Woody Guthrie's music with warmth and empathy. he captures the spirit of the era perfectly and conveys the notion that music really can make a difference. |
