I have the recording of Daniel Prayed with Doc Watson and Clarence White. But I can't decipher who does what when it comes to the parts. Does anyone have "Daneil Prayed" written out in parts? I'd really appreciate getting a hold of something like that.

This is one of those songs for which there may BE no sheet music.

So much of folk music doesn't.

There was a bluegrass book published by a Mudcatter, though, and I don't know if this one is in it but maybe someone else does....

Probably by the time anyone finds it, though, you could learn it by ear. It's not too complicated a tune.

I have heard this song done by several groups; it's a complex weaving of three or four lines, and the assignation of lines to voice part varies considerably from group to group. That's a reason definitive sheet music of this piece is problemmatic.

The Stanley Brothers recorded more religious songs than most of the major bluegrass bands. Bluegrass gospel performances stress harmony singing and minimize the role of

written by G.T. Speer of the popular gospel music group the Speer Family. Lead singer Carter Stanley died in 1966; his brother Ralph has maintained much of their sound in

Thanks. It is the weaving of harmonies that has me stymied. I guess I will have to listen to some recordings and come up with whatever I can.

I may be able to find a photocopy of a three part arrangement on actual paper of Daniel Prayed. The local Shape Note group on Bainbridge Island (WA) tried it out (with indifferent success!) about twenty years ago. I know some of us have kept everything we ever tried, and I thought I had, but apparently I've oafed this one. If I find it, I'll try to wrestle it into a PDF. Failing that. I'll solicit a pm with a mailing address.    Carter B

The Red Clay Ramblers do a version of it on either Twisted Laurel or Merchant's Lunch that I like alot, and from which it is possible to pick out all of the parts. In the event Carter isn't able to find the arrangement he has, it would be worth taking a listen to the Rambler's version.

The Red Clay Ramblers are who I learned it from, and I like it a lot. But just now I looked up a number of versions of the lyrics and it is confusing. Some of the words and phrases are just gobbledegook. I think I'll just go on singing the words I'm used to.

For instance, I sing

He cared not for the things of Baal ("avail" makes no sense whatever)
But trusted God who never fails...

And:

Their jaws were locked; it made him shout
And God soon brought him safely out...

One of the versions even speaks of 'derring do'. lol
