Subject: Lyr Add: RHYTHM OF LIFE (Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Jan 05 - 12:41 AM Lyrics copied from http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/sweetcharity/rhythmoflife.htm RHYTHM OF LIFE (Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, from "Sweet Charity") Daddy started out in San Francisco, Tootin' on his trumpet loud and mean. Suddenly a voice said, "Go forth, Daddy. Spread the picture on a wider screen." And the voice said, "Brother, there's a million pigeons Ready to be hooked on new religions. Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your common-law wife. Spread the religion of the rhythm of life." And the rhythm of life is a powerful beat, Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet, Rhythm in your bedroom, rhythm in the street, Yes, the rhythm of life is a powerful beat. To feel the rhythm of life, To feel the powerful beat, To feel the tingle in your fingers, To feel the tingle in your feet. Daddy spread the gospel in Milwaukee, Took his walkie-talkie to Rocky Ridge, Blew his way to Canton, then to Scranton, Till he landed under the Manhattan Bridge. Daddy was the new sensation, got himself a congregation, Built up quite an operation down below. With the pie-eyed piper blowing, while the muscatel was flowing, All the cats were go, go, going down below. Daddy was the new sensation, got himself a congregation, Built up quite an operation down below. With the pie-eyed piper blowing, while the muscatel was flowing, All the cats were go, go, going down below. Flip your wings and fly to Daddy, Flip your wings and fly to Daddy, Flip your wings and fly to Daddy, Fly, fly, fly to Daddy. Take a dive and swim to Daddy, Take a dive and swim to Daddy, Take a dive and swim to Daddy, Swim, swim, swim to Daddy. Hit the floor and crawl to Daddy, Hit the floor and crawl to Daddy, Hit the floor and crawl to Daddy, Crawl, crawl, crawl to Daddy. And the rhythm of life is a powerful beat, Puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet, Rhythm in your bedroom, rhythm in the street, Yes, the rhythm of life is a powerful beat. To feel the rhythm of life, To feel the powerful beat, To feel the tingle in your fingers, To feel the tingle in your feet. To feel the rhythm of life, To feel the powerful beat, To feel the tingle in your fingers, To feel the tingle in your feet. Flip your wings and fly to Daddy, Take a dive and swim to Daddy, Hit the floor and crawl to Daddy, Daddy we got the rhythm of life, Of life, of life, of life. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Man! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rhythm of Life From: Helen Date: 27 Jan 05 - 01:44 AM Emma, Welcome to Mudcat. It works better on this forum if you start a new thread with the song lyrics you are looking for in the title, e.g. Lyr Req: pa pa rong (Note: when you create a new thread choose "Lyr Req" from the drop down menu on the left and just type the song title in the right hand field. Also, it helps a lot if you can give us some more info on the song, e.g. who sang it, when/where you heard it, style of music, any of the lyrics you do know, etc Helen |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Rhythm of Life From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Jan 05 - 02:17 AM If I'm correct, this song was done by Sammy Davis, Jr. in the movie version of Sweet Charity, playing a hip clergyman holding services in a parking garage. Everyone in the congregation was wearing bell bottom pants. Interesting scene, but it sure made the film look dated. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST,Michael Hanscom Date: 13 Oct 05 - 04:03 PM The version that 'GUEST' posted is the same version I learned almost twenty years ago, when I was singing with the Alaska Children's Choir up in Anchorage, AK. Before stumbling across this page, I had no idea that what I learned weren't the original lyrics, or that they were originally from Sweet Charity. Thanks much for this! |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: JohnB Date: 14 Oct 05 - 11:06 AM This is the version our choir did(at least the cover looks like the same one) which is the words posted by Guest above, plus all the other ones Guest did not remember. Being in Canada we changed the place names to Canadian content. "Go and spread the Gospel in Vancouver, take a Walky -Talky to Calgary, all the way to Kingston then to Moncton, even shout it loudly from sea to sea" it then goes on to a Dooby Dooby bit, with different parts doing different Doobies. A local choral group may have a copy you could borrow, I know our choir rents out music to other choral groups. JohnB |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST,GUEST Date: 01 Nov 06 - 04:45 PM I've been looking forever for recordings/lyrics of 2 songs that I sang in a chorus when I was younger. Rhythm Of Life was one of them, and I just found it on bearshare, and the other one was called Dance Dance Dance and this is the closest I could find to being the lyrics of the entire song "In a village called Podolga, somewhere on the upper Volga Lived a man who played the violin. Everynight when work was ended, he would play a tune so splendid; Soon the merry dancing would begin. When they heard his fiddle playing everyone would soon be swaying.Toes would tap and feet would start to fly. In a circle round the fire, spirits soaring ever higher, They would raise their voices to the sky. (Chorus) And they would dance (dance, dance, dance, dance, dance) together through the night. Yes, they would dance (dance, dance, dance, dance, dance) until the morning light. How they would dance (dance, dance, dance, dance, dance) He'd play his magic fiddle and they'd dance; the night away. Everywhere the fiddler stayed he took his violin and played And soon the people came from far and wide. Once they heard his pizzicato there was no one who would not go Dancing all around the country side. With his fiddle he would work a czardas or a mad mazurka As the people whirled around with glee. Villagers would ask him for a trepak or lively hora; Then kick up their heels in ecstacy. (Chorus) (Chorus) And they would dance (dance, dance, dance, dance) Dance (dance, dance, dance, dance) Dance (dance, dance); Dance (dance, dance) Dance (dance, dance); Dance (dance, dance) dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, Dance (dance, dance, dance) the night away!" I'm pretty sure some parts were missing, I remember there being upper soprano parts that aren't here. Unfortunately our condctor has bought a high school musical medly which we are going to learn after our next comp., a week on friday!!! Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: Mick Tems Date: 17 Apr 07 - 09:24 AM Snap! When I was with Cantorion Creigiau (the mixed choir from the village of Creigiau, about eight miles north-west of Cardiff) we sang The Rhythym Of Life and Adiemus as well. The Rhythm Of Life really boiled my kettle, but our own local favourite was Adiemus, by the visionary composer Karl Jenkins, an ex-pupil of Gowerton Comprehensive School in the same county. I love Karl's compositions, including the piece he was commissioned to write for the opening of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. His work has been recorded for several CDs. |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST,Jodi Date: 13 Sep 07 - 08:57 PM I can't stand the "sanitised" (Politically Correct) version of this song - it's original or nothing for me! Why do people do this to songs ... we sang the original version in Grade 6 and now, as an adult, our chorus is doing the sanitised version so as to not offend anyone. What a lot of BS!!! |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST Date: 28 Oct 07 - 10:52 PM I sang this song too, in my performing choir in Melbourned Australia about 15 years ago. I too didnt know it was from Sweet Charity until today and I like the choir version better than the original too. We had a more complex version of this again. It had more parts repeated and was quite long. It also had 5 different groups singing at once. I can't believe that after being so heavily involved in the choir for 3-4 years, performing overseas, training to almost military regimes during 'camps' which were really 14 hours per day of training (which I dreaded) I have forgotten so much!!!. I can't even remember what the 'parts' are called when you talk about each 'group' singing a different line from the sheet music and also what these 'groups' are called. I know I was one of the 2 soprano groups. I read the second top line of music which was equally as high pitched as the other soprano group. There was another line for the some pitch I can't remember and one line for altos. Being 5 lines all up. I also can't remember if alto is the lowest pitch for young girls and whether the other 'group' which I can't remember the name of is higher or lower than altos. How sad am I LOL |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST Date: 28 Oct 07 - 10:55 PM oops, I got so caught up thinking what the names of the girls tones are called that I forgot to add my statement. I was trying to add that we sang a complex version that hand 5 separate groups within the choir singing different lines. All together it sounded beautiful. I'd rly like to know if anyone had sang this version or seen a copy of it somewhere? |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST,guest Date: 04 Dec 07 - 07:45 PM OK well in the song there is no doobie dobbie ect it is doom froom and boom ect. and well i would know cuz i am in 6th grade and my concert is in 4 days and so eyah we are singingt hat song so yeah |
Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Dec 07 - 01:05 AM The sheet music for the choral version is readily available at places like Sheet Music Plus - or download form Sheet Music Direct. My only experience with the song is seeing it in the movie Sweet Charity, where it sounds intentionally corny and stupid. I think of this as a novelty comedy piece, and can't imagine it as a choral performance. There must be something to it, though - this thread has been kept alive forever by people who really seem to love the song. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: GUEST,froggie24 Date: 09 Sep 09 - 10:33 PM to GUEST,lonely star (plus several others) the lyrics you have are for the musical piece. i have been searching for years for the lyrics to the piece i learned in 4th grade choir. and now ive found them. to all of you posting the musical lyrics, that wasnt helpful that was very discouraging. the musical lyrics are very very easy to find. any sheet music site has the musical piece, but not the one i learned. so thanks to GUEST,Here's the words to the variant of The Rythe for posting the lyrics of the version i learned. and please stop claiming that the version you know is the correct version because there is no correct version. |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: The Rhythm of Life From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Aug 10 - 11:32 PM Interesting. I remember watching Sweet Charity very well, but didn't remember this song at all until this thread began. So, I watched the movie again, and I thought the song just didn't fit the rest of the play, and that it was a totally forgettable song. It's a nice attempt at making fun of shallow spirituality, but nothing really inspiring. But apparently it strikes a chord with a lot of people, because the thread has lived forever. I wonder if they find it inspiring. Maybe I shouldn't rain on the parade of those who love this song. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: The Rhythm of Life From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Oct 12 - 07:02 PM We've just been working on The Rhythm of Life - the original cynical version, this is England after all - in a choir I belong to. We sang it in a concert the other day and it went down a bomb. Great fun to sing, with te different parts singing against each other. One interesting difference and a question arising from it - we had the seventh line as "Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your trouble and strife" - a phrase that is rhyming slang for "wife". And the version given here has "Hit the road, Daddy. Leave your common-law wife." So is this a case of an American use of rhyming slang, or a change made here in England? |
