Subject: Louisiana From: GUEST,Gill Cawley Date: 27 Feb 07 - 12:17 PM I am trying to find out anything I can about a song called "Louisiana" or possibly "Down amongst the sugar cane". Its first lines are "Down Louisiana where the sugar cane does grow, Oh oh my, There's my Susie Anna she's the sweetest girl I know, Oh oh my". I'd particularly like to know who wrote it and when, and if possible, who performed it, but any information at all would be very welcome. |

Subject: RE: Louisiana From: GUEST,Gill Cawley Date: 27 Feb 07 - 01:04 PM I spoke too soon. It's a different Susie-Anna! The Library of Congress didn't have my song in its archive. I'm still grateful, though and fairly happy. Can anyone find the song? |
Subject: Lyr Add: DOWN AMONG THE SUGAR-CANE From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 27 Feb 07 - 02:39 PM Susie Anna was very popular on the minstrel circuits, so there are several songs. I think this one is it- "Down Among the Sugar-Cane" 1908 Sheet Music: http://sheetmusic.library.sc.edu/SearchMusicPrint.asp?MID=1230&page=1 Down Among LYR. ADD: DOWN AMONG THE SUGAR-CANE Written by Avery& Hart, composed by Cecil Mack & Chris Smith Down in Louisiana, where the sugar-cane grows, Oh, Oh, my! Lives Miss Susiana, she's the sweetest girl I know, Oh., Oh my! When my work is over 'mongst the sugar-cane, To her home I go just at the bend of the lane; 'Neath her cabin window I am singing this refrain, Oh, Oh, my! Chorus: Can't you see the night am falling? Whippoorwill am singing low? Don't you hear the crickets calling? Calling you and me to go? Susie, don't you keep me waiting; If you do...'twill cause me pain... The moon am shining, and my heart am pining, Meet me down among the sugar-cane. 'Taint no use a-talking, there will be a wedding soon, Oh, Oh, my! Susianna's a-goin' to be my blushing bride, I can see myself a-standing close by her side; 'Deed I'll be a happy person when the knot am tied, Oh, Oh, my! |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Louisiana - Susie-Anna? From: GUEST,Gill Cawley Date: 27 Feb 07 - 06:52 PM There are a lot of Susiannas about. I'm deeply impressed that you found her on the second go. 'Deed I am a happy person. Many thanks. |
