Sandra,
I hope Posting 101 is different from Room 101!
My elder daughter has convinced a freind of her to attend the fiddling master class and I'm the parental taxi service. In the past I've always picked up my volunteer's tag from the Volunteers' registration office (this year up at the northen entrance again, I gather) but I've always arrived on the Thursday. This year I'll get there on the Monday so I just play it by ear where I have to go and get things.

But I had meant Bob's Mudcat badge when I said I'd pick up at the Festival Office on the Thursday evening. Unless we run into each other earlier, that is. My daughters know Lynne and want to see her exhibition (as do I and I used to work in the Gardens and the Herbarium in 1965) and I also have to chase up some info about family military history at the National Archives and the AWM during Easter Week.

Catch you there.

Cheers, Rowan

Bugsy, the office will know nothing about the badges, they are a Mudcat thing.

Bob has them all, & he made one for Mrs Bugsy, too.

He'll be arriving Monday & will be taking photos of the masterclasses.

I'll send you a PM re arranging a meeting with Bob

For the last 36 hours or so, I've been out in the wasteland, where there are no phones and no internet. Well actually, yesterday morning I discovered there was no phone line working, and I had a devil of a job getting to the bottom of it.

Because my phone company uses Telstra's line (Telstra is the big and original phone company, before our phones were privatised) Telstra wouldn't tell me anything about why my line was not working. I had to ring my phone company and get them to ring Telstra. All from my next door neighbour's house, of course. So nobody could tell me anything, except that there seemed to be a fault (d'oh!). It was still down this morning, and I was waiting for a phone call on my mobile from somebody to tell me what was going on. I guessed that possibly Alinta, the mob who have been disrupting our street for the last couple of months putting in huge gas pipes, might have had something to do with it.

Anyway, this afternoon it came back on, and yes, it was all their fault, and apparently we are lucky. Some other customers had their lines much more badly damaged and will be without their phone service for some time yet. The next door neighbour's phone would have been all right because we are on a corner, and he is round the corner from where the works happened. Strange that it should happen now - it's been a couple of weeks since they moved on down the street, and they are now several blocks away where I can't even hear their heavy machinery any more. Odd. Anyway, I'm just glad to be back in contact with the world. That's why I didn't return your call last night, Sandra.

Anyway, my tent, and freda's, have been handed over to Duncan of Black Joak Morris, and our homes-away-from-home will be waiting for us when we get to the National. Luxury!

I got another charger for my camera batteries tonight too - the other one seemed to be cactus - so I'll be able to take lots of pictures! Goody!

The Roaring Forties are also doing a spot in the Union Concert, filling in for the Fagans, who couldn't make it. The New Improved Program (in paler yellow and black writing, complete with mistakes of one page missing and one page repeated) is still not all that easy to read, but it looks like they are on at 5.10pm Saturday in the Budawang.

Also to add to the list, there is Cloudstreet, who say "We'll be around the festival all weekend, but look for us especially as part of Keith McKenry's Lost Folk Songs of Australia concert in the Trocadero on Saturday morning at 11.00 am."

So here is the updated list:

Bugsy & Mrs B
Rowan
Sandra in Sydney
JennyO
freda underhill
Bob Bolton
Chris Maltby
JennieG
Hrothgar
Canberra Chris & a couple of other Shiny Bums whose Mudcat names I've just found -

Possible places to meet -

We have such an impressive list of names, it would be really nice if we could all get together at some point for a group photo. Any ideas? Some years we have met up on the Thursday night, the first night of the festival. There's a concert at the Troubadour that might be a good first meeting place!

Apart from that --

1. EVERY NIGHT - late night singing sessions in The Singing Room (Restaurant, above the Session Bar) AND/OR the Stairwell between said Restaurant & Session Bar

2. Hrothgar's Hymn Singing Session Sunday.
2 years back it was invaded by folks from the Church service who thought it was a continuation of that event. But it's not - it's a great singing session. The first year I went my Jewish friend knew more hymns than me, but then I had left sunday school when I was 12 & he had been going to festivals for decades!

3. Bugsy's apperance @ the Troubador (times, please Bugsy!)

4. any performance of the Shiny Bum Singers.

5. any performance of the Roaring Forties

Friday 2.10pm, Trocadero: CD launch of Yarri of Wiradjuri

Saturday 2pm, Singing Room: Shellback Sheilas (songs of Cicely Fox-Smith)

Saturday 5.10pm, Budawang: in the Union Concert, which actually starts at 2pm.

Sunday 2pm, Troubadour: another CD launch of Yarri, in case you missed the first one.

6. lunchtimes somewhere in the Session Bar 12ish?? (coupla' years back we sometimes met in the area near the door that leads to the Arena) I'd say any time between 12 and 1.30 in the Session Bar on any day.

7. any performance of Cloudstreet: "We'll be around the festival all weekend, but look for us especially as part of Keith McKenry's Lost Folk Songs of Australia concert in the Trocadero on Saturday morning at 11.00 am." I might add - wherever you find Martin Pearson, they will probably not be too far away!

well organised! - Charley, we don't even have a guaranteed meeting spot for a group photo!

I can see a lot of small groups pics heading to Mudcat one day soon. Or a lovely collage.

As Hrothgar's hymn singing at 10.30 Sunday in the Restaurant is the first event in the venue & 10.30 is a respectable hour for everyone to be awake, how about meeting there beforehand for the big smile opportunity?

Aw I dunno Sandra. Might be a bit early for some of us who've been up at a session till 4 or 5. On the other hand tho, I guess I could just STAY up. I've done it before.

Seriously though, I'll make the big effort, and bring my camera too. I'll tell John, but there's every chance he'll be off practising with the Forties - I suspect he'll be doing a lot of that.

Couple of things -

I just had another look at the program - and read this thread through, and thought I should mention that Hrothgar's Hymn Singing Session is at 10am, (not 10.30) on Sunday in the Singing Room (Restaurant) - so if we are meeting for photos it will have to be earlier than that - maybe 9.30? Ooh Sandra, you really are pushing the friendship now! Me at a festival - up at 9.30 in the morning?

Also while looking at the website, I see they finally have a more up-to-date map of the site - site map - where you can see the performers' camping (although I won't be camped there) and it looks like they have moved the Troubadour back to its old central place where they had the childrens festival last year, and the childrens festival is over near the Quokka where the Troubadour was last year. I'm glad they've changed back. I like the old spot. I still think that would be a good first gathering place on Thursday night - wot about from 8pm on?

The other thing is - is everybody clear that Bob Bolton will have the Mudcat badges - not the festival office. At the office, they won't know what you are talking about.

The website still has some glitches. The camping page is still last year's, with last year's map on it, the pdf version of the program has one page blank, one page doubled up and one page missing still. and on the Excel Spreadsheet, which was not working last night, I looked up the performer page, and the times and places for the Roaring Forties were totally wrong. Dunno what's happening there. I'll look again tonight - it's possible they are still working on it.

G'day JennyO,

It may be too late for me to run of badge(s) for Cloudstreet (John & Nic). They are created in a program at home ... printed & laminated here at work - but I'm off on leave this PM - drive to Canberra Monday & set up camp ... hard at work Tuesday. I'll see if I can do some 'cross-program' magic ... but I'm not promising!

BTW: You write: "Me at a festival - up at 9.30 in the morning?" ... my heart bleeds for you ... Thursday 5 April I've transferred my fortnightly blood plasma donation from Sydney's Kent St Blood Bank to Canberra - so I have an appointment for 7.30 AM ... at Garran (Canberra Public Hospital) ... about 16 km in a straight line (and nothing in Canberra proceeds in a straight line!) SSW of the Festival site. I figure I'll have to leave the campsite by 6.30 AM at latest, to get through interview and medical check, even before the 30 - 40 minute plasmapheresis (and I'm supposed to have drunk at least one litre of water (or, at least fluids free of: caffeine, theine, alcohol - or any other diuretic!) to make sure blood flows quickly enough.

Regard(les)s,

Bob

G'day Bob,

Well, the solution is obvious - stay up the night before. I'm sure there'll be some sessions happening on Wednesday night. The water and no alcohol or caffeine bit might be a bit of a pain though :( My heart definitely bleeds for you.

I know all about the "straight lines" in Canberra - there aren't any. I find it very easy to get lost there, I'm afraid.

I took the time of hymn session from Hrothgar's post - I assume the time was taken from the 2006 program on the website.

Last night I had a second look at the program & while it used readable colours, it was not a readable font & had pages missing! So I departed again. I eagerly await the paper program I will be handed next Wednesday.

Troubador at 8pm Thursday is great, so to a 9.30 start on Sunday!!!

Ha! That was Hrothgar's first post, when he thought he was being followed by Margret Roadknight. I think he must have been looking at last year's program.

This year, Hrothgar's hymn session is at 10 o'clock, then there is a decent gap of half an hour, followed by a gospel workshop with somebody called Briar Eyers.

I went by the program AND Hrothgar's second post 'ere!

That doesn't surprise me at all, freda. Since Sunday, the days in Sydney have been noticeably cooler, and the temperatures at night have dropped - particularly last night. Some suburbs got down into single figures for the first time in months. Our minimum here in Earlwood was 10. The same is predicted for tonight too. I take it you're not in Canberra now, though.

Comms Rowan? I have a feeling I should know, but what is that?

Bob, if that's all the weather has to throw at us, it won't be too bad. A little chilly at night is all. We seem to be getting down into the cooler temps at night here anyway, and while today is supposedly 21.2 in Canterbury at the moment (12.35pm), there is a nasty cool wind, and the apparent temperature is only 15.6. The Canberra days look very pleasant by comparison.

Could be.......

I will be working in the main office (not the ticket office) on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 8am(yikes!)-noon, and on Friday 4-8pm.

On Tuesday I hope to get to the Botanic Gardens for the embroidery exhibition but I have to suss out the bus timetables, it isn't looking promising at this stage. Buses only seem to run on weekends and school holidays to the gardens. It's a long walk from EPIC.

After tomorrow morning I won't have internet access so any more witticisms will just pass me by........!

See youse at the festival.

Cheers
JennieG

I'm pleased I didn't include my medium jacket in the bags Bob is carrying to Canberra. I just might carry my heaviest one!

Oi freda! Thort you were going straight to bed.

Here's a link to a map of the festival, so you can see roughly where I think we will be camped - site map

Imagining the oval as a clockface, if you find the Fitzroy Building down near 5 o'clock, the next street to the left off the street it is in has another little blue building - marked Bld M, which is the Mallee. Just above it at the edge of the oval, you will see toilets marked - at about 4 o'clock. I seem to remember there is a gateway there, and our campsite should be just past there, somewhere just to the right of the oval but higher up on the map, at about 3 o'clock.

Hope it makes some sense to you. Sounds about as clear as mud to me, but I don't know how else to describe it. Last year they had a PDF version of the map, which you could zoom in on, which had a lot more detail. This one is somewhat lacking in detail.

Still better keep your mobile on on Thursday though. There is no guarantee that they will get exactly the same spot they got last year.

Actually, I have Duncan's mobile number, so I might be able to get a better idea of where they are before I even go down. If I find out more, I'll let you know.

For me it's two more sleeps, then off in the car on Thursday morning. I'm about half packed. Gotta get off Mudcat and go and do something!
