Subject: Looking for R. David Jones-guitarist and violin
From: GUEST,Mitch Diamond
Date: 12 Mar 07 - 04:58 PM

I'm looking for an old friend, R. David Jones. David was very important in furthering my knowlege of Folk Music. He plays a mean guitar and I heard that he took up violin a decade or two ago. He was in staff at Pinewoods camp for Folk Music Week back in the early 70's. He lived in Bricktown, N.J. and then in Lee, MA. I've heard that he moved to Maine but nobody is sure. All my friends have lost track of him. Anybody know where he is at? This is not the wonderful English singer, David Jones.
Thanks,
Mitch Diamond

New York state, near NYC. I've never been to Pinewoods, but I knew R. David. I sat with him working the gate to the performers' campground at Fox Hollow, and he showed me how to tune my new fiddle. He did learn to play, and I remember him being thrilled to pieces because someone, for the first time, began dancing to a tune he played. He came to session we had in Troy, NY for a while and then he moved out of the area (as did I). I think George Ward might have kept in contact for a while, but I haven't seen him around Mudcat for a while.

Try

nypinewood@aol.com

They do not have a staffed office, but possibly they address their e-mails within a few days. That's a place to start, Mitch. Best of luck in your quest.

I saw him four or five years ago - he came up to Saratoga/Ballston Spa for the Gottagetgon festival, and a few members of the Pick'n ' n' Sing'n' Gather'n' keep in touch with him I believe. He was working construction, and living in or near Chicopee MA.

Pinewoods Camp itself is in Massachusetts, near Plymouth. Way out in the woods, with Long pond in front of it, and Round Pond back a ways behind it. Spent many wonderful weeks there in many summers. Folks who summered at Pinewoods Camp were the ones who started Pinewoods Club, in NYC. R. David was on the staff in MA a few times I believe.

I'll try the Pick'n ' n' Sing'n' Gather'n' for info. I've been asking the people at Pinewoods Inc. about him for years. Nobody seems to know wher he is gone.
Thanks ,
Mitch
