BS: The man who sued God

The man who sued God is a wonderful film made in 2001 involving the Insurance companies who say "Its an act of God ...or... It was God's will." and therefor deny any payment to the people who pay insurance in case of a disaster.

I am reminded of that obscure disaster that happened a long long time ago called Katrina and the behavior of our upstanding Insurance companies.

The excuse to not pay victims who were insured is certainly a very Christian excuse.

Quite aside from that, I believe there was some case of a man in the USA (where else?) who had attempted to sue God a few years back, because his life "hadn't worked out" according to his expectations (he didn't have the job, money, house, fame, and female companionship he thought he merited). He figured the Allmighty was to blame. He managed to find a lawyer willing to represent him, and he managed to get a preliminary court hearing. Before they got down to wrestling with the thorny problem of how to get God to "appear" in court the judge threw the case out. Too bad, because they could easily have charged God with contempt of court for not showing up! ;-) Then they could have had a great old debate about whether or not God was actually present, bringing in all kinds of wonderful theological arguments, pro and con. With a little imagination on the part of the court system, this idiot who launched the suit could have been allowed to fight it all the way up to the Supreme Court, and it would have made a wonderful reality TV series too.

Before you can charge contempt, you must have proof of service. Kind of tough to arrange.

Just think, LH...you could have been a witness for one side, explaining how God IS 'everywhere'. But as this would put "the Almighty" in jeopardy, you might have been ZAAAPPPPED for your trouble... ;>)

He threw the case out for lack of jurisdiction, I expect. God is obviously a foreign national.

Hell of an interesting point, Bill! ;-)

How would they collect damages if God refused to pay?

This movie is the best FEEL GOOD movie of the decade.

IT is a romantic comedy that rivals 'Sleepless'
It is a spiritual movie
It is a political movie
It is a movie of ethics
It is a movie of the courts
IT is a movie of miracles
It is a religious movie
It is simply a wonderful work that left me with a glowing smile for years to come.

The idea of suing God is ridiculous! However, if you ever get sick from eating marshmallow eggs, I hear the Easter Bunny is loaded.

The arguments regarding sueing GOd are put forth in a cogent manner in this film. The comedy of how The Church and Insurance companies are made to clash due to the real fundamental issues at hand are PRICELESS !

I am going to record this film next Monday at 9:50
god willing.

on a side note, the Colbert Report a while ago had a congressman
who fought to have the 10 commandments in schools and libraries etc..
and when Colbert asked him to state the commandments he could only come up with three...

I am positive that both the insurance companies AND the church are not anxious to have ANYONE see this film.

Once you see it, you will know why it has been hidden from your view.

Thanks, Donuel. I will have to see if netflix has it.

Having just emerged from an agonizing 24 hour migraine this film was just what the doctor ordered. I went ahead and got it from Amazon just in case.

Since netflix has taken off I have seen 3 blockbusters around here close their doors.

I found and ordered it on Intelliflix (which I use in preference to Netflix), and look forward to seeing it.

There's United States ex rel. Mayo v. Satan and His Staff, U.S. District Court, Western District of Pennsylvania, 54 F.R.D. 282, 1971:

The courst ruled, in part,

...We note that the plaintiff has failed to include with his complaint the required form of instructions fo the U. S. Marshal for directions as to service of process....

There was also Lodi v. Lodi, Court of Appeals of California, third Appellate District, 173 Ca. App. 3d 628; 219 CAl. Rptr. 117 (1985) in which Oreste Lodi sued himself. The Court dismissed the appeal and required each party to bear his own cost.

Christy Bros. Circus v. Turnage, Court of Appeals of Georgia, 38 Ga. App. 581; 144 S.E. 680, 1928, in which the circus was sued because a "...horse evacuated his bowels into [the Plaintiff's] lap...."

And to disprove any nationalism on my part:

Dickes v. Fenne, King's Bench, Michaelmas Term, 15 Charles II,
82 E.R. 411; March, N.R. 60 (1640):

...The defendant having communication with some of the customers of the plaintiff, who was a brewer, said, the he would give a peck of malt to his mare, and she should piss as good beer as Dickes doth brew....

The main character is played by Billy Connolly, one of my favourite people.

I saw this film in the UK some time ago - thought it was excellent.

IIRC, a rabbi once sued God for breach of contract -- not living up to His side of the covenant with the Jewish people. I presume that (as with the U.S. government) he had His permission to do so. I forget how it came out.

Also IIRC, a commune once tried to deed its land to God, and the state (California, of course) ruled that God was not a legal person.

Finally, I once read a short story (I think in the New Yorker) in which people picketed a church to protest the human condition. The cops beat them up.

The film was made around Bermagui, south coast of NSW; Godzone country! Can't think of why she let them.

Which God would you sue?

I'll have you know it's 4am here and I can't sleep for some strange reason. I don't think this'll help!

Your next Donuel for starting this:-)

Exactly!! When your insurance policy states 'act of God' how do you get them to stipulate which one?

I suppose Kali would be a good candidate...

It's one hell of a film, very interesting and extremely funny, god forbid had he won....

How could this man go in court and swear on the bible to 'tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth' would there not be a conflict of interest here!!!

Lou Gottleib refused to pay taxes on his San Francisco property because he deeded it to god. That didn't work.

You might as well sue Santa Claus for not bringing presents on time.

Seeing as God is the father of all mankind, shouldn't he be chased for child maintenance??????? Dating back to the beginning of time, he must owe a fair whack!!
