Sam Morgan's Jazz Band recorded a few numbers in 1927 for Columbia; some may be listened to at Red Hot Jazz.

An old New Orleans marching favorite is "Sing On." I remember that there were words to the tune.
Is anyone able to post them? They would be much appreciated.

"Over in the Gloryland" and "Bogalousa Strut" also are among the recordings that can be heard at Red Hot Jazz.

Many other bands have recorded SING ON too. It certainly sounds like it ought to have lyrics, but all the sound samples I have listened to are instrumental only ... with one exception:

Document Records has a compilation CD called "Black Vocal Groups, Volume 1, 1924-1930," on which is SING ON sung by The Original Valentine Choral Club Quintette. The song is attributed to Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey. (Most jazz albums call SING ON "traditional," so maybe this means Dorsey wrote lyrics to go with a traditional tune?)

I have listened to a sound sample, and I find the lyrics mostly unintelligible, but it does sound like the same song, and the words "Sing on, sing on" appear just where you'd expect them to.

Thanks, Jim. It also is possible that the band I heard in New Orleans was just repeating 'sing on' along with their playing of the melody.
The tune does have something of a gospel sound to it.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for a decent CD issue of the Sam Morgan Band. I only have them on vinyl at present.

Many thanks.

I suppose that would not be the guy in Hank Snow's song. :-}

Timeless Records (UK) BDW8002 cd has 8 tracks of Morgan, the rest Celestin (25 total). Found no others.

Dunno, Sandy. Is Snow Black?
