The Wind That Shakes The Barley--best photography, direction, scenery, acting, non Irish stage characters, political scene toward the end of the movie. What else could one want?

Been reading the reviews & coincidentally just cut out the review from "The Irish Echo" to send to a friend. They all agree with you. I'm in Dutchess Co. & it has not made an appearance here yet. We used to have an art theatre-but it's closed down. Slainte.

Thanks to Divis I have seen this movie. It is a stunning piece of work. I would hardily recommend all that have an interest in the last 90 years of Irish history to see it. It will help you understand the roots of much of what you see now.

I was not so taken with it, and we discussed it at some length in the previous threads about the film.

I thought it was quite good. Certainly not a boring watch. I'm one of Divis's customers as well.

I think it was a good film in that it was partisan without being uncritical of the IRA. There was no doubt who the director was rooting for, but some of the criticisms aimed at the rebel hero were quite unanswerable - and there weren't any glib answers offered.

So in my opinion, a serious film.

The movie has just been released in the US--few weeks ago. Limited showings--one theater in Manhattan, one in Westchester Co., one in Queens, and I think one in northern NJ.

Another point, I read somewhere a few years ago that many if not most of the Blacks & Tans were Irish Catholic soldiers who had been discharged from the British Army and were offered this new opportunity at employment back in Ireland. I cant remember the name of the book that had this information but it was pretty well received when it was published. Anyone have any information on this point?

Two truths about the black & tans:
My Mother at age 10, was a message carrier, sub rosa. She rode her 2 wheeler to bring news from one group of IRA men to another. She was stopped one day, searched and finding nothing the b.& ts. taunted her with anti-Papist remarks and pulled the chain & crucifix from her neck. This was in West Cork.

My Dad, from Monaghan, told of being in a pub which was run by a man and his 16 year old daughter. Suddenly, 3 or 4 tans came in and rousted the locals and eyed the lovely girl. They insisted she have a drink-she refused as her Dad explained she was too young. These bastards lifted her up and placed her flat on the bar & poured whiskey, from a bottle, down her throat. When she became sick they poured the rest over her body. They were, of course, armed & the few locals who were present dared not intervene.

A truly terrible time.

Did my message get cut off

Both my parent were from Clare. My cousin still owns the family farm, in fact both cousine still own both farms in the west of Clare.

I am boasting but it is late on Sunday evening, the Mulqueens were mentioned n the Four Master in the 9th century Ad. A part of Ennis is named after them, a "noted bardic family". The Donnellans are perhaps not more moted, but if I ever said to my mother or relatives there would be a problem.

John T. Mulqueen-Even if it was a Thursday afternoon- boast away. You've a right.

Just read the Irish Echo Newspaper. There is going to be a movie bio. of James Connolly-the workingman's hero. He was my Father's hero too.

One of the best trips my late husband & I had was around "83. We took my Dad back to Eire-he had left there 60 years before. We covered alot - but for him the most touching was a courtyard in Kilmainham jail where Connolly was tied to a chair & executed. He was unable to stand because the beatings he endured broke his leg. Of course many others met their fate in that place. I put Kilmainham & Gettysburg as the most reverential sites I've seen.

Like a fool I told Divis I'd catch it at the cinema (being a stickler for watching films using the medium intended for delivery), missed it and had to wait six months to see it on DVD.

Excellent film though. Uncomfortable viewing at times but a job well done by the Director.

James Connolly was indeed wounded in the fighting at the GPO. His injuries were so severe that he had to be tied to a chair, in order to be executed. Connolly, IMO, is probably the key figure in the Rising. Were it not for his bringing his Citizens Army to bear, the Rising likely wouldn't have come off.

He is a personal hero of mine. I have a number of books and collections by and about him. Many folks might not realize, but Connolly wrote a whole pamphlet of song lyrics. He was a Union Organizer, a lyricist, and a Socialist. He organized for the Industrial Workers of the World (the IWW, or Wobblies) in Scotland and in the United States. For a list of his archived works, and links to many of them, GO HERE.

Truly a great man.

In my opinion both him and Padraig Pearce were the key figures in the Rising, although without Connolly's committment to action it's possible the Rising might never have happened. However, without Pearce issuing the declaration from the steps of the GPO the significance of the Rising would have not been the same.

I agree though Mick, Connolly was a man of the people and a committed socialist and his prime concern was the rights of workers - a fact often overlooked by people who see him just as a truculent Irish Nationalist.

Of Possible Interest:

A Google search turned up an interesting site:
http://www.uk/history/british/easterrising/songs/rs_song05.shtml

(Real Audio)

Part of a song on this site:
James Connolly

Who carries high our burning flag,
Who carries high our burning flag,
Oh who but James Connolly all pale and wounded,
Carries high our burning flag.
They carried him up to the jail,
They carried him up to the jail,
And 'twas there that they shot him one bright May morning,
And quickly laid him in his grave.
Who mourns now for our James Connolly,
Who mourns now for that fighting man,
Oh lay me down in yon green garden,
And make my bearers Union men

There are other audios which I'm unable to access. After a cursory look it appears to be a learning tool for some. Myself included-I didn't recall about the Auxillaries who were sent in after the B.& T.-They evidently were cut from the same mean cloth.

You live & learn. (If you're doing it right!)

Never heard it & I've quite a collection & keep adding to it.

There was another song as if from J.C.'s mouth where he talks to Lil (I guess it's his wife) And tells her I didn't come here to die. It is very touching-But damn if I could find it on Google. Came across it at 3:00 am and thought I'd saved the site--but it's gone with the wind. Anyone know that one?

As I listened the first song I referenced _ It felt like I was back in Bantry at my Dear Aunt's home-When people would drop in with their stories, fiddles, cordeens & their voices. Oh Gosh-it was GREAT! I'm speaking of the early 60's. TV changed it all.
This is fun.

Here ya go, Mickey.

the band is Black 47 - James Connolly Lyrics

Marchin' down O'Connell Street with the Starry Plough on high
There goes the Citizen Army with their fists raised in the sky
Leading them is a mighty man with a mad rage in his eye
"My name is James Connolly - I didn't come here to die
But to fight for the rights of the working man
And the small farmer too
Protect the proletariat from the bosses and their screws
So hold on to your rifles, boys, and don't give up your dream
Of a Republic for the workin' class, economic liberty"
Then Jem yelled out "Oh Citizens, this system is a curse
An English boss is a monster, an Irish one even worse
They'll never lock us out again and here's the reason why
My name is James Connolly, I didn't come here to die....."
And now we're in the GPO with the bullets whizzin' by
With Pearse and Sean McDermott biddin' each other goodbye
Up steps our citizen leader and roars out to the sky
"My name is James Connolly, I didn't come here to die...
Oh Lily, I don't want to die, we've got so much to live for
And I know we're all goin' out to get slaughtered, but I just can't take any more
Just the sight of one more child screamin' from hunger in a Dublin slum
Or his mother slavin' 14 hours a day for the scum
Who exploit her and take her youth and throw it on a factory floor
Oh Lily, I just can't take any more
They've locked us out, they've banned our unions,
they even treat their animals better than us
No! It's far better to die like a man on your feet
than to live forever like some slave on your knees, Lilly
But don't let them wrap any green flag around me
And for God's sake, don't let them bury me in some field full of harps and shamrocks
And whatever you do, don't let them make a martyr out of me
No! Rather raise the Starry Plough on high, sing a song of freedom
Here's to you, Lily, the rights of man and international revolution"
We fought them to a standstill while the flames lit up the sky
'Til a bullet pierced our leader and we gave up the fight
They shot him in Kilmainham jail but they'll never stop his cry
My name is James Connolly, I didn't come here to die...."

I have played festivals with the band that recorded it, Black 47. So I just googled "James Connolly Black 47" and it popped right up.

I don't know what side of the pond you are on. I am on the East Coast of the USA, in southern New Jersey. I am right across the river from one of the great folk music cities, Philadelphia.

I have been a Mudcatter since late '98. I think we need to start a "Micks of Mudcat" club. There is myself, yourself, and Mick Bracken. That is a helluva good start, I say.

Drop me a PM and let's get to know each other.

does it not bother anyone that a character (Teddy) based on Gen. Tom Barry would fight on the side of the treaty & the irish free state? For those who don't know, that's the treaty that sold away the north & put the republic at civil war. Barry was a republican always. A fine man. "The wind that shakes the barley", directed by an englishman, takes from our incredibly painful and heroic West Cork -ingredients for a good fiction. Here's to someday making a film commemorating the true brave Irish heroes. Terrorized by black & tans, farmers, young boys & old men fought outnumbered - 312 men from west Cork brought the British army 12,800 stationed in west Cork, to it's knees. May we remember our brave heroes on this eve of sunday bloody sunday. Don't let them be forgotten even as our politicians rush to join the british crown. Sean O Tuama writes : "say your prayers for the brave soul of "x", even if you find that your prayers have turned to tears...

I saw the movie in Dundalk in July 2006. It was so emotional that it is the only movie I have ever seen where nobody in the audience spoke or made any noise during the movie or even when it was over. We all just walked out of the cinema in complete silence. It was an eerie feeling.

My mother had some stories about the Tans, especially about them throwing a grenade into a group of children playing" ring -arounf-a - rosie''. She had a photograph of the blackened street. I believe my older brother still has the photo.
I heard a few reasons as the why wore the unusual uniform
1 - so they would not be confused with either the police or the regular army.
and
2 - nNt enough complete uniforms to go around so they had to use part of the army uniform and part of the police uniform.
They were bad days indeed.
