Review: Ron Olesko's Folk Music Notebook

I have never met Ron Olesko, though I hope to rectify that one day. Perhaps we will be some place where we can shoot the breeze, and make a little music. He had no idea that I was going to start this thread, but I imagine he knows now .... LOL. But I just felt as though it was necessary to comment on his blog.

One of the things that is so important in our wonderful world of Folk Music is to pass it on, to take every opportunity to tell others why we love this genre so. Another important facet is making sure we support the artists and public figures so that they can continue to tell our story.

Ron's blog has intrigued me from day one. He thinks his way through these things. Currently he ran a story on a neighbor of mine in Michigan who I have the greatest respect for -- Joel Mabus. The blog entry is well written, personal, and interesting as hell. I want to urge you to give it a read. And check in with him from time to time. You won't be sorry.

Thanks for doing this, Ron. It is a great blog.

Le gach dea-mhĂ©in,

Mick

Good writing, Ron. I like the blog very much. Also now have it bookmarked. I wish there were some way to get the show up here in Alberta. But then I wish that for Open Mike's and Mike Regenstrief's shows too.

Mick,
If you attend my house concert on Sunday afternoon, May 6th featuring Joe Jencks, you will get a chance to meet Ron in person. He will be my guest emcee for this show and I am very honored that he agreed to do this for me.

Thank you Frank!

Peace, my show (also co-hosted with Bill Hahn)can be heard live on Sundays from 3 to 6pm ET via the internet. We offer streaming audio on our website at www.wfdu.fm .   I think Mike's show is also available through his stations website as well.

Mick ~

As you probably already know, your best chance of meeting Ron is before you return home to Michigan, while you and he are both living in NJ (albeit at opposite ends of the state).

Thanks for pointing the rest of us to Ron's very interesting site; I suppose he was too modest to tell us about it himself!

Yep, Poppa, I do have a number of folks I want to meet up with before I head home. Ron and Bill are at the top of that list.

Sol, I sure wish I could come up for that concert.

Thanks for the thread, Mick, and thank you Ron for the heads up. I have "Traditions" bookmarked and I'll do my best to listen up next Sunday.

I was in NJ myself for several months winter-before-last ('05-'06) but never did meet up with as many Mudcatters as I might have.

I was pleased and privileged to borrow a guitar from Tinker, and later to return it, making for two visits to her home up in Montclair. Once I attended a benefit show at South Street Seaport in NYC for our shantey-singing group in New Orleans, and a few of the folks I met there had Mudcat connections. Also, on one one of my many trips back and forth between my childhood home in New Jersey and my current home in New Orleans, I managed a stopover in Luray, VA, for a brief visit with the one and only Bobert.

I had plenty of other idle daydreams about showing up for visits and/or events from Delaware to New England, but never actually did so.

Now that I'm back home in New Orleans, of course, I would be glad for any of you to visit me. Drop me a PM if you're interested in the devastation tour, the inside scoop on live local music options, etc.
