Is there a way that I can download them as 3 groups and not have to download each one separately? It would be much easier than 38 separate downloads !
Thanks,
pyewacket

Thank you, Jimlad...some lovely songs there, and well sung! Listening to "Dumbarton's Drums" as I type.

Wow, THANKS, Jim Lad!! Great stuff...singing along with Tell Me Ma. Wee Red is going to love these. Thanks for your generosity.

well, I am using a download manager...what I do is right click on the title and COPY the link into my download manager. Then I change the ending from 'm3u' to 'mp3' and tell it where to save the file. I do this so that I can have several downloading at the same time. (note..Jim's server is not extremely fast, and it WILL take a bit, so there might not be any easier way than just giving it time to work.) It took me about 10-15 minutes to get one album, and I am on broadband)

If you do not use a download manager, you may have to resort to pasting the link into your browser window and playing the song, then moving it from the default location. (an 'm3u' file is small, and only refers to the original location...but when played, the song MUST be temporarily ON your computer as an MP3...you just need to know where this directory is)

(note...2 of the albums have one format, and has mp3.m3u at the end

http://jimbrannigan.com/The%20Hills%20of%20Margaree/05%20I'll%20tell%20my%20Ma.mp3.m3u

while the middle one is slightly different and has ONLY m3u...

the link you want is just one with .mp3, so in one case you delete the m3u. amd in the other, you change m3u TO mp3.

It didn't even take me that long, Bill. I just left clicked, then clicked save to disk instead of open with Real. My download manager asked me to save them write in my CD writing program and I had all 38 in about 5-8 minutes. Then it only took about 2-3 minutes to burn them all to CD.

hmmmm...'save as' simply gets me the tiny .m3u file. I might have to fiddle with basic settings. Oh, well...I have almost 2 of the albums done now anyway.

No matter how it works, it's a very generous and thoughtful gift!

here is way M3Us are explained. They are really just a place holder which direct you TO a file. (One thing they do is help prevent too easy wholesale downloading, as they require a little time to go thru the steps.)

The downloaders are five deep at the bar right now. I don't know whether that slows things down or not.
Be sure to tell your friends. I'd feel bad if somebody tuned in for their weekly/monthly folk fix and it was gone.

*smile*...it's ok, Jim...they'll manage.

I assume someone set up the details for you, and did m3u as a helpful safeguard. It 'may' slow things temporarily..or it may not. It depends on the server.

again...great music.

Only 3 on board that I can see, right now. San Diego, Edmonton and Portland. So maybe not a bad time for someone else to drop in.
Just got a nice e-mail from one of the regular Catters in Victoria too.
You know there have been 40 Mudcatters dropped in for their supplies in the past few hours. I like that. I won't feel quite so bad when I take the free music down.

Thank you all for your patience today and "No" this has not been an April Fools thing. Since I posted this thread this morning, 119 of you have dropped in and taken something home.
I am extremely flattered by that and will not feel quite so bad when I edit my web-site now.
I would expect that the free downloads will be gone late this evening or tomorrow.
Now hear this from me: If one or two of your friends missed out, please feel free to send whichever tracks they want to them. You'll be saving me the bother and as I've often said; "Music is for sharing".
Cheers
Jim

Oops, don't bogart that joint just yet, please Jim!

I spoke too soon, as BillD cleverly knew. A few of the ones I captured are mp3's the rest as m3u and when I right click it doesn't seem to matter what I tell it, they remain m3u's. Will go do some homework and see if I can figure it out.

I thought I'd figured it out. Went to my download fiels, found mp3s and burned to a CD. They cannot be played by winmedia nor realplayer, either. I know I am doing something wrong.:-)

01 Apr 07 - 08:39 PM (#2013949)
Subject: RE: MP3s, Clearance Blowout!
From: Bill D

kat..the link has to be TOLD to download MP3s at the time of downloading.

Whether you do it one at a time, or in a download manager, you must specify MP3 by changing the extension, then saving it.

i.e. http://jimbrannigan.com/The%20Hills%20of%20Margaree/01%20Air%20fa%20la%20la%20lo.m3u

was changed to http://jimbrannigan.com/The%20Hills%20of%20Margaree/01%20Air%20fa%20la%20la%20lo.mp3

in your browser window, you can paste: http://jimbrannigan.com/The%20Hills%20of%20Margaree/01%20Air%20fa%20la%20la%20lo.mp3, and it will play...then you'd have to go to Win Explorer or some other file manager and find the directory.(in Firefox, it might be 'documents & settings-> owner-> application data-> firefox-> profile-> cache4.......or something like that, unless you have SPECIFIED a different default temoporary directory. You have to KNOW this for various uses. (Opera 9 makes it easy!)..

If you can't get it worked out in time, I'll get it to you some other way...*grin*

Thanks, Bill. When I right click on each file, I get a "save link as" which I click on. That opens up a box in which I tell it to save it to My Download Files. At that time, it wants to save as an m3u. I switch the drop down so it reads All Files, then I change the extension to mp3. It *looks* as though it saves it as mp3, but when I go back and try to open the file which ends in mp3, it actually shows up as an m3u.mp3.

Conversely, some of them do show up saved as mp3, but will not play in MusicMatch or Winmedia. I finally did get one of them to play in RealPlayer, though.:-)

Thanks, again, Jim and Bill.

01 Apr 07 - 11:04 PM (#2014033)
Subject: RE: MP3s, Clearance Blowout!
From: Bill D

nope...you can't do it that way...changing the extension of what it downloads as it is downloading just disguises it. (What Real Player is doing, I'll bet, is taking that .m3u and using it to go BACK online and play the file again.)

That's why it needs to be downloaded AS an MP3, and why I say that once you play it, that MP3 exists in some arcane directory.

**IF** you use a download manager like ummm.... Net Transport on that page.(my personal fav)(last freeware version), you can paste the URL for the song into it, change the extension TO mp3, specify the location, THEN let it download the file AS an MP3.Net Transport can do several files at once...(I set it to 4, so as not to overload things).....this is how I got all the files in about 45 min. to an hour.

Over the next few days, the free downloads at http://jimbrannigan.com will be gone.
Turns out that some of them can't be burnt to disc unless you know how to game the system. Sorry. I didn't know that.
However; you can find some of the music at ezFolk.com,
or at Lastfm
which is fairly difficult to navigate and also at Carbon Logic which is a nice wee site but may not allow downloads.
PM me with the tracks that won't burn for you and I'll e-mail them to you.
If you can handle the larger files that would be great. If not, we'll do the 128 bit rate thingy.
Other solutions can include burning extra copies for your Mud cat friends and mailing them out.
You are entitled to burn copies, of course.
Much as I have enjoyed giving the music away, it has been getting in the way of selling the damn stuff on other sites.
What can I say? I've had great fun with you today. One Hundred and Eighty visitors at last count.
They say my Uncle John felt like this the day before he died.
I'll lie down now.
Night all!
Jim

the Carbon Logic site seems to require Flash and is tricky to manage.

Thanks Jim Lad.

We'll have to do something about the sound of that voice of yours - do you smoke or drink cheap booze? Ah - well, get started now, and that'll fix it in about 20 or 30 years, then....

I wasn't sure whether my dialup would allow me to get them all in the time you said, so I got them in the order I wanted - then left it on autopilot background downloader.

The 'trick' BillD posted about changing the extensions to get the mp3 files pointed to by those m3u files, only works in this instance because all of the files are in the same directory (folder) - some sites even have the mp3 files pointed to by the m3u files, so you really need to check that if Bill's simple trick fails. If you get the m3u file for the mp3 and read it as a text file - you will see the exact path that you need.

"Star of the Cuonty Down" No matter how many times I fix that, it keeps coming back.
I've been smoking since I was thirteen, by the way. I'd love to quit before my next recording.
If you go into advance tag editor with those tracks, you may find Authors, Lyrics and such. I've synchronized the lyrics with the tracks but can't get them to show up in any of my players.
Anyway, I might get out for a pint tonight but the tracks could vanish any time after that.
Lastfm will be the most reliable but I think they only allowed 128 kbs or mph or whatever it is.
Thank You All very much.
Been a business doing pleasure with you.

I dl'ed a mess of tracks last night and have been (thoroughly!) enjoying them while I work today.
Can I ask one favor tho? Please tell me what year you released each of these recordings. I'm one of those poor souls who *have* to have complete information on things, and that empty "year" field in my music software is driving me crazy.

HOMELESS! You refreshed the thread. Things had almost died off there.
Ah well. I'm having trouble with Frontpage anyway.
"The Singing Bird" album was released on March 17, 1997.
"The Hills of Margaree" would have been November, 1990.
and "Troubadour" was March 2003.
I encrypted the information on the albums but it gets lost somehow.
Thanks for taking an interest.
Lastfm will have them for a while after they're gone from my site.
