I need a hymnal that has guitar chords. Any good suggestions? something that has an alphabetical index of songs maybe with first lines-you know, kinda like Rise up Singing.

Thanks a bunch!

Some hymns are given guitar chords in The Church of Scotland's Church Hymnary, 4th Ed. Full Music (2005). Avoid "Melody" or "Large Print" editions.

Find an organist who can be bribed with cookies to make you a few arrangements that show all the changes that the bass line would imply and stand by to practice a lot. for instance

C G C   G   C F   C    G   C    F    G    C
wel come hap py morn ing age to age shall say

is a pretty good example from the easter section of the Episcopal hymnal. The hymn melodies are usually moderately simple, but the harmonies are often majestic. That kind of chord line can often be accomplished with just a change of bass note or 2 note chord sequences -not as daunting as it might look.

It depends what kind of music you are looking for. "Songs of Fellowship" (published by Kingsway Music) has guitar chords, and has a mixture of traditional hymns and more modern songs.

There's also: "Worship Songs & Choruses - Easy to play arrangements for keyboard and guitar" published by Kevin Mayhew Ltd., who also publish lots of other church music. info@kevinmayhew.com
This book has many of the modern "standards" such as "I lift my hands", "There is a Redeemer", "Knowing You" (i.e. Graham Kendrick,Stuart Townend, Noel Richards, Matt Redman songs).

Every year, after Spring Harvest, booklets are published with the new songs, so it's worth looking in your nearest Christian Bookshop. Those books always have the guitar chords.

For beautiful songs with a more folk/traditional feel, there's Eden's Bridge (www.edensbridge.co.uk) who have also published at least one songbook.

All the best,
