I thought it couldn't get any worse. I've always said that Bush has no pride but this takes the cake. I guess its one way for Bush to avoid any accountability...

From the Seattle PI:

"Top Bush adviser to name war coordinator
By DEB RIECHMANN
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- President Bush's top national security adviser said Thursday that there is an urgent need to name a high-powered White House official to oversee the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"It's something I would like to have done yesterday and if yesterday wasn't available, the day before," National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley told reporters during a briefing at the White House. A day earlier, the White House had said the idea for a so-called war czar was still in its infancy."

Possibly the thing most impressive about GW's decision that he should pass some authority to someone who actually knows how to run a war, is that reports indicate that his first three choices for the job declined - QUIETLY, FIRMLY, AND UNEQUIVOCALLY!

Yes, John...and all three were retired generals or admirals, one each from the Army, Navy and Marines. Wonder if they have inside information about the prospects for success?

Where the executive branch overlaps the DOD and Intelligence agencies we NEED a department of the WAR CZAR.

What they will be in charge of is blame. The office will be formed with retroactive respondsibilities so the blame wil be accesses as far back as 2002.

It is true 75% of the generals have been asked to fill this position but they have all declined. We do have one person who is now available and that is Don Imus.

Actually, it shouldn't be that hard to find someone to fill the job. I personally know several people named Romanoff.

That's why they say the program is in its infancy. IOW they can't find anyone who wants the job. One general already said that Cheney still has too much control and will undermine any efforts to change policy.

What will the Secretaries of Defence do? Oh, the last ne asked to be fired & the present one is on continuious overseas vacation drumming up new battles.
And when we have no wars, will they be charged with starting new ones at a cost of their job?

Another thing, with a CZAR you are not bound by the constitution.
A Czar has dicatatorial authority and can hand down death sentences as it sees fit. Its better than a miltary tribunal and the civilian CIA which is now run by a military General.

IT doesn't matter if all the fascist dictates of Bushism are implemented now or not.
What they count on is that some ground work is laid, as with his father and his Gulf War as well as his One World Government.

Damn they almost got Harriet Myers as a Supreme court justice, oh well maybe next time.

Czarina is the appropriate term. Therre actually is precedent for someone overseeing the war.During the Civil War congress created a committee to oversee the conduct of the war made up of mostly radical Republicans of the Thaddeus Stephens ilk. STill if Bush(Cheney) doesn't like the way things are going or the "Czar" gives them ideas they(Cheney) don't like, that idea will go down thetoilet as well. Neil

I'm not sure that it would be constitutional, since the Constitution specifically names the President as Commander-In-Chief.

But that's never bothered many of the fools on the hill before....

I heard THIS STORY on my local NPR affiliate a couple of weeks ago and I thought, "Fantastic! Bloody well about time!" But I knew that many people, including Dennis Kucinich (candidate for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004, and again for 2008) have been advocating this for years. It was nice to hear that others were actually picking up on an idea that is so patently intelligent and reasonable that it should be obvious to all. Department of War? Why not have a Department of Peace, dedicated to trying to solve conflicts through diplomacy and negotiation rather than the knee-jerk reaction of "calling out the Marines?"

But as the story progressed, I was stunned and sickened by the reaction of some of the people in the town. It seems that if you would prefer to work things out peaceably rather than immediately reaching for your gun, that makes you a "communist" or a "wuss!"

Sometimes I despair of my species!

A Department dedicated to trying to solve conflicts through diplomacy and negotiation. Actually, we have one of those; it's called the State Department. However, it is headed by Presidential appointees and follows the directions of whoever is in the White House at any particular time. If we had a separate Department of Peace, it would still be headed by a Presidential appointee...and so forth.

The problem with names like those for government departments is they tend to go into dramatic inversions of their names. The DoD became a Department of Imperial Aggression; the Department of the Interior became a Department of Commercial Management of Raw Resources; the Department of the Treasury became the Department of Unconscionable Debt, and so on. A department NAMED the Department of Peace, given the nature of large government powers, would quickly circle on itself and find itself all inadvertently starting a war. At least when the DoD was more honestly called the War Department, it fulfilled its title.

I think we should have a Department of Beauty, too. They could plan housing developments and leveling mountains to build shopping malls.

When asked what Riza does at the foundation, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey on Friday said his "best understanding" was that she is an adviser to the foundation's board. "I do not have a job description for her, no," he said.

Bush can give the job to Shaha Riza. Like bobert said, she needs a job. I'd like to see her and Liz Cheney fight over it. It could be decided by a public 'cat' fight. Ann Coulter could be the referee. Now thats something I'd pay money to see.

How about Osama (Bin Laden, not that other guy)? He's probably about due for a career change. I think that messy little business of his involvement in the WTC attack has pretty much been forgotten, hasn't it? If not, we'll have him make an apology, do the talk-show circuit, then the appointment ...
