BS: How are we to celebrate St George's day

April 23rd is St George's day and patriotic Englishman around the world are to celebrate their national day. But how do we celebrate? What do we do? The Irish have their parades and get drunk and the scots pipe in the haggis and get drunk. What, however, do the English do? Should we have a roast beef meal with plenty of ale while playing our Steeleye Span CDs in the background? St George's Day use to be a big festival in England until the 18th Century, evidently. I wonder how they celebrated? Anyone with any ideas?

It should be a Bank Holiday, so we can get drunk.

I think a Mummers' Play would be appropriate.

This isn't as true now as it once was, but a comedian once pointed out that on the 4th of July, Americans like to gather together for a grand communal celebration - while on July 1st (Canada Day), Canadians like to get as far away from each other as they can. Perhaps the English are more like the Canadians when it comes to their national day ...

The very best way for any Englishman to celebrate St.George"s Day is to join the Campaign For An English Parliament. It is very easy---just look it up on the internet !! I was AMAZED to discover, within the last two days, that ,OFFICIALLY , England does NOT EXIST in Europe !! Scotland, YES !! Because they have a parliament, and therefore a representative at the European Parliament in Brussels .Wales, YES!! Because they have a National Assembly, and ,therefore a representative at the European Parliament in Brussels . But ENGLAND is NOT, yes! NOT represented at the European Parliament in Brussels , because there is NO ENGLISH PARLIAMENT !!! We are the ONLY country in the EU that is not officially recognised as a country !! So Brussels "recognises " Scotland, and Wales, and the United Kingdom, of course, ---But not England !! That"s why, on a census form ,or any other form come to that, you can"t tick a box to say that your"e English. Sad, isn"t it ?? Mind you, you could always go down the pub and watch football ,I suppose-----Have a few Britneys, then go home for a Melvyn, if you get my meaning ?? Patriotism"s too much hassle, innit ??

In view of the country's recent achievements, a dignified silence would probably do the least harm to its image.

The Campaign For An English Parliament ( http://www.thecep.org.uk ) is an excellent organisation that help demonstrate how unfairly the english are treated in the union. And whilst we are on the subject of lack of english representation in europe, how about the lack of english invlovement in the british-irish council. Go to the following link and spot the missing nation.

http://www3.british-irishcouncil.org/member/membermain.asp

I'll give you a clue it begins with "e" and it is not "estonia". If i remember correctly there was a delibrate attempt to make no mention of england in the council's constitution, unlike the other coountries. But then my memory isn't was it was. i think... or was it? Can't remember really...

Make an apple dragon! Fashion a dragon from pastry, fill his belly with apples and nuts, bake to a golden toasty. "Slay" him with a big knife to the tummy, and serve with vanilla ice cream. That's what we do at our house.

George the cat's birthday and Bessie the terriers birthday both on St Georges day. Also bessie is due for pups on that day so one way or another, celebrations are in order.

Why is the Briish/Irish union called the Anglo/Irish union? A parliament for England is definitely on the cards soon.

I shall celebrate by going down with the Boat Band to the deep south and have an all-England tune session in the Prince Albert in Stroud with assorted Stradling type southern musicians. All musicians welcome. Monday April 23(We're also playing a gig in the Prince Albert on Sat 21, so don't be confused by the two dates. Gig or session, take your choice).

Stroud's not the deep south - Dorset is.
