BS: Tie a yellow ribbon round the US flag

All the die hard Bush supporters on our street have US flags by their front door. Mine is mounted on the only vertical pole above a stockade fence but it is still indstinguishable from the other "Republican" flags.

During these days of surge vs no funding for Bush wars I believe a simple yellow ribbon says "bring our flag home".
If you put it on the flag some dolt would cry "desecration".
SO PUT IT ON THE FLAG POLE

I'm gonna do it. This could catch on.

tie a yellow ribbon round the US flag
its been 5 long years
since the wars gone bad
if there's not a yellow ribbon round the US flag
we support George Bush
forget the whole past
put the blame on fags
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the US flag

....

orig.

Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do you still want me?
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak
Bus driver, please look for me
'Cause I couldn't bear to see what I might see
I'm really still in prison, and my love she holds the key
A simple yellow ribbon's what I need to set me free
I wrote and told her please:

REPEAT CHORUS

Now the whole damn bus is cheering
And I can't believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons 'round the old oak tree
I'm comin' home

Donuel, military unit flags have "always" had long battle streamers made of ribbon and some are yellow. Attach your ribbon to the top of the flag at the staff and, if anyone asks, say it represents a battle streamer for all of the troops.

Sounds copesetic all the way around.
Personally I like the irony that the song was treated as a patriotic tune during the first Bush Iraq war.

GOOD idea! I'm going to put one on the top of my World Peace flag out front. (It's the Blue Planet in Space flag)

Donuel's song reminds me of
this video somehow.

Thanks I never saw them before.
Asylum Street Spankers are more brazen than the Capitol steps.

Its up and looks good. I'm such a procrastinator, I bought the ribbon 2 weeks ago for this very purpose.

Asylum Street Spankers....I'm a fan.

Utah Phillips has written a good song about it too.

Mark Erelli, whose songs I really like, wrote this one.

Seeds of Peace
© 2006 Mark Erelli

from the album A Nod To Bob
(I have it on Hope and Other Casualties)
The American flag is tied to a fence on an overpass
With a homemade sign written in red, white and blue
It reads "Welcome Home Jason Miller, Private First Class"
And I don't even know him but I'm grateful for any good news

What's become of my country torn by contradiction
The spirit of freedom propped up by a culture of fear
Where it's unpatriotic to protest or even to question
Have we learned nothing from history or the last couple years

(Chorus)
And the rain pours down
On the fallow ground
And the fruited plain as barren as the sand
Is it not within our will
How long must we wait until
The seeds of peace find purchase in this land

He stood on the deck and he said we'd accomplished our mission
He twisted the facts 'til he knew it would pass for the truth
Vengeance can fill any fool with conviction
But he can't wash the blood of the fallen from his cowboy boots

(Chorus)

I will not be shamed into silence by partisan thunder
I won't fall in line and march to the drums on the wind
How many more daughters and sons will we see plowed under
How much longer must we wait 'til the harvest comes in

When the sun shines down
On this hallowed ground
And the fruited plain so bountiful and grand
Is it not within our will
How long must we wait until
The seeds of peace find purchase in this land

Will the seeds of peace find purchase in this land?
I don't find his songs to be completely without awkwardness, but he's one of the best writers of protest songs going today. I find he can be quite inspirational, which is more than I can say for the majority.

I might just put a yellow ribbon on an empty flagpole too. Says it all, doncha think?

Jeri, thanks for the link. His voice reminds me of Dave Carter's...very beautiful.

Sorcha, remember that the flag belongs to all of us - it is not the property of the "right" generally or the Republicans in specific. Do not allow them to seize it as their symbol or to pervert its meaning as they have done with the word "liberal".

If you're gonna tie a yellow ribbon to the flag then fly the flag upside down. The international distress signal is flying your flag in that manner & it surely is in a state of distress.

Fearing that the flag would be flown upside down at a military prison, my cousin murdered Robert Redford in the movie Castle Keep. Some whackos are sensitive to such things.

Tieing a yellow ribbon around the the middle of the flag has more visual impact and prevents the flag from flying free in a poetic way but putting ribbon on the pole seems enough to me.

I think I'll alert some friends in NY to this idea via email.
