BS: Mudcat baby born! Kiran Schatz

02 May 07 - 02:19 AM (#2040950)
Subject: BS: Mudcat baby born! Kiran Schatz
From: Dan Schatz

Dear Friends,

Our baby boy, Kiran Shivde Schatz, came into the world on May 1, 2007 at 5:56 pm, weighing in at 6 pounds, 12 ounces and 19 inches long. It ended up being a C-section delivery, which was not what we had expected but which went very smoothly. Mother and baby are both doing well. Kiran (pronounced KEE-run) is a sweet, good-tempered, beautiful baby who loves being sung to.

Thanks to all of you for all your support and encouragement during this amazing time. Kiran has many baby blankets and even more good folkie wishes from his Mudcat friends.

I don't know if I'll be able to check this thread for awhile, since I'll mostly be at the hospital, but I wanted to give you all the news.

Warmly,
Dan Schatz

Wonderful to hear some good news. Congratulations, we hope all continues to go well. Having had C section, I can reinforce the advice to not lift anything heavier than baby for 6 weeks!! Mind you... my baby was a whole bag of sugar heavier than yours!

You've GOT to post pictures!

Thanks for all the good wishes - I'll print these out and give them to Geeta. It may be awhile before I can figure out how to get pictures posted, but we'll get them up eventually. A few people who may have more time for such things than I already have some, so perhaps they can post them on Flicker or what-not.

Mother and baby are still doing well. He's a joy to be with.

I have seen a couple of pictures (Dan emailed them to me), but I'm such a techno-klutz I'm not even going to attempt to post them. But take my word for it -- he's gorgeous! I'm sure we'll have pix on line before long.

Becca, if you think YOU feel old --- I applied for Medicare and became a grandmother on the same day!

Thanks for all the good wishes, folks!

Here's some information about the meaning of the name Kiran:

"The boy's name Kiran \k(i)-ran\ is pronounced keer-an. It is of Hindi and Sanskrit origin, and its meaning is "beam of light"."

What a wonderful meaning!

Congratulations to you, your wife, and your family.

And may your child wear his name proudly!

No problem- a Banjo-uke makes a good baby tenor...

And a dulcimer is no problem, either... And a viola would make a good baby bass, with a little work.

Well, Kiran met his Grandma Nancy this weekend and they got along famously! (Well, it's famous now since I've posted it to the internet.) He is an absolute joy to be with - still. And eventually the pictures will come - we have a beautiful one of Kiran with his Grandma!

It will take a little while, though - we are still running around figuring out what we need more of, learning how to do things for the first time that eventually will take no time at all, and spending time with the family and friends who have dropped in to visit!

Thanks for all the good wishes.

MY son was born in May and attended his first Getaway when he was 6 months old....

It just takes planning & determination...*grin*....and one thing about babies that age, you have a LOT of volunteers to relieve you of holding them constantly. (Now, at 2½, the story is different)

Now just a darn minute here, all those diapers had better have not been changed!!!! I demand my rights as a surrogate (although MIA, of late) Unk, and expect that a least a few diapers will be left for me to change.

I am sorry that I haven't gotten to this one. I resolved the fight that I had to fight (principles intact), and as a result of the good fight, I got promoted. The bad news is that I am on an airplane on Monday, and not back until Friday. Spending my time organizing slaughterhouse workers in South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

These are two of my favorite people in the world, and I just couldn't be happier!! I was at a music gathering last weekend, and the list indicated that Dan would be there, so I thought he would bring Geeta and the new wee one. But only Uncle Ken was there. Not even Grandma Nancy.

Bless this baby and bless these wonderful parents. Kiran, one day you will realize what a gift that God bestowed on you by bringing you into this family. You will know love, you will know the joy of education, you will know cultures, and you will have the gift of music, young lad. And with all this, you will make a difference in this world. And the world will be better for it.

Love to all, and I will be by to change the diaper,

Uncle Mick

The pictures are here! Some of them anyway. Geeta (mother of one and resident quasi-technical person) has figured out how to post photos to Flickr and has posted a few under the name kssbaby in the Mudcat group. Lots of pics of Kiran and Grandma Nancy, and one in a Nanny Jaqcui blanket too!

There will be more pics, including one that brings to mind some of the excesses of last year's Saturday night Getaway concert, posted soon to a new website that we're creating in anticipation of my upcoming new CD. But that's not ready yet, so we figured we should bow to popular demand and put a few pics up anyway.

I think that THIS ought to get you there.

The last couple of days Kiran and I have enjoyed some dancing in the morning - he loves music and seems to particularly enjoy being swung round to John McCutcheon's Fine Times At Our House record.

We sure would like to get to the Getaway - I've already reserved that weekend from work - but with a 6 month old we may find it easier to stay nearby rather than on site. Depending on his temperament at that time, an infant could easily keep a whole cabin awake.

But the idea of a "Lullabies and Baby Bouncing Songs" workshop has certainly come to my mind. I've learned that anything can be a lullaby or baby rocking song, depending on how you sing it. He loves the spiritual "Oh Freedom...."

Of course, you have to be careful what you play. The other day I put him down in his bassinet for a few minutes and put on a favorite old time fiddle record. From the other room, I thought I heard him crying - but came back and realized it was the fiddle! (As Bruce Hutton and the guys in Roustabout used to say, it's better than it sounds....)

Thanks for pointing out the CD release, Sharon. I just posted a thread about it, but I can't seem to make threads link consistently, so I'll let it stand on its own. This is a fine looking young man. Keep him away from banjoes. And don't poddy train him until I get to change a diaper. Don't worry, it will happen before he hits middle school.

Love to all in the Schatz family,

Mick

Gee, thanks Mick.

Seriously, thanks to everyone. He's still an absolutely great, sweet tempered (most of the time) kid. His favorite music is still the blues (especially Piedmont Blues - he LOVES his Cephas and Wiggins), but he's branched out a bit into Cajun. And, as his mother found out shopping the other day, Jimmy Buffett. Come to think of it, he loves the oldtime stuff too, especially the more bouncy tunes on Jean Ritchie's albums. He's got taste.

Kiran is having a quiet birthday, pretty much, with a big party on Sunday.

Incidentally, his grandma Nancy had a birthday two days ago - HAPPY BIRTHDAY MA!

Five years old today, and he's still a delight. He sings all the time, and every time we're making cookies and spill a little, he starts dancing around and we sing Jean Ritchie's "Sugar On the Floor."

The three of us, and Grandma, will be at Old Songs this year; maybe we'll see some of you.

Happy Birthday, Kiran. You really made my winter happier when your dad quoted something you said. I'm glad I got to meet you- and your mom and dad, too.

I talked to him on the phone this evening, and he said the best part of his birthday was when he was at school and his classmates said his Mommy was the BEST Mommy of all! (Presumably because she baked special cupcakes for everyone) He was VERY excited (wonder if he'll get to sleep tonight...), and looking forward to his birthday party next Sunday -- which I plan to attend, of course. What a great kid!

Considering his gifts included a bicycle, a microscope, and 7 (count 'em) gallons of Legos, that's pretty high praise for Mommy!

Happy Birthday Kiren:

What out for those legos, Will played with them for hours, created worlds that took up the whole living room. He is off to engineering school at RPI next year.

Happy birthday, Kiran.   It's a day late, so tell your daddy and mommy they have to give you another cupcake and sing you more songs.

Tinker, the Legos were lovingly collected by me over the first 12 years of my life. Any found on the floor the hard way will be considered "Grandparents' revenge."

Barbara, of course we'll stop by the Folk Legacy booth! Last time we came to find an album I'd produced prominently featured in the Folk Legacy ad - my pride was a little too much to contain!
