Took an Autoharp Class at Augusta and one song we learned was "Goodlby Liza Jane". However, only learned one verse. There must be others.

Thanks!

GOODBYE MISS LIZA JANE

1: Look here Liza listen to me
Say you're not the girl you promised to be
Didn't you say you'd always be true
You went out a runnin with Mr Brown
I am the laughing stock of the town
People say to never trust you.

Chorus: Throw up your hands ma'am I'm a gonna go
I was a good man while I had to go, So
Goodbye Miss Liza I'm gonna leave you
You'll know when I go I was the feller with the do do do.
Sing a little song travel along
Leave me good day maam I'm on my way
Goodbye miss Liza Jane.

2: Give me here my gold watch and chain
Give me my umbrella case it might rain
Give me the clothes that I paid for too
Check me in the trunk and hand me those things
Give me back my gold diamond ring
You can get Mr Brown to dress you all up new.

---
ver1:

Look a' here, Liza, listen to me;
You ain't the gal you promised to be;
Didn't you say you always would be true, oo, oo, oo, oo?
You went a driving with Mister Brown;
Now I'm the laughing stock of the town;
Folks say that I was crazy to trust you, oo, oo, oo, oo.
Throw up my hands babe, I'se gwine to go;
Can't stand the blow; I loved you so;
I was the good thing while I had the "dough"
Now I must whisper low:

Chorus: "Good bye, Eliza Jane, I'm gwine a' for to leave you!
Well, you'll know when I go,
that I was the fellow with the "dough, dough, dough;"
so I'm gwine for to sing a little song,
And travel a long, just travel a long
Wish you good day, Babe, I'm on my way, Good bye Eliza Jane."

Look a' here, Liza, take off those rings;
Dig in that trunk, gal; hand me those things;
I'm gwine to take the clothes I paid for, too, oo, oo, oo, oo!
Cough up that old gold watch, and de chain;
Wants that umbrella, cause it might rain;
Ask Mister Brown to fix you up all new, oo, oo, oo, oo.
Rent time is here, babe; landlord today;
I'll be away; who's gwine to pay?
P'r'aps Mister Brown will if he's a jay,
Once more to you I say:

---
ver2:

Looka here Liza, listen to me,
You're not the gal that you promised to be,
Didn't you say you'd always be true?
You went out driving (with) Mr. Brown,
I am the laughing stock of the town.
People said to never trust you.

Chorus: Throw up my hands babe, I'm a gonna go,
I was a good man while I had the dough,
So it's good bye, Miss Liza, I'm going to leave you.
You know when I go, I'm the fellow with the dough, dough, dough.
So sing a little song, travel along, yes, travel along,
Bid you good day, babe, I'm on the way.
Goodbye, sweet Liza Jane.

Give me here my gold watch and chain,
Give me your umbrella, said it might rain,
Give me the clothes that I paid for too.
Dig in the trunk, and hand me them things.
Give me here my diamond ring
And ask Mr. Brown the dress you up all new.

Chorus, then repeat last five lines of chorus

Hi Ben,

Since there are several different songs with about the same title, it might be helpful if you posted the lyrics you already know. That way, the rest of us will have something to go on.

Best regards,
Ray

Well, Ben,

One I learned many, many years ago in England (from Derek Brimstone, as I recall, with pen and notebook in my hand), went:

Scarlet town is burning down,
Goodbye, goodbye
Scarlet town is burning down,
Goodbye, Liza Jane.

Ch: Ain't you feeling sorry,
Goodbye, goodbye
Ain't you feeling sorry,
Goodbye, Liza Jane.

Liza Jane is dead and gone, goodbye..
But in my heart she still lives on...

I added a verse for the middle, but it ain't the way I first heard it, and since it may not be the song you want I'll not add it here. That's the way I learned it.

I want to thank you who responded to my post. It was suggested that I include the verse I learned so you all could respond in kind. It is:

Charlotte Town is burning down.
Good - bye, good - bye
Charlotte Town is burning down
Good - bye Liza Jane

Chorus:
Oh, how I loved her
Ain't that a shame
Oh how I loved her
Good - bye Liza Jane

I remember hearing the version posted by Anglo, though I remember one of the lines from the chorus being "ain't you kinda sorry". I also, at some point, heard a very different version with a chorus that went

Oh! E-liz-a
little Liza Jane
Oh! E-liz-a
little Liza Jane

See lyrics to "Charleston Town Is Burning Down," posted in thread 2777, Lyr. Req: Goodbye Liza Jane, linked above. Gene posted full lyrics 08 Jun 98.

The lyrics, with discussion, also here at the Bluegrass messengers site:
Charleston Town
The Bluegrass Messengers mention that the song may have been suggested by Sumter during the siege, but although the lyrics refer to the Civil War, the particular lyrics sung by the New Christy Minstrels seem to be much later than the event.
Charlottetown is applied to the same song.

Where Scarlet Town came in, I don't know.

I always sang the 'Scarlet town is burning down' version for kids with a series of verses based on color. I would ask for the name of a color and make up a verse about it. It was a great hit with school kids who would always try to stump me.

GOODBYE LIZA JANE

Liza Jane in a dress of red,
Good bye, good bye,
hem stitched 'round with golden thread,
Good bye Liza Jane

Liza Jane in a dress of green,
Prettiest girl I've ever seen.

Liza Jane in a dress of blue,
Stole my heart and my best friend, too.

Liza jane in a dress of brown,
Prettiest girl in the whole darned town.

Liza Jane in a dress of purple,
Lips as sweet as maple surple.

For 'orange' I sang,
Orange Liza Jane won't wear,
Now I've made a rhyme, so there!

You get the idea. It's a great kids song.

A choral version was prepared by Aden G. Lewis, Plymouth Choral Library, Plymouth Music. It combines two songs. About $1.60.
Treble chorus, class 1a. Saied Music Co., Tulsa, is one source, Colla Voce Music is another, both on the net.

Btw, DADGBE

That is a great way to sing Liza Jane and have children sing it too!!!

But what do you do if you're encouraging children to come up with a rhyme and for the color "red", they say "pee the bed" or for the color "pink" they say "Gee, you stink"??

:o)

GOODBYE LIZA JANE

Our horse fell down the well around behind the stable
Our horse fell down the well around behind the stable
Well he didn't fall clear down but he fell
Fell fell fell fell fell
As far as he was able
So it's goodbye Liza Jane

Our goose swallowed a snail and his eyes bugged out with wonder
Our goose swallowed a snail and his eyes bugged out with wonder
And a horn grew through his tail
Tail tail tail tail tail
And bust it all asunder
So it's goodbye Liza Jane

My gal crossed the bridge so she wouldn't get her feet wet
My gal crossed the bridge so she wouldn't get her feet wet
Well she didn't cross the bridge but she would
Would would would would would
But the bridge it wasn't built yet
So it's goodbye Liza Jane

Nobody's posting on here anymore, but I feel like posting the version we're singing in choir xD

GOODBYE LIZA JANE

Hey, ho the boatmen row!
Floating down the river on the Ohio
Hey, ho the boatmen row!
Floating down the river on the Ohio

Charlotte Town's burning down
Good-bye, good-bye
Burning down to the ground
Good-bye Liza Jane

Ain'tcha mighty sorry?
Good-bye, good-bye
Ain'tcha mighty sorry?
Good-bye Liza Jane

Black my boots and-a make them shine
Good-bye, good-bye
Black my boots and-a make them shine
Good-bye Liza Jane

Ain'tcha mighty sorry?
Good-bye, good-bye
Ain'tcha mighty sorry?
Good-bye Liza Jane

There's a gal in Baltimore
Good-bye, good-bye
Silver doorplate on her door
Lil Liza Jane

((now, here's where it gets a little weird with the sopranos and altos singing different parts)

Ain'tcha mighty sorry? (Oh, Eliza)
Good-bye, good bye (That lil Liza Jane)
Ain'tcha mighty sorry? (Oh, Eliza)
Good-bye Liza Jane

And then it repeats the first verse and the chorus and ta-da it's done.
