Their website says "The Time Bandits is a Chester-based band, which performs Anglo-European folk and early renaissance dance music." They are usually on at Chester festival, and in 2005 they won the open mike at a Bridgenorth(?) so got a booking last year at Shrewsbury. |

Spare Parts are doing English tunes practice sessions on Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m - noon and on Monday morning at the same time, venue to be announced. We're also running our usual concertina part-playing sessions on Saturday morning (10.30 a.m - noon ) Saturday afternoon (2.30 - 4.00 ) and Monday afternoon (2.30 - 4.00 )and performing in a couple of places as well. I think thanks are due to Bob and Gill Berry for taking note of requests made through Mudcat last year that the organised song sessions don't clash. Therefore, we don't have to make the choice this year about whether to support Herga Kitty or Mr & Mrs. Admiral, but can enjoy both. |

This springs from developments at our own session at Bradford on Avon, where some of the less experienced members started meeting an hour earlier to practice playing tunes more slowly, but they did so following more-or-less normal session ettiquette. So I want to run a slow session with a few ground rules, along the lines of 1) G and D (and relative minors) only 2) well known English tunes 3) played not too fast. The idea is to allow people the room to practice jumping in with a tune (no easy thing to do if you haven't done it before) in an atmosphere less 'threatening' than the wondrous session in the Rose and Crown barn. I think George Garside has done something similar at a couple of festivals. If it comes off then with the Spare Parts teaching sessions, my sessions and the main sessions in the Rose and Crown barn we should have a short but complete course in playing in English sessions. The camping and hall spaces is not as limited as many years ago so the cut of point for sales is pretty high. Some of the events may have to have house full signs so, as ever, the motto is "don't be late". For those who camp and have a delicate sense of smell the good news is that the meat factory by the campsite has closed. The bad news for Chippenham is that the 300 jobs it provided have moved to Scotland. Julian |

Then it's just a case of decoding the titles they give the workshops, and reading the bit about the caller, in case they drop some hints. What they usually are (unless they say Cotswold or NW when they're probably Morris) is lots of expert dancers doing dances they might not do in their clubs, without a lot of laboured explanation. The ones marked 'American' will be squares and contras. The others probably Playford type. |

If you are attending the ceilidhs I have put all that Pete Rees told me on cresby.com - dance dates which is pretty much all of them. call me a pedant but a paying punter for one night will want to know who to expect to choose the night, at those prices!. And if I am paying for her ticket - I don't expect to waste it on a band who don't play "waltzes" for a waltze, however few there are. So Peeping Tom & Sat are our choice, Sunday night is not. The "at a Glance" on the website tells you what is happening but not the WHO thereof. not for ceilidhs - to make you buy the programme. apart from the calling workshops which appear to be ceilidh oriented rather than square/contra/social folk - But Sheila Mainwaring calls them all and it will depend on who attends. |

The Black Horse is on the same side of the Main Drag, up the hill from the Bridge and where Jay (the Landlord) is waiting make us welcome. I understand that the English Music Session will be moving there as well. We haven't received our contracts yet which is late even for Chippers but we think that we are fronting the Sings, Fri and Sat Folk Clubs and participating in 'It's Got To Have A Chorus' on Sun night.
